The "afterparty" is rumored to be the real main event of the night. A black-tie affair in the lavish, opulent ballroom, it is every new Knight's chance to mingle and meet some of their new brothers in arms. Of course, a couple hours are provided following the ceremony for everyone to change, do hair and makeup, and choose from the vast array of formal attire in the closets of the balcony "dressing rooms" located at the top of spiraled staircases on either side of the ballroom. A separate dressing room exists for men and women, and they include full bathrooms (with, thankfully, very modern plumbing).

The squires are usually among the last to arrive, and the ballroom is full to the brim with a fancy array of people, of all shapes, sizes and species.

Hope you aren't shy. They're all here to meet you.

Feel free to make your own open threads for people to come congratulate your newly pledged knight.

Those in power shoved the children of those not into caged death matches to keep them from uprising. So yeah, I'd say it was pretty bad.

[ Judging by the look on her face, Rey takes it upon herself to fully imagine it while she weighs the struggle. It doesn't sound unlike the kind of thing the First Order might do—except instead of pitting the children against one another, they're raising them into blindly loyal soldiers without families. ]

I'll take it as a good sign that you've chosen to throw your support behind the power that Wynn wields, then.

I had nowhere else to go.

[But she'd be lying if she said they hadn't treated her kindly. But she knows what happens on these missions, what they sometimes do. Deciding that she wants to do the same has been a complicated process, made more complicated by her own mental state.

She knows that she won't leave, though. Where would she go?]

I trust my mentor. And it's been four years and I haven't left yet, so I guess that says something.

Was your mentor one of the people you knew before you came here? [ She only asks because she feels like Jaina should have been. Solo. She feels foolish for not seeing it before she encountered Han. ]

No. He was the first person I talked to after I got here.

[When she was terrified and shooting at people in the middle of London.]

[ She nods. ]

Who is he?

Christos La Krail. He's one of the freelancer knights.

Who did they squire you to?

[Even if she....probably won't know them.]

Jaina Solo.

[ She's 👀 about whether or not Katniss knows her honestly. ]

[She shakes her head slightly.]

We haven't met. Do you like her?

I do. [ Rey nods. ] She seems focused, like she knows where her priorities lie. From what I've seen here, it's not necessarily true of every knight.

No, it's not.

As long as your priorities line up with hers, it should work.

Don't most people here have similar priorities, to help improve the situation for Shadowkind?

Well, sure, but if you think everyone goes about it in the same way, then think again.

How do you go about it? [ There's an earnestness in the way she asks it, like Katniss' opinion on the matter is the one she's most likely to value. ]

I remember that I'm no good to anyone if I'm dead. And that a lot of the time, getting out of there in one piece, and getting everyone else out too, is more important than the mission.

And when it comes down to a fight, which a lot of the times it does, it's going to come down to you or them, and you have to be prepared to pick yourself first.

Just because I'm doing the right thing, it doesn't always mean it's gonna look like that to everyone else.

Then how do you know it's the right thing?

I guess I don't, technically.

[She chews on the inside of her cheek.]

It feels like it is, though.

I think that's all any of us have.

[She just sort of nods.]

And for what it's worth, this place has helped me deal with a lot of stuff I don't think I could have done on my own.

[She seems to hesitate briefly, her eyes distant before they refocus on the girl in front of her only to fall toward the floor.

After I got here, I started having really bad nightmares. It turned out they were actually memories, and I didn't deal with them very well at first.

Memories from before the Veil? I didn't think those came back once they were lost. [ Rey has been lucky: as far as she can tell, she hasn't lost anything (though to be fair, she's not sure if the reason she can't recall her parents' faces is the fault of the Veil or not). ]

No. I must have...repressed them or something. That's what they tell me, anyway. They're not exactly happy.

[Like pretty much everything she's heard about her world, tbh.]

[ so she made herself forget them? yikes. that must be bad. rey doesn't push further. ]

I'm sorry they came back to you, then.

It's okay.

[She's not really great at accepting sympathy, but at least she seems to believe it's genuine and not just out of pity.]
