Strange winds have blown in, bringing on an unusually chill winter in New Zealand. The ground crunches underfoot with snow, the days growing shoter and stars holding court in the darkness reigning above. An unnatural cold permeates the town, and the river's jubilant voice is frozen under the ice. Birds abandon their nests for warmer climes, their songs silenced by winter's grim embrace. But the frozen riverbank now hosts a shimmering respite from the gloomy cold in the form of garish tents, joyful shouts, and sumptuous smells. Vaale's Carnival has come to town.

Gaiety and laughter cut through the cold wind, and even the sky-shy sun peeks its face from around the gathering winter clouds. Children squeal with delight and gasp in awe at the sights, sounds, and smells of Vaale's Carnival. The Titan's Wheel creaks and groans as a burly lumberjack tests his might wit a hefty spin, a family rushes giggling into the sprawling ice maze to the north, and dozens of happy skaters flit about the rinks atop the frozen river. Carnival dolls are handed to wide-eyed townspeople as prizes and a menagerie of freakish creatures and glowing lights beckons the curious. Garish skirts and scanty veils call others to a different breed of voyeurism altogether. Treats and wonders abound for young and old to enjoy, and for a time, the harsh winter is forgotten in joyful revelry. There's nothing to indicate any sinister going on whatsoever, as the group surveys the happy smiles of the crowd.

So, that's what's responsible, a guy riding a dead deer wearing a bunch of icicle blades?

the intoxicating woman waves her hand across the snow, and a small collection of vials appears.

"Drink this and you will not fall prey to the rider's magic. He carries an iridescent purple flower of living ice called the Eye of Rapture, enchanted to cloak horror and agony in a guise of mirth and merriment. So long as this crystal remains unspoiled, your people will continue their revels as the fey cut them down. You must stop the slaughter. Only by frustrating the Cold Rider can you force him to appear, so you can end these people's suffering once and for all."

lis'sa looks skeptically at the vials for a moment, before nodding at everyone to grab one. ]

Eye of Rapture, huh?

[Bo eyes the vials as well before she glances towards Lis'sa, who seems to give the go ahead. She shrugs her shoulders briefly before she takes one of them, lifting it slightly as if in toast.]

Bottoms up.

[And then she knocks it back without another thought.]

[ He's too much of a bleeding heart, and far too trusting. Yep, he follows Bo's lead and tosses one back.]

Sounds like a Nic Cage movie... [Cold Rider. Ghost - Look you can't expect her to listen without throwing in her muttered two cents here and there.

Even with the go ahead from Lis'sa, Kenzi continues to eye the vial with suspicion as she takes it, watching Bo and Mars down theirs before she - yep - raises her hand.]

Um, hi. Yeah. Naked lady. Before I drink the koolaid.... There's not like people in this right? Or the tears of babies and new born puppies or anything? I try to make a point of not putting anything in my mouth without knowing what it is first. [Without even looking she levels a finger at Klaus.] Not a word.

[Oh, Kenzi. it appears you know him all too well. But that won't stop Klaus from smiling with amusement when she pre-emptively shuts him down. Four for you, Kenzi.

In the meantime, Klaus grabs for one of the bottles as well. Like Kenzi, however, he is hesitant to drink it just yet. Sorry, blind trust isn't something he practices very often, if ever.

Klaus is actually impressed with Kenzi's caution right now, even if he isn't vocalizing as much. Mainly because he's an ass, but also because he has his own questions, like--]

Since we're sating curiosities, I thought it might be prudent to ask whether or not this concoction of yours has any lasting effects--particularly ill effects where vampires or werewolves are concerned. [Or, you know, both.]

[ "Fear not, child of moon and night. This will not harm the otherworldy, as it was born from moonlight, distilled into this liquid by fey magic. " lis'sa watches bo and mars out of the corner of her eye for a moment, before downing hers as well silently. it's difficult to pinpoint what the flavor is - it's both heavy and light, warm and cold, and tingles against the tongue.]

[She glances over at Kenzi and Klaus, waiting for them to follow suit.]

See, it's fine. Don't be a couple of scaredy cats.

[Kenzi shoots Bo an annoyed look that... because it's Kenzi, manages to seem more comical than pissed off.

Even still, she lifts the vial to her lips and wags the same finger at her now. (WS 8)]

If I sprout horns there's a boob punch in your future, woman. [She does however, knock it back like she's doing shots at a bar, making a face and scraping her tongue with her teeth as it starts to tingle.]

[ Mars was just amused and ready to go help save the day.]

[ as they wait for klaus to man up, lis'sa asks: ] Who is this one you speak of, who could stand against the Cold Rider?

[ syntira answers: "The master of the carnival, the half-elf for whom steel and shadow dance as one - he is their slave now. The rider has his wife imprisoned in a shard of deep black ice. Namdrin Vaale swore an unbreakable oath of the old world not to interfere with the Cold Rider's revenge, and in return his wife will be free of the ice shard prison that binds her fast. But Namdrin is betrayed. The crystal feeds on his love's soul, and the only freedom she will know is horrible death, her soul consumed by the evil of the shard. Namdrin cannot break his oath, but you could free him of his bond. If you can destroy the shard and free his wife, the compact will be sundered, and the half-elf will rise against his tormentors and aid you." ]

So...find the wife of this half-elf, break whatever it is she imprisoned in, and we've got ourselves another weapon against this Cold Rider?

Soooo... We're looking for an ice shard in a snow storm?! [Just clarifying here while they wait on Klaus to stop being a little bitch.] Needle. Haystack. Anyone?!

[ "One more thing. The Rider is a fell foe. His antlers twist, stab, and pierce the flesh of mortals with a life of their own. His glaive freezes blood in the vein. As long as ice is near, his wounds knit and seal, and he cannot be easily slain. Fire and shattering force, or the vibrations of sound, can destroy him best. His armor is thick, but can be sundered by magic, if you know the proper spell." ]

[She pulls out the wand she got earlier, remembering what the lady said.]

Think a wand of shatter might do the trick?

"Precisely. It will be a very effective weapon against the Cold Rider. But we have dallied here long enough. You should hurry back to the fairgrounds, save what mortals you can." ]
