Unlike the grandiose nature of the squiring ceremony each Knight undergoes upon their initial entrance into the Knighthood, the graduation to Full Knight status takes place in a much more intimate affair, between the Knight, their mentor, invited friends, and the members of the sect to which they will be inducted. There's no pompous music, no stolid rank and file, no elaborate march.

The Knight's new section head, Wynn, and their mentor Knight wait up at the front of the room for their approach, but the attitude of the ceremony is much more relaxed, full of smiles and light conversation on all sides. Of course, when Wynn speaks, people still hush. It's just how he rolls.

[ Skye looks up at her with an expression of grieving sympathy that all too clearly recognizes that she won't have to imagine for that much longer, relative to her total lifespan. ]

Maybe I'll regret it when I'm older, but I know I'd regret it more if I missed out on these friendships. And I feel whole with people, you know? Human.

[ She nods, feeling as though she understands. ]

I feel like ... connecting with other people, that's the whole point. And what's the point of living practically forever if you're nto actually living?

Exactly! And like, I didn't think I was gonna live long at all so I kept people at arm's length because we all kept dying, but now... shit, we're all still dying, but I might last and I don't want to be old as balls and not have anything to show for it.

[hacker]

That's either very depressing or very inspirational. Probably both, come to think of it.

Both is probably right, yeah. Hashtag my life. But you gotta fight for that silver lining, otherwise what is the point?

[hacker]

I don't know. Seems like some people enjoy being miserable just to feel it.

[graveflowers]

And they have shitty lives. Not in the like, genuine actual problems way, but in the shitty can't enjoy anything way because they're too busy being miserable. And I get it, seasonal depression is a thing, but I've learned to cope and handle it.

[hacker]

Sounds tough. Especially around here. There's not exactly a strict schedule.

Mine, at least, is specific to the start and end of winter, so that's nice. [ not quite true since she starts feeling poorly in fall when the winter starts to creep in. it's only really a stark divide when it comes to winter turning to spring. ]

You know that's weirdly specific, right?

Uh, yup. Weirdly specific is my niche. How else would I be "not like other girls". [ the sarcasm is real. ] No, it's just a me specific aasimar thing, not a real seasonal depression thing, it's just easier to explain it away like that, y'know?

I always figured aasimars were weirdly resilient. [ Not that mental illness isn't depression, but bODY CHEMICALS OK ] But I guess they're just as susceptible to that stuff as anyone else.

[graveflowers]

[ she shrugs. ] Maybe it's other side of the veil shenans, 'cause I get that resilience thing. Being pregnant wasn't even a bother -- zero morning sickness, it was great.
