Everybody loves a media circus and the trial of Rafael Giovanni is no exception. If he was famous before, in the days following the shooting, now he's all people are talking about, and all the tabloids want to focus on. The complications presented at some of the early hearings by Jaka, regarding the identity of the Black Scourge and Rafael's alleged reaction have only made the story more appealing to the millions watching.

They've also caused the trial to drag out for months as facts are checked, evidence is poured over, and the jury becomes only more split on the issue. In the meantime, the holidays fly by, and one of the most terrible winters in years blankets Chicago in blizzards.

This log covers any work and non-work related shenanigans the Knights have while staying in Chicago, immediately following the last log and continuing for the next couple months. This will be the Knight's last time in Chicago before the trial: after which they plan to return to the castle to fully Knight Violet and Elena and decide where to head next.

[ she gives her a small smile before scooting her chair back to stand up ] Like I said, anytime.

[She hesitates for a moment before standing also.]

Maybe... anytime could be now? We could... go get lunch somewhere? Get out of here for awhile?

[She could use some fresh air and maybe a fresh perspective.]

[ she looks a little surprised, in a good way, but hides it quickly regardless ] Oh yes, of course. Now sounds perfect. I'll go get my jacket.

[witchwoman]

[Her smile grows slightly, flickering with a genuine warmth. She nods again and busies herself in the meantime, cleaning up the coffee mugs while she waits.]

[ it only takes her a few minutes to return, and she speaks as she enters, announcing her presence ] So, what's good around here?

[witchwoman]

[Myri turns and dries her hands, moving towards the door of the suite so that they can head on out.]

There's a little bit of everything. Chinese? [She may have a special place in her heart for all Chinese restaurants because of Spike taking her to one early on during the mission.]

[socialgraces]

Sounds great. [ francesca practically lives on take-out nowadays, so chinese is right up her alley ] Lead the way.

[witchwoman]

[AND LEAD THE WAY SHE DOES. Down the hall, to the elevator, and through the lobby until they are out on the Chicago streets where everything is deceptively sunny (even if it is still chilly).]

Do you miss it? Back at the castle? [Not at all because she has been thinking about going back. Nope. This is fine conversation while they walk to lunch, right?]

[ she dons a pair of sunglasses before they walk outside ] Quite a bit, actually. I don't think anyone's immune to homesickness, no matter how long they've been at this. I suppose I miss people more than the place, though.

[witchwoman]

How long have you been with the Knights? [She's realizing just how little she knows about the woman. After a few short years, she's come to think of the other Knights as her family. Francesca was far more seasoned, though. She must miss people terribly.]

One hundred and ten years in June.

[witchwoman]

[Well...that was not the answer she was expecting.]

...You're- Oh.

[socialgraces]

[ she smirks lightly at myri's response ] Elves live quite a bit longer than humans.

[witchwoman]

[She looks a bit embarrassed.] Of course. I think I knew that, but I didn't... really know it.

[socialgraces]

Well, there aren't a lot of elves running around the Knights, and I wouldn't expect you to remember everything. [ she's teasing, and she looks down at the sidewalk as they continue ] I'm going to be two hundred this year, well, not until July, but I suppose that's quite a milestone.

[witchwoman]

You don't look a day over 150. [Oh my god she told a joke.]

[socialgraces]

[ francesca's smile grows wider, and she's obviously amused ] I'm going to take that as a compliment.

[witchwoman]

You should. You're very beautiful. [So sincere, Myri can recognize and appreciate beauty.] But how long can elves live?

[socialgraces]

Upwards to seven hundred years, although dark elves usually have a less optimistic live expectancy.

[witchwoman]

Why's that? [s-so clueless]

Their society is rooted in chaos and deception; death is perhaps a merciful escape. Although whatever the after-life holds for them - for us - it probably doesn't include lessons in benevolence. [ s-so uplifting :| ]

[witchwoman]

Are the gods all so... [She trails off, not sure how to say this delicately. The only exposure she's had with this is what she's encountered on the mission. Which is all terrifying.]

[socialgraces]

Oh no, there's those that legitimately care for their people, and those that spread hope and preach love. Did you know, there's not even a word in the Drow vocabulary for love?

[witchwoman]

That sounds... terrible. [Probably not the most politically correct answer but it just comes out before she can stop it.] Oh- I'm sorry... I didn't mean..

Oh, no, you're quite right - it is terrible. That emotion's quickly beaten out of children, and any signs of it are an easily exploited weakness, or so they believe.

It's one of the reasons I knew Jaka Teken'duis couldn't be trusted - he hasn't an ounce of compassion left in him. Or if, by some fluke he does, he won't show it. Especially not so publicly. [ /end rant ]
