Unlike the grandiose nature of the squiring ceremony each Knight undergoes upon their initial entrance into the Knighthood, the graduation to Full Knight status takes place in a much more intimate affair, between the Knight, their mentor, invited friends, and the members of the sect to which they will be inducted. There's no pompous music, no stolid rank and file, no elaborate march.

Myri, Wynn, and Koraith wait up at the front of the room for Elena to approach them, but the attitude of the ceremony is much more relaxed, full of smiles and light conversation on all sides. Of course, when Wynn speaks, people still hush. It's just how he rolls.

"Sir Elena Gilbert, please kneel."

So what is it like? [He's at least genuine in his interest. He wants to understand, Mark. It doesn't guarantee he'll care, but it guarantees a lot more gained ground than a drink, which... incidentally needs a refill. Des glances around for someone with a tray or something. And it doesn't mean I can talk about it freely, just because you might relate.

Things I personally wouldn't wish on anybody are part of why I'm in this mess, so let's just lay that aside right now.

Myri's what--? [ he follows des' gaze finally, and his eyebrows shoot up ] Uh, well then. [ his surprise melts into a warm little smile ] At least somebody's found a way to be happy.

It's not as hard as most would like to think. [He finally finds himself another glass of wine, because fuck the police, he is drinking.] Mostly it's just deciding you actually wanna be happy.

I think it might have more to do with deciding to actively work towards happiness.

If you're gonna start in with that "I don't deserve happiness" schlock, I'm gonna knock you upside the head.

[ there's a long beat. ] It's a decision I want to make, believe me. But it doesn't come without a cost.

[He hands Mark the empty glass, which isn't even the empty glass he started with.] Thanks for the drink.
