I take it you've never so much as seen an airplane before?

[rationalizes]

Solve every problem with an application of violence? [It's said with cheerful teasing, obviously well-intentioned given her smile] She's a mage, actually - it's just never really put a damper on her ... combative spirit.

It isn't as if I were about to bite your head off. Pardon the phrase. [She leans a bit closer, adding in a hushed tone:] If you ask me, all that self-righteous indignation over something as simple as keeping a personal secret is entirely unattractive.

[Kat turns her head enough to see Myri there and grins widely, holding it up so she can get a better view] Actually, it's gods-free, star or otherwise. I keep all my spells on here, so I can read through them between missions. Beats lugging around a trunk full of musty old books.

It's my spellbook. A lot of us mages are going wireless these days.

I never woulda guessed. [ That explains why she's Myri's knight. She glances over at Kat, thoughtful, then looks back at Gar. ] So, the spells she's studying -- are they for the mission?

[With an epic Wisdom fail, Mark totally doesn't notice her talking or looking at him, because he's so wrapped up in his music. And then he proceeds to hold his hands against his mouth to ... enhance his beat boxing. Yep.]

Well, they might be, depending on what we actually get done when we arrive today.

Spells actually take a great deal of time to cast. So in order to have them ready to go at a moment's notice, she must take the time to begin every spell she might want at her command for the next day or so, but leave off the last step that would complete the casting. That way, when a situation arises that calls for the spell, all the complicated magic will already be completed and she can simply say a trigger word or make a gesture that will cast the pre-prepared magic.

It's of course very difficult for a mage to suspend that much half-finished magic at any time, so younger mages can only manage to juggle a few. So she has to think ahead every day to what kind of spells she might wish to use in the next twenty four hours or so and prepare only those. [You asked for a lecture on this, didn't you?]

[He puts on a totally innocent face, holding up both hands] Nothing.

[slays]

[ Oh. That was ... a lot of talking. She blinks as she swallows the great big pill of information and slowly nods. Okay, processing. ] So, how's she decide? I mean, Wynn said there was no way of knowing what you'd need us to do.

[bigbad]

[He tilts his head curiously.] That's clever. Probably less unwieldy than a real book. You're a mage?

[bigbad]

[He relaxes a bit at that, letting his hands fall back down so he can look at her. He's not sure unattractive is the word he'd use, but... infuriating definitely fits.] It's not like it changes anything about me. And I'm bloody sure she hasn't told me everything either.

[bigbad]

[He glares a little more and starts stalking back to his seat.] Better be nothing.

She'll try to cover a wide range of possibilities: some spells for combat, or defense, but most likely those with general usefulness, such as a Light spell or... or Mage Hand which duplicates the effects of very minor telekinesis or...

[Welp, Kat's listen check makes it clear she's overheard at least part of this. She loudly interjects with:]

Fast Food spell. Never leave home without it.

That's me, yeah. What of it?

There's a spell for that?

Or maybe she has and she's just jealous that she doesn't have anything interesting left up her sleeve.

[...He really doubts that. Buffy seems... far too fascinating to be that simple or petty. But he doesn't know how he feels about her, especially not now, so he just shrugs.] Or she just really doesn't like blokes with bad teeth.

What sorts of spells do you do?

Well, hey, a big part of magic is convenience - no reason it can't develop with the times.

Well, simple stuff like dazing somebody or sending someone a message from far away, or turning something into a glowing flashlight... Or I could make myself look different, or make something work without batteries... or read everything off a flash drive just by touching it.
