The "afterparty" is rumored to be the real main event of the night. A black-tie affair in the lavish, opulent ballroom, it is every new Knight's chance to mingle and meet some of their new brothers in arms. Of course, a couple hours are provided following the ceremony for everyone to change, do hair and makeup, and choose from the vast array of formal attire in the closets of the balcony "dressing rooms" located at the top of spiraled staircases on either side of the ballroom. A separate dressing room exists for men and women, and they include full bathrooms (with, thankfully, very modern plumbing).

The squires are usually among the last to arrive, and the ballroom is full to the brim with a fancy array of people, of all shapes, sizes and species.

Hope you aren't shy. They're all here to meet you.

Feel free to make your own open threads for people to come congratulate your newly pledged knight.

ooc; also if your Knight wants to get all gussied up, you can make a Disguise (Cha) check for how good they were at hair/makeup/stylin', etc! This goes for... any time.

[She nods, seeming a bit distracted.]

Someone I knew a long time ago has been squired. And were it anyone else, I think I might have been more prepared for it, but... not for her, not for my daughter.

[Cora's eyes go a bit wide at that, before she turns and starts to scan the room, seeing if she can spot her and put it together, despite not knowing what she looks like, but that impulse doesn't last long.]

I don't think we can really be prepared for any of them. Especially not family - we sort of ... get used to the idea that we're never going to see them again, you know?

[Considering she watched that very same daughter die in front of her several decades ago. But she can't talk about that with Cora. She doesn't want to burden the girl.]

I never thought I'd see her again. I suppose I'm just afraid I'll say the wrong thing.

[Cora knows a bit about losing family, but it's probably for the best that you don't tell her she was dead. She might start having hope where there really isn't any. There's only a slim chance that the Veil will work the same way twice, and she's already gotten Derek, alive and well, even if he doesn't remember anything.]

You're her mom. If she's told what the rest of us were told and that there's no way she'd be able to get back through the Veil to you again, then I have a feeling she'll just be happy to see you. She won't really care if what you say is right or wrong as long as you're there.

[That is, of course, acting on the assumption that the Veil hasn't made Ashley forget Helen.]

[There's a part of her that feels guilty for not simply being overjoyed. It's more complicated than that, but there's something hopeful that Helen can hold onto in the way that Cora simplifies it.]

Perhaps you're right.

[It's how she would feel if she were seeing her own mother again, if the Veil had magically brought her through. She wouldn't care what she said, she would just care that she was there. Everything else they could figure out.

She gives Helen a small smile before nodding.]

Besides, you've been here long enough that you probably give a way better tour than most.

[She has to laugh at that, even if it is quietl.]

You do have a point there. Thank you, dear.

[She smiles more in return, before reaching over and giving her arm a gentle squeeze.]

It'll be okay.

[Maybe not immediately or even soon, but eventually it would be, one way or another. It's just a matter of figuring things out.]

[She nods and tries to give a more convincing smile.]

I'm sure it will. [Taking a deep breath, she gestures out to the party.] You should go enjoy yourself.

[Cora isn't entirely convinced by the smile (sense motive 29), but she knows that these things are the kinds of things that take time. So with that, she'll just nod and take a step back before wandering off. She'll check on Helen later. /scene]
