The Knights arrive at the scene of the fire several hours after the fact.  It's clearly gutted the building, located in a commercial district of Rome.  Only one fire truck remains, along with several police cruisers and a van marked 'Arson Investigation Unit' in Italian.  The police team seems hard at work combing over the scene.

A small sign in Italian hangs half-legible over the door.  Though the fire is out, the building still smolders, even as water drips from the blackened timbers and stone.

[Yeah, Kate definitely hears that (listen 22), and her hand goes to her hip, almost as though she's reaching for her gun, but that's not where she has it holstered at the moment. She lets it fall, before glancing back to Alanna.]

You hear that?

[ with her listen check of 20 total, alanna definitely did. and she's regretting having left her sword in the car now. she doesn't wait for permission, but rushes past the employees towards the 'employees only' door so they can get to bo (dex 17 to dodge around employees). ]

[Kate is right behind her, albeit not as smoothly (dexterity 8). She gets caught up behind a few people, but eventually she clears the crowd and is right on Alanna's six.]

[ tall dark and skinny 'customer' over there, however, sticks a foot out casually to trip alanna as she hurries past him. with combat martial arts, he does not provoke an attack of opp. so his attack is a 23 vs her touch AC. he also got a nat 20 strength check, which will be opposed by a dex check from her (total str 22). so unless she probably gets a nat 20 dex check, alanna's about to eat some floor... ]

[ yeah, no. she tripped and is craaaaashing to the floor (dex crit fail) with a shout. ]

[Kate watches her partner drop from view and as she finally catches up, one hand going to Alanna's arm, the other to the weapon at the small of her back. Her eyes stay on the man in the suit.]

You okay?

[ his own hand throws back his coat enough to reveal the handgun he's already aiming right at kate. he grins at her around the toothpick in his mouth. ] Why don't you take it elsewhere for now, girls?

[ yeah, alanna's having none of that. didn't anyone teach you about the tempers of gingers, bro? she glowers at him and as she picks herself up (after taking 3 damage from the floor), she throw a clenched fist for his face on her way up (atk 19, dmg 8 subdual). she follows it up with a jab of her elbow into his solar plexus (atk 27, dmg 9 subdual). ]

[At the sight of the weapon, she draws hers completely, taking a step to the side so that she can cover Alanna as she beats the crap out of the guy, as well as hopefully cover the gun play from the other patrons in the store (wisdom 14).

While the time on her own when she first fell through the Veil has weathered some of the cop out of her, she doesn't seem like it now, all presence and purpose as she intends to stare that smirk right off Toothpick Guy's face (intimidate nat. 20).]

You know what, I think we'll stay here. Put the gun down.

[ he crit fails when alanna hits him so damn hard, and drops the weapon, which goes skittering across the floor and hits the mop or broom or whatever i said that kid had /a+ rper he stares down at it with wide eyes, just at the tall skinny mobster staggers back under the weight of alanna's blows. he's sure not smirking anymore as he turns a frightened look on kate, eyes crossing a bit as he stares down the barrel of her gun and puts his hands up hastily, the toothpick dropping to the floor.

"Ok, ok, ok, lady!"

it's at that moment that the back door swings open and the old owner walks through... the ladies can make spot checks DC 13 to see louis standing in there with a baseball bat, DC 15 to see james dean, bo, and rose, and DC 18 to see the shattered glass on the floor. ]

[ spot check of 11 means alanna sees NONE OF THIS. she just steps over to casually pick up the gun now that everyone's terrified of kate. it fits awkwardly in here hand and it's all too clear that she hasn't really taken the time to learn how they work. ]

We'll speak with the keeper of this business now.

[Kate's spot check of 12 isn't much better, she's keeping her focus on the guy in question. She tips her head in Alanna's direction before nodding.]

[ the old man looks between them all, eyes wide at the women with guns drawn. he puts his hands up too and starts babbling in italian, terrified.

the poor stock boy awkwardly points at him to indicate that he's the owner. ]

We want no trouble. We're new to this area, and wish only to know who it is that lays claim to it. [ she glances down at the gun and raises her eyebrows. ] As you might have guessed, we've designs on changing that. [ NOT TECHNICALLY A LIE ... just a clever misdirection to make them sound like gangsters.

[Hey. Four tiny women, one of whom just intimidated the crap out of the guy sitting at the table. Kate glances over before tipping the gun in her hand, raising it as though to show she's going to play nice before letting it drop to the side.]

We're just here to talk. We don't want to have to do it the hard way.

[ yeah, he totally seems to buy that they're just more mafiosos (mafiosas...?) and stammers in heavily accented english: ] Sign... Signore DiRisio. Benicio DiRisio. A very powerful family.

And where should we go to find Signore DiRisio and his family? [ diplomacy 22 ] You tell us how we can get in touch with his people, we leave you in peace. A simple arrangement.

[ he points to the back door, nervously, that he just emerged from. ] His son - Antonio - he is back there now.

[She turns and gestures to the man in the suit with her gun.]

You too. Let's go.

[ kate's got the man in the suit, so alanna will head on back ... ]
