Strange winds have blown in, bringing on an unusually chill winter in New Zealand. The ground crunches underfoot with snow, the days growing shoter and stars holding court in the darkness reigning above. An unnatural cold permeates the town, and the river's jubilant voice is frozen under the ice. Birds abandon their nests for warmer climes, their songs silenced by winter's grim embrace. But the frozen riverbank now hosts a shimmering respite from the gloomy cold in the form of garish tents, joyful shouts, and sumptuous smells. Vaale's Carnival has come to town.

Gaiety and laughter cut through the cold wind, and even the sky-shy sun peeks its face from around the gathering winter clouds. Children squeal with delight and gasp in awe at the sights, sounds, and smells of Vaale's Carnival. The Titan's Wheel creaks and groans as a burly lumberjack tests his might wit a hefty spin, a family rushes giggling into the sprawling ice maze to the north, and dozens of happy skaters flit about the rinks atop the frozen river. Carnival dolls are handed to wide-eyed townspeople as prizes and a menagerie of freakish creatures and glowing lights beckons the curious. Garish skirts and scanty veils call others to a different breed of voyeurism altogether. Treats and wonders abound for young and old to enjoy, and for a time, the harsh winter is forgotten in joyful revelry. There's nothing to indicate any sinister going on whatsoever, as the group surveys the happy smiles of the crowd.

[ Guess whose been hanging on hook line and sinker? Yep, he buys all of it even if he cant make sense of it, cause he dont know Kenzi.]

[ she calmly regards them from where she sits, smiling mysteriously at Mars. ] Ah, but you did ask for three readings, did you not?

She did!

[ So exitable he is.]

Then I presume you should like to be next, young man.

Yeah. [ yup, he's excited.]

Do you seek enlightenment on some specific matter?

[charismapotion]

[ He thought about it for a moment before nodding some.]

Yeah, actually.

[succubestie]

[Bo looks over at Mars, gesturing for him to sit and take his turn.]

I think this is the part where you tell her what it is.

[charismapotion]

[ He moved to take a seat. He hadn't realized for some reason he'd have to speak it allowed. So he took a breath.]

Will I ever see my mother again? [ he asked lower then anything else he had spoke that day, praying the answer is no.]

[ she nods solemnly, laying out three cards once more. she touches the back of the first one. ] This card will represent the forces and influences at play, that are beyond the immediacy of whether you will or will not see her, perhaps. But they are like ripples in a pond and will play some part.

[ she flips it over to reveal the Queen of Swords, reversed. the queen's right hand raises her sword vertically and the hilt rests on an arm of the throne. her countenance is severe but chastened, suggesting familiarity with sorrow. ] The reversal indicates malice - sometimes bigotry or deceit.

A bad woman. [ she looks up at him with a raised eyebrow ] With ill will towards yourself.

[ He watched paying close attention as she explained what the card means, the last bit me gave a bitter smile, then took a breath and nodded.] That'd be her.

[ she flips over this one next. ] Interesting. A pair, they are. This card represents the problem itself. Things now coming into effect that may complicate things - or make them easier to untangle. The King of Swords holds the power of life or death. He commands authority. A powerful figure, who holds much sway over others. Someone in your own life who exercises authority over you, perhaps. Someone who may use that same authority to grant you your own life - or send you to your near death.

[charismapotion]

[ He nodded, trying to figure out if she meant Wynn with that. But he nodded all the same. Curious still on what the last one would say.]

[ the final card has the words justice inscribed below the image. ]

An interesting card for the future, given what you ask. This card implies that in the end, those who have done wrong will meet with their just desserts. Perhaps whatever she has done to you will be righted - or she will be punished for it.

[ Mars nodded, and finally smiled a bit again.] Thank you, Ma'am.

[ Time for him to stand up so Bo can sit. That was just what he wanted to hear.]

[behindcloseddoors]

[ the fortune teller looks over to bo, shuffling her cards slowly. ]

And you, my dear? What is it you seek?

[succubestie]

[She slides into the chair, crossing one leg over the other.]

I'm curious about the weather around here. Maybe you can tell me when it'll warm up around here.

[Is she asking because of the mission, or to avoid talking about herself? The world may never know.]

[behindcloseddoors]

[ a canny look lights her eyes, and she chuckles a bit, laying out the cards. ] Ah yes, this unseasonable clime of ours... Let's see what the cards say about this.

[ she reveals the first card, upside down. ] The Seven of Pentacles. Its reversal indicates apprehension in the environment. Impatience, perhaps, for this winter of ours to end. Suspicion, over its cause.

[succubestie]

[Bo crosses her arms over her chest, looking down at the card then back up at the woman.]

Go on.

[If that's actually what the card means, then that's pretty uncanny. Or she could just be making it all up, not that Bo's probably going to be able to tell one or the other (sense motive 12).]

[behindcloseddoors]

[ the woman seems to take a certain joy in the telling, but there's nothing to indicate she's not telling the truth.

the second card is dealt upside down. ] A reversed Four of Swords to represent the root of this problem. Avarice, or a desire for something that is withheld. Someone in a position of authority. A strange card for this problem, wouldn't you say, dear?

[succubestie]

[Bo is not known for her intelligence, okay. But she's...sort of following along.]

You could say that. What's the last one?

[behindcloseddoors]

[ she hovers her hand over it, ready to flip it over, when a bloodcurdling scream issues from nearby outside the tent, in the direction of the ice maze. it lasts for a few seconds, before cutting off very abruptly, leaving an ominous silence. ]

[succubestie]

[Every muscle in her body freezes as her head whips toward the door, then to each of her companions, then back at the fortune teller.]

Hold that thought.

[She can't exactly ignore a scream now can she? She gets to her feet and is on the move a moment later, assuming the other two will follow her.]

Wait! [ the woman grabs bo's arm abruptly and suddenly pulls out something from beneath the table. ] A wand of shatter.

When the time comes, use it well.

[ Mars didn't even wait for her to head out, he was already heading out because screams like that are never good.]
