There are plenty of missions that return to the castle a success - most of them, even. The defeated air of the solemn group that returns from their diplomatic mission to Andres Isle to hear the demands of dictator Dimitris Sarandis makes it quite clear that this wasn't one of those.

Starting with Sarandis' actual demands - for all Knights to withdraw from Andres under penalty of death, or for Wynn to offer his own head in return for Thomas' safe return - and ending with the unexpected, disturbing confession from Kat that she intended to stay behind on the island because she had "fallen in love with" the dictator, the events of the island made it very clear that Sarandis was cannily playing his hand to get the Knights where he wanted them.

Fred Jr. shoves open the doors with his unnatural strength, stalking in ahead of the group into the lobby. Whoever's on desk duty isn't going to have to roll a high wisdom check to see that these people are pissed... and distraught... and a myriad of other emotions on the bad end of the scale.

*I am changing the date of the briefing log and Andres log/live session to have taken place in September, to avoid us being in backdated hell forever, and to allow for a September squiring ceremony before apps are closed. Carry on... in the future!

I don't really have a ton of time to practice. War is literally tomorrow. But I'm a quick study. I just... I need to know where to even start.

Alright.

[She places the cage down on the bench, before opening the latch on the door, so that her red-tailed hawk can climb out and onto her wrist.]

What spells have you done so far?

Uh-- [Stiles flips through his notebook to show some of his notes. It's mostly level 0 stuff for the most part. Ghost Sound, Mage Hand, Detect Magic. But he's really into the Summon Monster spell too. Lots of notes on that.] These, mostly.

[He hands over his notes.]

[She raises her eyebrows a bit at the notes around Summon Monster.]

So you like a good creature feature?

Yeah, I guess so. It's just really cool. I mean it's basically like having your own pokemon. Not that I still... play pokemon.

[She vaguely remembers what Pokemon are, despite the fact that it was so not her generation (pop culture 15). The narration is going to chalk this one up to Lucy and leave it at that.]

What about elements? Found one that you like yet?

Nothing really jumps out yet. I mean the obvious flashy stuff would be fire, right? Big bang for your buck there. But I'm from California so I've got a healthy respect for earthquakes.

[She nods a bit.]

Earthquakes are definitely cool. Personally, I'm a fire girl, but acid can also be a good time, when needed.

[He raises an eyebrow.] You're not a drug dealer, are you?

[That's an acid joke. haha so funny.]

[She laughs a bit at that, her tone oh-so-dry.]

You've caught me. I'm out there, corrupting young minds.

I knew it. So what's your favorite spell?

Interesting question.

[She closes the notebook and hands it back to him.]

Offensively or defensively?

Yes? [WHY NOT BOTH!]

[She laughs.]

Alright, offensively first.

[Because those are way more fun. She pauses before casting Flaming Sphere, letting it sit for a moment on a the stone patio. It's a ball of fire about four feet high, and as she moves her hand it rolls around in the enclosed area.]

I can move it wherever I want, can make it jump - [which she will demonstrate] - or head towards a particular target. Only lasts about half a minute, but you can do a lot in thirty seconds.

I see why you like the fire stuff. That's crazy.

[She nods as she extinguishes it. It's something powerful to channel her energy into.]

I like acid too, but those spells for me are a little rusty.

[She pauses for a moment before turning back to face him again.]

As for defensive ...

[She casts Disguise Self, and mostly works with what she's got in front of her. It's not her best cast, mostly because she's been doing magic for him for a good long while, but it's still pretty awesome (disguise 21). Stiles is basically looking at a double of himself, and she'll just smirk a bit before waggling her fingers in a wave. Stiles needs a will save of 15+ to recognize it as an illusion.]

[Well he got over a 20 on his will, but that's likely explained by him watching her cast it. It's still cool as hell.

Also kind of weird to see himself waggling his fingers like that.]

Wow, that would definitely come in handy. How long can you hold that?

About an hour.

[Another thing that's probably weird? Hearing Malina's voice coming out of Stiles's mouth. But that doesn't last for long as she breaks the illusion soon after.]

It took me a while to get that good at it though.

Yeah? How long have you been studying this stuff? [He's a bit distracted from his original plan to write down a bunch of spells before war. Magic is cool and distracting.]

[Magic is very distracting, this is true. She lets out a slow exhale as she tries to think.]

Well, I started to show aptitude when I was a kid, but I didn't actually start practicing until I was sixteen. Even then I was learning from my dad who was a scam aritist more than anything else. I didn't start really learning until I joined the Knights, which was ... ten years ago, now?

I'm guess I'm not starting as late in the game as I thought.

[She shakes her head.]

When your teenager is the best time to learn, really. You're more willing to push limits then and see how far you can go.

[Which she actually advocates, even though she probably shouldn't. That's how Voldemorts happen, probably, but when you're a kid you can just throw yourself into it and damn the consequences.]

Pushing the envelope, that's me. [He manages a small smile.] I appreciate you helping me out, but I'm sure you have better things to do with your last night before we head for war.

Hey, if you're going to be going, you might need it.

[Which, for the record, she doesn't look like she's thrilled with the fact that he's considering it, but she knows teenagers and it's highly likely she wouldn't be able to stop him. Especially considering they just met and all.]

Just be careful.

Will do. I've got standing orders to do just that from a handful of people around here. I'll do my best to make it back in one piece. Maybe we could talk more spells then.
