There are plenty of missions that return to the castle a success - most of them, even. The defeated air of the solemn group that returns from their diplomatic mission to Andres Isle to hear the demands of dictator Dimitris Sarandis makes it quite clear that this wasn't one of those.

Starting with Sarandis' actual demands - for all Knights to withdraw from Andres under penalty of death, or for Wynn to offer his own head in return for Thomas' safe return - and ending with the unexpected, disturbing confession from Kat that she intended to stay behind on the island because she had "fallen in love with" the dictator, the events of the island made it very clear that Sarandis was cannily playing his hand to get the Knights where he wanted them.

Fred Jr. shoves open the doors with his unnatural strength, stalking in ahead of the group into the lobby. Whoever's on desk duty isn't going to have to roll a high wisdom check to see that these people are pissed... and distraught... and a myriad of other emotions on the bad end of the scale.

*I am changing the date of the briefing log and Andres log/live session to have taken place in September, to avoid us being in backdated hell forever, and to allow for a September squiring ceremony before apps are closed. Carry on... in the future!

I... I suppose I hadn't thought of it that way. You'd be surprised, just how many different excuses I was capable of coming up with on the plane ride. I thought perhaps you were simply trying to... to do the right thing.

Well, I certainly am trying to do precisely that. And I've had a bit of time to mull over what that might mean. [ there's a dry humor in his voice as he adds: ] ... At the encouragement of some of your friends, as well.

Jeanne, the truth of it is... I've been in love with you for a very long time. I tried, I certainly tried, to do everything I could to drive these thoughts from my mind, afraid of what it might cost you as well as me if I forsook the oaths I'd sworn to. But whatever it was that came over us both the other evening, it wasn't born of a moment's impulse. And while I certainly regret the situation in which it placed us, I can't bring myself to regret that it meant stealing so much as a moment with you.

You-- [ gar sounds absolutely thunderstruck by the pronouncement. ] Jack, I--

the tenderness in jack's tone cuts through all his usual decorum, and he sounds even a bit nervous as he says: ] You might think me mad for this, and perhaps I am. But whatever the consequences, I can't stand and watch what might have been pass by, all to keep Wynn satisfied. If this is what it takes him for him to recognize that this isn't merely some momentary infatuation, then so be it, but his reaction is hardly my primary concern.

[ there's a beat, and she gasps, before saying "Is that--" ] It was my mother's. The... trip, that I took this morning. And I certainly understand if you refuse, or if this seems... sudden, but between the inevitable conflict and-- everything else we face, I've come to realize that I've no desire to deny my own feelings for any longer.

If we both return from Andres - when we do - when this is all said and done, Jeanne...

[Des manages to keep it together and not cry like a bitch out here in the hall, BECAUSE THAT WAS SO MOVING, but since he's the only one out here, he's allowed to look somber a little bit.

[ for a moment, there's just stunned silence, but then she replies breathlessly: ] Yes. Yes, of course, Jack, of course, I-- [ but her words are cut off and it's probably because her lips are busy in there. ]

[Awww you crazy kids. :,) Des breaks out in a wide grin and and casts a look to the ceiling like 'wow. this is the kind of thing that makes people cry in the movie theaters.'"]

[ look she got a good wisdom check to remember you're out there, des, and with what sounds like a big smile on her face, she murmurs: ] I can't believe this is really happening... [ and then abruptly: ] Oh! I left Mr. Descant in the lobby, and he's-- he's likely waiting for me to come back. I should--

[ jack chuckles a bit, and then gar slips into the hallway and pulls up short, clearly surprised to find des right there, but not mad in the slighest. in fact, she's positively glowing. ] Oh! Des, I'm-- I was going to tell you that if you wanted to, I think I can find... my own ride back to the castle.

[Des smirks at her. Yeah, I bet you do, gurl.] You crazy kids have fun.

[ yeah her 20+ wis check means she FIGURES OUT YOU EAVESDROPPED but she really really doesn't care. she just smiles up at him warmly, and then reaches out abruptly to give him a quick hug. ] Thank you.

[HE CARES EVEN LESS. But oh wow. Surprise hugs. He freezes a bit and then he wraps his arms around her to return the embrace.] Don't mention it.

I'll see you tomorrow. [ and with that, she turns on her heel and flounces back into the room~ ]
