What was supposed to be a night to unwind wound up with a confrontation between Failboat and Keijen Blade that didn't exactly go the way the team was hoping for. However, in the process, they at least managed to get Isabella back and extract Dumage from her long term undercover assignment.

The remainder of the night is spent back at the hotel, recuperating, in order to catch the flight back to London the next morning. This also means saying goodbye to those who will be going back to Chicago: Isabella, Burt, and Rafael.

[Yeah, okay. Des can't leave without saying bye to his favorite co-conspirator. He already technically said bye to Burt. That conversation at Eternal Jade (NEVER CALLING IT THAT) was enough.]

He reaches out and touches her shoulder, because Des cares nothing for her personal space.] I'm not saying this because you acted like a preteen girl back there and I feel the need to treat you like one, and I'm not saying it because I think ill of the little pointy eared schmuck, but you can do better than him.

his words seem to legitimately surprise her, and for a second she looks a little bit exposed as she stares at him, rooted to the spot. it's clear that she's not really comfortable with that level of vulnerability, but the warmth in his delivery keeps her from being able to snap at him or shut down in her usual defensive state. so instead she hesitates for a half second before saying: ] It is not as if there have never been other men interested. [ she shakes her head slightly, dismissively, although her next words are quieter. ] But next to him, how could any of them be interesting to me?

That's not interesting- that's throwing yourself on your sword, because you never thought to look anywhere else. You've seen what relationships with him look like. [Jade ran- he didn't chase. Buffy pined and he refused to acknowledge her feelings, because he was afraid. Why anyone would want that is beyond him, but he's still trying to grasp why people would ever want to be with him. Rafael's always been better, but that doesn't make him good.] You have something with him no one can touch- it's not romance. It's better. You're the only family each other has. Don't ruin that- for either of your sakes.

[Strictly speaking, being sisterzoned is probably worse than being friendzoned, but deal with it.]

I would not lose what we do have for the world. Yet-- [ she looks honest to god just REALLY SAD suddenly, the anger sort of draining out of the lines of her face where it usually appears to live 24/7 ] It is not so easy, to share him. For so long, it has been he and I, and nothing has made me happier than this.

I get that. [He smirks.] It'll get easier. You're not holding it in anymore. Trust me- that's the hard part.

... I cannot imagine much that is harder. But things will never be the same between us even now.

Give him time. He came to get you, didn't he? No matter what happens or who he loves, you mean the world to him. He might screw up every relationship he touches, but he can't replace you. And it'll hurt and it'll never feel like enough, but one day, you'll wake up and find that you don't give a rat's ass if he never kisses you, so long as he's got your back.

[It's hard to tell if he's speaking from experience or if he just knows the right words to say- the conviction behind them is enough.]

And if you are wrong? [ she sounds perfectly miserable at the thought. ] If that day does not come?

Then take comfort in the fact that you won't live nearly as long as he will.

[There's some optimism for you.] It'll come. Suffering's only eternal if you let it break you- everyone gets peace eventually. Hoping you get it before your heart stops is one of the great gambles of living.

Gambles have always been more his style than mine.

Time will tell that, I suppose. But I will do what I must, as I always have.

[He pats her shoulder.] You do that. Call me if you get into any trouble- you or him.

[It would probably make her feel better than calling the entire Knight brigade and bringing Buffy-senpai into it.]

[ she nods, glancing around before adding: ] And I will not forget what you have done for me. For him.

[He's already half-walking off and when she speaks, he pivots around and takes a few steps backwards.] Good. Because it's harder than it looks.
