The "afterparty" is rumored to be the real main event of the night. A black-tie affair in the lavish, opulent ballroom, it is every new Knight's chance to mingle and meet some of their new brothers in arms. Of course, a couple hours are provided following the ceremony for everyone to change, do hair and makeup, and choose from the vast array of formal attire in the closets of the balcony "dressing rooms" located at the top of spiraled staircases on either side of the ballroom. A separate dressing room exists for men and women, and they include full bathrooms (with, thankfully, very modern plumbing).

The squires are usually among the last to arrive, and the ballroom is full to the brim with a fancy array of people, of all shapes, sizes and species.

Hope you aren't shy. They're all here to meet you.

Feel free to make your own open threads for people to come congratulate your newly pledged knight.

ooc; also if your Knight wants to get all gussied up, you can make a Disguise (Cha) check for how good they were at hair/makeup/stylin', etc! This goes for... any time.

[Myri has a little friend with her for this party, but it isn't her daughter. No, she left Shayla with one of her very capable babysitters so that she could make an appearance at the party- just her and Amaranth, the two of them together as they had been since the very start.

Wearing something light and flowing, Myri moves through the room, a faint smile on her face as she observes the festivities. Her familiar trails close behind, the large black flywacket sweeping his gaze to each face, tail twitching behind him and wings unfurling to prove his comfort in this company.

Myri pauses as she notices Re, keeping her distance, watching the others without engaging. Her head tilts a bit to one side, thinking back to several years prior when she was too timid to make a move from a spot on the wall. Taking cautious steps, Myri approaches with a gentle smile.]

It gets easier. [She says, her voice soft and light.] With time.

[ When she lifts her gaze to meet Myri's, it's with great reluctance that she even admits that there is something to get used to. She wants to stubbornly dig her heels in and act like she's fine. ]

Every time I think I've got the hang of it, there's more to come. This world couldn't be more different than where I came from.

[witchwoman]

[She understands, or she thinks she does- assuming that Rey comes from a place like her own world.]

It was the same for me. But now that I've been here, lived here, worked with this group for nearly four years? I can hardly remember any other life. But I know that it likely doesn't help with the way you feel now. For me, it felt impossible until it simply... didn't.

[ Myri's right: it feels unimaginable for Rey still. In truth, the real trouble is that she holds in her a flame of hope just like Poe does, that she'll be able to escape back to her galaxy and help recover it from the damage done by the First Order. But in her rational moments, and there are far more of those, she knows that to be impossible, and she only wishes she could be more at peace with life here, as it will be all she has left. ]

How long did it take?

It's hard to say. I was swept up in a mission soon after I was squired. That helped a great deal. It is easier to get used to this place when you have something to distract you.

It's not that I hope for a distraction, exactly, but ... I just wish I understood. There's so much, and I hardly know where to start.

[witchwoman]

You'll learn as you go. You'd be amazed how quickly you adapt- or at least, that's how it was for me. Tell me- do you know how to read? [Possibly an odd question, but she's just trying to get a base line.]

Some. But nothing like what I've seen here.

[ Because yes she has probably seen some text at some point since arriving here that's written in English and realized it's not like Aurebesh. ]

It's strange. Everyone seems to speak Basic, but the writing of it is so different than what I remember.

[ Admittedly, she wasn't much of a reader even ... when it was Aurebesh. ]

[She's never heard it referred to as Basic, before. Myri assumes that has something to do with the place Rey comes from. It's fascinating, really, the differences between such places.]

I couldn't read at all when I arrived. In my homeland, it was forbidden to learn, but one of the women here- Jeanne Gar, she helped me learn. I could teach you, if you wanted. Perhaps it would be a good place to start.

[ Stunned silent for a moment, Rey takes a beat before she leaps in with eager nodding. She won't miss the opportunity, but it's hard to imagine the kindness of this woman's offer and how time-consuming it is when they've only just met. ]

Please. Anything you can do to help, I'd be grateful. But ... why in the world would you have been forbidden from that?

[witchwoman]

Only the magicians at the University were permitted to learn. It was one of the oldest laws from the Stargods. [She had no reason to question it before. Here, she wonders just why the Stargods would ever keep such knowledge from their people. Perhaps one day she could ask them, if they ever graced her with their presence.]

I had little opportunity to learn anyway. I had no true home of my own before I came here, no family to speak of. Just Amaranth here. [Her winged familiar makes a strange chirping sort of noise like hi hello new friend.]

[forcevisions]

Hello there. [ Rey's nose crinkles with her smile as she leans in to tickle Amaranth's muzzle. The less human the better she is at socializing with it tbh. ] Me either. Not having a family, I mean. I don't even know who they were. I suppose now I never will.

[witchwoman]

[Amaranth leans into the touch, purring loudly which causes Myri to smile.]

He says you're very good at that. [Surprise telepathy with her familiar.] You'll find a lot of us here have that issue- not remembering who we were, where we came from, who might miss us back on the other side. But whether you realize it or not, by joining us, you've found a new family, of sorts.

[forcevisions]

I do realize it. [ Maybe not the Knighthood, but the Solo family. Even if they don't remember her, she can't help but look to them as family to her. The closest she has, anyway. This is maybe not what Maz Kanata meant about her sense of belonging, but here she is all the same. ]

[witchwoman]

Good. You're far and beyond where I was at the start. [She chuckles lightly, laughing at how skittish she had been when she first arrived here.]

I have no doubt that you'll adapt much quicker than you realize. And I'll be happy to help with that in any way I can.

[forcevisions]

I hope you're right. [ She nods. ] But I appreciate any help you can give, regardless. I hope I'll be able to repay it, one day.

[witchwoman]

I have no doubt you'll manage that with ease, in time. [Honestly, seeing a new squire get comfortable in the knighthood would be repayment enough.]

In the meantime, if you have any questions that you've thought of this far, I'm happy to answer them.

[forcevisions]

[ She knows what the answer probably is, but she can't help but ask it anyway. It would be irresponsible to pass up an opportunity. ]

... Is it true, what they say? That there's no way back through the Veil for anyone?

[witchwoman]

I've been here for a few years now, and I've never heard of anyone going back. Everything I've seen of this world tells me that nothing is impossible.

[forcevisions]

Just very unlikely. [ She shakes her head, as if that were exactly what she'd expected to hear. ]

[witchwoman]

Do you have something you want to return to on the other side? Or someone?

[forcevisions]

A friend of mine. I promised him that I would see him again when he recovered from a terrible injury. Were we here, he would have been well again before I left—I've seen what the Dragon's Light can do. But our medicine isn't so advanced.

[witchwoman]

I will pray to the Stargods that your friend might come through the Veil as well, then. If you find him, I would be happy to see to his injuries myself.

[forcevisions]

Thank you. [ There's distance in Rey's gratitude, like she's hoping that she's right and that Finn will make it long enough to have anyone see to those injuries in a meaningful way. ] I've heard that in this world, even if someone's injuries are too severe and take them, there's more to be done for them. Is it true?

[witchwoman]

It is. I've only performed such a spell once, but it was successful. We are sometimes able to bring someone back before they enter the void to move on to their next life.
