The "afterparty" is rumored to be the real main event of the night. A black-tie affair in the lavish, opulent ballroom, it is every new Knight's chance to mingle and meet some of their new brothers in arms. Of course, a couple hours are provided following the ceremony for everyone to change, do hair and makeup, and choose from the vast array of formal attire in the closets of the balcony "dressing rooms" located at the top of spiraled staircases on either side of the ballroom. A separate dressing room exists for men and women, and they include full bathrooms (with, thankfully, very modern plumbing).

The squires are usually among the last to arrive, and the ballroom is full to the brim with a fancy array of people, of all shapes, sizes and species.

Hope you aren't shy. They're all here to meet you.

Feel free to make your own open threads for people to come congratulate your newly pledged knight.

ooc; also if your Knight wants to get all gussied up, you can make a Disguise (Cha) check for how good they were at hair/makeup/stylin', etc! This goes for... any time.

he does sniff it experimentally, because trust doesn't come easily to him, but at least it looks like he's smelling what it is and not checking for poison. Satisfied he downs it.] This place is too fancy for me.

[She laughs a bit before nodding.]

That's what I said when I first got here too. You just have to take a little time to get used to it.

Do I even wanna get used to it? Last thing I need is to start becomin' a fancypants who sips that bubbly crap and talks about... I dunno. Honor and all that shit he was spoutin' at the ceremony. [He tries to take another sip of the whiskey and... realizes he drank all of it. Dammit.] Quill would laugh me outta the stratosphere and then I'd have to shoot him in his knee.

[She smirks a bit at that.]

Don't worry. Getting used to things being fancy doesn't mean you sacrifice who you are. It just means that you can navigate things a little better when you need to.

[She is hardly the most cultured and sophisticated knight of the bunch, but she can give a good front when she needs to.]

I don't think bein' able to navigate is gonna help me. [in case you haven't noticed, he is a raccoon.] Blendin' in ain't my strong suit.

[She shakes her head.]

It's not about blending in so much as being able to make their heads explode when they expect you to make a mess of things. Personally I'm a fan of getting people to take their snide comments and low-brow expectations and shove it up their ass.

[Which is why she's not a member of the Dragon's Tongue.]

But Koriath is one of our most polished diplomats and he doesn't exactly blend in either. Shit like this is what you make of it.

It's not that I freakin' care what they think. [mildly defensive, before it dials it back.] I'm fine bein' what I am. I just-

[He makes an agitated noise, because it's hard to verbalize when you're too sober to get thoroughly emotional about a deeply private matter.]

[She holds up her hands a bit.]

I never said there's anything wrong with what you are. I just know from experience that people can be a steaming pile of dicks when they want to be. There's nothing wrong with giving them a taste of their own medicine their way.

he flattens his ears, looking more put-out than angry.] Sorry. I don't typically deal with this many people outside of business. [He only had a team five minutes before he was yanked through the Veil and that was a year ago.] After what happened on Andres, my guard's up. Shit like that ain't happenin' again.

[he knows the knights aren't the sort of people who'll sell him out or string him up for being a freak that shouldn't exist, but a part of him is just wary as hell.]

[Malina knows how gunshy goes. But she's also been on the outside for almost her entire life and the knights were the first place for her that actually felt like home. She's been there for so long that she forgets what it can feel like to be new.

And being new sucked a lot. So she'll step away from that and focus on the thing she can do something about.]

No, it won't. Anyone tries and I'll personally set them on fire if you don't get to them first.

[She's really not kidding. She doesn't tolerate any of that crap.]

[His expression doesn't change much, though his ears sort of flick up and down like he's debating whether or not he should protest needing to be protected. He's so far past the point of "I'm fine on my own" that the words don't come.

And she did say "if he didn't get to them first," so that perks him up.]

If it comes to that, I'll save some for you, all right?

[Malina doesn't see it as protection so much as knowing that there's someone in his corner, no matter what. It can mean a lot just by simply knowing you're not alone.

Still, she smiles and nods.]

I appreciate that.

[they fall into a comfortable silence for a moment, before rocket adds, without preamble.] I'm lookin' forward to the part where I get to start shootin' things again.

[She nods a bit.]

We do that a lot. Wynn doesn't like to publicize because he wants people to actually join for the right reasons, but we shoot things all the time.

Just not at squiring parties.

[A beat.]

Usually.

I ain't even gonna lie. I'm at least 75% here 'cause bounty hunting went way south for me this last time.

[He shifts from one foot to another.] But I had a thing like this back home. It was just... smaller.

Usually most of the mission groups are smaller, maybe four or five people at a time. It's only for stuff like this that all of us are together and makes us look huge and intimidating.

[Never mind that there are also offices around the world so there are actually hundreds of them out there, but she's trying to make things seem more personable.]

Though some days I don't know how Wynn keeps track of us all.

[it's not the saaaame if it's not the same mission group. D:]

Part of his creepy and really unsettlin' charm, I guess.

[No, no it's not. But who knows, maybe he'll get lucky and wind up on a mission for six months or longer. =D (If he does, hopefully it won't be somewhere like Siberia.)]

You warm up to him after a while. Then again, I've been a recipient of that charm for more than a decade now.

[Maybe she's just become numb to it.]

He's not as terrifying as he seems.

Neither is Drax, but he'll still crush your larynx with his pinky if you screw with 'em. Only guy I ever been around who made me feel like I had to watch my step.

[and you know... try to be less of a sociopath.]

[She laughs a bit at that.]

He sounds like a real charmer.

I was talkin' about your boss. I say whatever the hell I want to Drax.

[which goes to show you how much wynn intimidates the fuuuck out of him.]

[Oh. Well then. That makes sense because Wynn is a complete badass. As she said - it's probably ten years of getting used to him.]

Did you always say whatever you wanted to Drax, even when you first met the guy?

[flashes back to Knowhere.]

Got into a barfight with 'em doin' just that.

[he was very drunk.]

[She laughs.]

Okay, I definitely would not want to get into a bar fight with Wynn. I don't think he even drinks.

[She's never seen it, anyway. He's always very composed.]

I admire his restraint. You think he'd need a few drinks to wrangle some of these idiots.
