[Fortunately for Sam, this time around, when Dean arrives at the Castle? Sam hears about it.

He's made friends since back then, ones that know their relationship, and know that he would want to know. And they're right, because he's been waiting for this awhile, wants to know what took his brother so damn long to come home, wants to know if he'd being avoided on purpose or...no, it's probably on purpose.

Well, that was going to come to an end in a hurry. He doesn't particularly want this conversation, because it'll probably be uncomfortable and angry and horrible, but it has to happen. He can't sit on any of this forever.

Not when he's not the only one who knows.

So that afternoon, Dean will hear a rather...forceful knock on his door, following quickly by a voice.]

Dean, it's me. Let me in.

[Because he's not going away. Sorry, bro.]

[And epic fucking will save has him letting it go for now.]

I don't want to hold it against you. What he did. You get that, right?

I get it. I also know that it's probably easier said than done.

[He realizes he's like...a giant walking reminder of everything, okay.]

And sayin' it's not exactly easy in the first place.

I'm just trying to be straight with you. Hearing that they're already coming after you, that you agreed to listen to her, knowing what she was--

I get that I left you on the desperate side for answers, but none of that's exactly speaking to things going differently this time around. I don't know what I'm supposed to think.

[familybusiness]

There is no they, okay? It's just her, and she's not coming after me.

[His voice is exasperated, as if even talking about her has him agitated.]

You know how I know things will be different? Because we're both already sick of this. It has to stop, Dean. There's always going to be a chance that something's going to happen to me, or to you, and we can't let anyone keep using that.

[He's heard too much about the things that Dean did in Hell because he brought him back from the dead. His other self was no better.]

[ he seems vaguely irritated, but he clearly sees the sense in what sam's spinning, too ] You're right.

It's gotta end.

[familybusiness]

I'm not saying we don't watch out for each other. But there has to be a line.

[And it has to be before being Hell's lackey. Or Heaven's lackey for that matter.]

[Sam nods his head, before he extends his beer bottle towards him, intent on clinking their glass necks together.

As if they were shaking on it.]

[likedillinger]

[ this time there's no hesitation, and as he clinks the glass together, for a moment he looks like he wants to say something else, or even hug him, but he resists the urge visibly, hovering the beer in front of his lips for a second, before he downs a swig. ]

[familybusiness]

[He notices the movement, guessing what it implies, but he can't bring himself to be too upset by his brother's attempt to hold back. He's used to that, at least, and given this entire conversation, it might be too much to ask for.

Instead, he offers his brother as close to a smile as he can get considering the subject matter, putting the bottle to his lips and doing the same.]

I'm glad you're here, Dean.

[ while the appropriate comment might be to say the same thing back, they both know it's a little more complicated than that, and dean's a little too distracted by glancing over at sam as if he can't in good conscience believe that his brother feels that way, after everything. he studies him for a good long second, before taking another sip, not saying anything at all, in the end. ]

[familybusiness]

[And that's okay. He gets it. And of all the places he thought this conversation would go today, this was not the result he'd expected. If anything, he thought he might leave this place with a black eye and a bloody lip.

He'll take it and call it a victory. Even if only in the smallest of ways, he had his brother back.

They were even sharing a beer.]
