Well, that didn't stop you from eavesdropping. [She accuses, playfully.] Besides, I was just curious, and no one else knows what we're talking about anyway. It won't hurt my feelings if you pick Thomas. Or Arthur, I guess, although that might sting a little bit. [She gives him teasing smile to match her tone.]

Thomas enjoys the sound of his own voice far too much.

Maybe the opposite would work better for you. No one has ever accused Luthir of talking too much.

[Muttered:] Or of having a personality, for that matter.

[She'll just... ignore that for the moment, to keep the ball rolling.] So someone with a charming, yet reserved disposition then. Someone perhaps like Arthur, who can still carry his own weight?

I hardly think he could carry the weight of his head around, as large as it is.

I believe Ethan has been trained in the discipline of humility, being a soldier and all. They're usually forced to know their rank.

Not to mention completely unable to improvise without orders.

How about a sorcerer like Merlin? He must be skilled in improvisation, given his chosen magical focus. For all we know he might have written the very first spell book.

And he looks as if he's barely taken his very first steps. He might be the greatest wizard some day, but that day and that beard are long off.

What about Katniss then? Or is she too young to be a reasonable choice of survival companion as well? Her social skills may need work, but I must admit I find that kind of endearing. Best not to tell her that though. [She tags on conspiratorially.]

[His wit falters on him, which says a lot, because he's usually quick to insult ... everyone on the sun] I wouldn't call her too young to survive. But she's still too fresh to this world, and her lost memories may be a burden at this stage.

[His sudden serious response throws her off a bit, but she quickly realizes there's only one person left to choose. She can't tell if he's picked up on this fact yet or not. She just looks at him innocently, as if waiting for him to say something.]

So I suppose my options are limited.

Well, when you put it like that, how can I not feel flattered?

Unless, of course, you'd prefer to go it alone.

It's easier when they're someone to swap watch with.

So it wasn't my good company or physical talents that won you over? Or even my offer to cook you food in a bathing suit? Only an extra set of eyes so you can rest yours. Don't ask for much, huh?

Of course I took all such things into account.

[She grins a little wider than she intends to, but she's skilled at reading between the lines for his subtle compliments. She'll take what she can get.] I'll just pretend the process of elimination was for show then, and that it really wasn't that difficult of a decision.

If you'd prefer to see it that way.

I suppose not really. Delusions hold little weight with me. I try not to get my hopes up. [Her tone is still light, and it isn't until she spits out the words that she realizes how depressing she sounds.]

[Time to chipper this up a bit. Well, as chipper as she could actually ever be.] And I'll gladly cling to my bragging rights. [She gives him a winning smile, to show how pleased she really is.] At least you got there eventually, even if you were obviously my very first choice.
