There are plenty of missions that return to the castle a success - most of them, even. The defeated air of the solemn group that returns from their diplomatic mission to Andres Isle to hear the demands of dictator Dimitris Sarandis makes it quite clear that this wasn't one of those.

Starting with Sarandis' actual demands - for all Knights to withdraw from Andres under penalty of death, or for Wynn to offer his own head in return for Thomas' safe return - and ending with the unexpected, disturbing confession from Kat that she intended to stay behind on the island because she had "fallen in love with" the dictator, the events of the island made it very clear that Sarandis was cannily playing his hand to get the Knights where he wanted them.

Fred Jr. shoves open the doors with his unnatural strength, stalking in ahead of the group into the lobby. Whoever's on desk duty isn't going to have to roll a high wisdom check to see that these people are pissed... and distraught... and a myriad of other emotions on the bad end of the scale.

*I am changing the date of the briefing log and Andres log/live session to have taken place in September, to avoid us being in backdated hell forever, and to allow for a September squiring ceremony before apps are closed. Carry on... in the future!

[Surprisingly enough, you won't actually find Alaric at one of the bars following Wynn's announcement. He's retreated to the Hoard lab to tinker with his weapons for most of the evening. It's not exactly likely that they'll be going up against an army of vampires, but most of his shit can be easily modified to hurt just about anything they may come up against.

And when he can no longer use his work to keep his mind from wandering, he drops by Elena's room briefly before turning in for the night. It's sentimental and dumb, but she still fills the majority of his thoughts throughout the day--especially now that everything is coming to a head, and they'll be taking the fight right to where she's been the whole time.]

[Helen's also been in the lab a great deal of her time, gearing up and trying to finish up any last minute projects, get her notes in order... just in case. Once she realizes he's also lingering in the lab, Helen makes her way over, no smile to greet him this time. In fact, she doesn't say anything at all at first, just comes over and rests her hand over his as she steps up beside his work station.]

[Alaric already knows its Helen before he even looks up at her. He just stares at her hand over his for a long moment, like he's not sure that he should even say what's on his mind. Yes, he's worried about Elena--but more than that, he's worried about the other fresh-faced recruitst hat were going to be asked to potentially give up their lives for something that a lot of them might not even fully grasp.

Alright, so maybe Lila, Lydia, and Faye were a lot more with it than that, but still. They had their whole lives ahead of them and it made his stomach turn to think that something horrible might happen to any one of them.]

What if we aren't ready for this? [There's probably a million different meanings behind that question, but if anyone could understand the scope of what he meant by it, it was Helen.]

We aren't. [She responds quietly, because it sort of applies across the board.] But life doesn't always wait until we're ready. There are times when the only moment that matters, the only one that can matter is right now.

[Kate wanders down to the Hoard labs to investigate the equipment, mostly because it's a way of keeping herself busy as well. When she spots Alaric, she veers off course a bit, coming to stand next to him at his work station.]

Keeping busy?

[He glances over when someone else comes up beside him, and manages a really sad attempt at a smile in greeting before he looks back down at the idk anti-vampire crossbow bolts/darts that he's got laid out in front of him.]

Trying to. I don't expect we'll be running into many vampires out there.

[But then he realizes she's not really a regular around here, and he's probably being kind of rude. So he forgets about his project and turns toward her, so that she has his full attention.]

Did you need help finding something?

[She gives a bit of a shrug, before shaking her head.]

Having a hard time settling, which means sleep isn't exactly easy. Going to war is a lot to think about.

[To the point where she can't even manage to force her brain to shut off. Self-preservation at war with the loyalty and desire to fight for something - it's not easy instincts to contend with, especially when they're both happening at once.]

[Faith is actually good with the whole war thing. She figures that's the whole point of them being here and she's been a bit tired of just running errands and doing the small things. It might be a touch of that whole wanting to be "done" with this whole redemption thing, but mostly it's just her feeling idle. Being in prison had kept her off the fight and now that she's not having to worry about that - she wants to do something.

She assumes she knows where to find Alaric, so she heads there to see if she can talk to him before they all head out.]
