Unlike the grandiose nature of the squiring ceremony each Knight undergoes upon their initial entrance into the Knighthood, the graduation to Full Knight status takes place in a much more intimate affair, between the Knight, their mentor, invited friends, and the members of the sect to which they will be inducted. There's no pompous music, no stolid rank and file, no elaborate march.

Myri, Wynn, and Koraith wait up at the front of the room for Elena to approach them, but the attitude of the ceremony is much more relaxed, full of smiles and light conversation on all sides. Of course, when Wynn speaks, people still hush. It's just how he rolls.

"Sir Elena Gilbert, please kneel."

She was in my history class. [Look he has no idea what, if anything, Elena has told these people about him or what she'd be comfortable with them knowing of their convoluted as fuck relationship, so he is just going to downplay it until he hears otherwise.]

[The sudden shift in her expression combined with the interrogation style questioning knocks some realization into him (wisdom 19). There really was no way for him to answer that without skirting the issue to maintain Elena's privacy, and perpetuating whatever this girl was already assuming about him.]

I was taking care of her and her little brother for a while after their aunt died.

[Alaric is not inclined to agree with that particular logic, but then a lot of his reservations (at least on the subject of Jenna) are more personal than simply not wanting to air Elena's business all over town.]

Her aunt was killed. By a vampire. [Well, by Klaus. Close enough. Ric don't know it tho. What he does remember is that he was helpless to do anything about it. That was thanks to a vampire, too.]

I've told her about what I can remember, but outside of her and her brother my memory isn't the greatest either.

[Alaric's starting to think he's in a no-win situation here (sense motive 24). He just kind of looks at her like rly gurl for a couple of seconds.

It's a good thing he thinks before he speaks this time too, because following up with "I remember dating her aunt and being married to her mother" probably wasn't going to help clear this up at all.]

I'm not really sure how to explain it. I have a few "glimpses" post-college, and then nothing until I met Elena and her brother. Names and faces are gone except for hers and Jeremy's.
