There are plenty of missions that return to the castle a success - most of them, even. The defeated air of the solemn group that returns from their diplomatic mission to Andres Isle to hear the demands of dictator Dimitris Sarandis makes it quite clear that this wasn't one of those.

Starting with Sarandis' actual demands - for all Knights to withdraw from Andres under penalty of death, or for Wynn to offer his own head in return for Thomas' safe return - and ending with the unexpected, disturbing confession from Kat that she intended to stay behind on the island because she had "fallen in love with" the dictator, the events of the island made it very clear that Sarandis was cannily playing his hand to get the Knights where he wanted them.

Fred Jr. shoves open the doors with his unnatural strength, stalking in ahead of the group into the lobby. Whoever's on desk duty isn't going to have to roll a high wisdom check to see that these people are pissed... and distraught... and a myriad of other emotions on the bad end of the scale.

*I am changing the date of the briefing log and Andres log/live session to have taken place in September, to avoid us being in backdated hell forever, and to allow for a September squiring ceremony before apps are closed. Carry on... in the future!

[He rolls his eyes, though he's trying to be lighthearted.] I'm here now.

[ And you know what else is? Staying in casa de Wynn for free. She's just saying. ]

[Oh my god, Buffy, you're busting his balls. He glances behind him to make sure no one's listening and then leans in.]

[WOW HE ASSUMED THE FACT THAT GAR IS HUNG UP ON JACK AND HE HAS A BOYFRIEND WOULD MAKE THAT CLEARER....]

I gave her a lift to see Jack in London. [Duh.] They had a good talk.

[ oh, good. a smile starts to build on her face. she's too uncertain to let it get to full grin territory, but she's clearly catching on. ]

[Des holds up his hand and wiggles his ring finger and then taps his lips in the universal shush gesture.]

Let's just say they had a few moments of enlightenment between them.

Can you blame them? There's gonna be a war. Everyone gets a little caught up in the moment when they think someone they love is gonna die. Sometimes for the worst and sometimes... Well. That happens.

It's just ... so sudden. I mean, making out one day, marriage the next? I get that things are dicey right now, but ... [ she sighs. ] Oh, who am I kidding? I'm just glad. That should mean he's staying, right?

They've been building to this a long time. Something just... snapped that day. After that, things fell into place. It's not like it don't happen.

[He's old and experienced.] Yeah, Gar thinks he oughta go to save his rep, but it's like I told her- history's gonna remember Jack Chessing the way it wants to. He could save a hundred lives on Andres and they'll probably still remember him as the guy who said screw protocols and fell in love with a librarian.

She's more than just a librarian, Des. I think it's a lot more likely that history's gonna remember him as the guy who fell in love with Jeanne Gar.

[ because she's Important. andres made that hella obvious. ]

[Des smirks.] I did try and tell her that. Poor girl couldn't grasp what the hell that Dragon's Claw saw in her.

[He laughs a little.] It takes a lot of brains and a lot more heart to figure out whether or not the direction you're going is the one you want to be on or the one people expect you to be on. If you ask me- [he reaches over to steal some of her food]- that's a lesson a lot of people need to learn.

[ Her brow furrows and she stares at Des like iT WAS A JOKE. BECAUSE SMART PEOPLE DO RUN SCREAMING. But ok. She's just blinking it off and shaking her head. ]

Forget it.

[ She shoves her plate towards him, smiling. Not today. ]

[He blinks and realizes what he did.]

...That didn't warrant any ex-immortal existentialism, did it?

[He laughs.] It's been a hell of a night. [He reaches over and squeezes her shoulder before digging into the food. On nom.]

Been a lot of those going around.

[ In fact, they could do with a few less. Buffy doesn't look too bothered, though, all things considered. Offering him a shrug of dismissal, she looks patently unbothered by him getting all deep and reflect-y on her. ]

Maybe a few less, after this.

A few. But maybe we'll get five minutes of peace before Draken and Chad unleash the death ray.

[Dimitris is just one player. Sure he's a big deal, but he wasn't the one who started it, so expecting him to be what finishes it is foolish.] But one solid victory's what we need right now.

I'm not sure most of us would know what to do with a real victory if we had one. The rest of the Knighthood may be slightly more familiar, but personally, I've been waiting for one for years now. [ A beat. ] I mean, I guess Rafael's not in jail. That's a win.

[nothingsodivine]

[Des considers that for a second.] Yeah, we'll always have "getting the political assassin out of jail free" to spice up our resumes.

[slay]

[ She nods like yep that's it. ]
