Unlike the grandiose nature of the squiring ceremony each Knight undergoes upon their initial entrance into the Knighthood, the graduation to Full Knight status takes place in a much more intimate affair, between the Knight, their mentor, invited friends, and the members of the sect to which they will be inducted. There's no pompous music, no stolid rank and file, no elaborate march.

The Knight's new section head, Wynn, and their mentor Knight wait up at the front of the room for their approach, but the attitude of the ceremony is much more relaxed, full of smiles and light conversation on all sides. Of course, when Wynn speaks, people still hush. It's just how he rolls.

Yeah, like those cages people escape from when they're chained up? I made those. Handcuffs that unlock when you smack them a particular way. [ she fiddles with her hair awkwardly. ]

Interesting. I bet you could have went for Hoard, if you'd wanted to.

Probably. My parents would be pleased to see my college degree put to better use. [ she makes that face. the one college graduates have when they don't actually use the degree they spent all that money on. ] The upside, of course, is that I can afford to pay off my student loans now, so I've got that going for me.

I used my forensics degree to mend a crack in my ceiling. Didn't serve much other use, to be honest.

I don't even know where mine is? It's probably shoved in my old homework that I didn't want to throw away for some reason.

What school did you go to? [tries to have casual conversation like a normal person]

Wentworth Institute of Technology. It's in Boston and I didn't feel like paying room and board when my parents let me pay way less for rent.

Makes sense. My father wouldn't have — I went to George Washington on scholarship.

[ jelly. ] Where... is that? Like, Mount Vernon or something?

[mydesigns]

[he snorts a little.] Not quite. But it's in DC.

...is Mount Vernon not in DC?

[in what one can only assume is his slow child teacher voice] The Mount Vernon Estate is near Alexandria, Virginia, so it's in the DC area, but not in the exact same geographical location as the university.

I'm from Boston, DC and Virginia are the same thing to me.

[he just shrugs.] I'm from all over. Never stayed in one place very long growing up. Ended up settling just outside of DC.

I spent my entire life in the same house.

I ... can't even imagine what that's like.

Boring. [ she didn't dislike it, but she did dream of moving and traveling. ] My mom's family lived in Rhode Island and my dad's from Connecticut, so I don't think they ever thought about moving.

I don't really — [remember his parents' life stories. but it doesn't really matter, anyway, so he just moves along like] it doesn't matter. My dad worked in the boat yards. We went wherever there was work. Biloxi, Greenville, Lake Erie.

How come you guys never came to Newport? There's always work up there. Or Bath. [ a beat. ] You probably don't remember that and here I am -- sorry. I'm used to people being from Faerûn, but it's harder to get a handle on people like you, who are from worlds like this.

[he shrugs limply. maybe they could have, but he doesn't remember.] It's all right. Just another thing to make me feel awkward. I know, I pass, but I don't really feel like ... I fit. Didn't feel like I fit in with the other Shadowkind, either. Sometimes I felt like they thought I was just crazy at the shelter. Which, you don't need to tell me, I know I give that off, but ... [he shakes his head.] Sorry. I'm rambling.
