The "afterparty" is rumored to be the real main event of the night. A black-tie affair in the lavish, opulent ballroom, it is every new Knight's chance to mingle and meet some of their new brothers in arms. Of course, a couple hours are provided following the ceremony for everyone to change, do hair and makeup, and choose from the vast array of formal attire in the closets of the balcony "dressing rooms" located at the top of spiraled staircases on either side of the ballroom. A separate dressing room exists for men and women, and they include full bathrooms (with, thankfully, very modern plumbing).

The squires are usually among the last to arrive, and the ballroom is full to the brim with a fancy array of people, of all shapes, sizes and species.

Hope you aren't shy. They're all here to meet you.

[ She follows, ogling the selection. ]

Now I'm no stranger to food, but I think I'm a little overwhelmed by the number of choices here.

Personally, I always think that's an excuse to try one of everything.

Well, we've tried the shrimp. [ She looks along the buffet table, recognizing the easily recognizable stuff like small pieces of toasted bread, slices of cheese, and your basic fruits, but... ] What is that?

[ She's pointing at an odd-looking fruit that she's never seen before. ]

[A bright grin splits across Shawn's face as he lifts it up to show her.]

This? This is the most delicious of fruits. A lovely mix of sweetness and tang that tingles the palette and provides the most satisfactory fruit experience. It is called ... the pineapple.

The pine... apple. [ Definitely picturing a pine tree with these hanging off it now. So very skeptical. But she's nothing if not adventurous, so she takes a toothpick and skewers a piece to try. ]

Hm... This tastes like the drink. The piña colada.

[He grins.]

Precisely. Pina coladas are made from pineapples, plus rum and some other fun fruit flavors.

Alright. [ She eats another piece of pineapple. ] I like it. Where does this pine apple grow?

Places like Hawaii or the Bahamas. They like their climates warm and tropical.

[a beat.]

One day, I have a goal to own my own pineapple farm.

Really. [ Cue the most deadpan of expressions. ] You don't strike me as a farmer.

[ She ought to know... for some reason she can't seem to think of right now. ]

I am a man of many talents.

[Or so he likes to think.]

I've had fifty-three jobs in my short life. I believe in experiencing everything life has to offer.

Fifty-three, huh? Ever think maybe that says something else about you?

That I am a man of many talents? A jack of all trades, even?

That, or that you can't make up your mind.

[ chew on THAT while she pops another piece of pineapple in her mouth. ]

Harsh.

[There's a beat as he considers the pros and cons of that statement.]

But fair.

[ Gaz chuckles. ]

Well, at least you can admit it.

It's important for a man to know his flaws just as much as he knows his strengths.

[And while Shawn sees a lot of his flaws as strengths, he knows that not many people do.]

Is it now?

[ Spearing another bite of pineapple. ]

And what would you say the rest of your flaws are?

[He gives a small shrug as he considers:]

A bit of clumsiness. The inability to tame this fabulous hair into something more mundane to be one of the people.

[Shawn, those are not flaws.]

[ Not in Gaz's book, they're not. ]

And you want very much to be "one of the people?"

Well, of course. My father was one of them, so naturally I should be too.

[a beat.]

I think.

[ Gaz chuckles. ]

My father was a lot of things. Only some of which I aspire to be.

[He shrugs.]

I don't remember much about him. Veilnesia.

[Sometimes he wishes he could, but he's also not the type to whine over what he can't have unless it can be done in a dramatic fashion and doesn't actually matter in the long run.]

[ Gaz just hums. She doesn't remember many details about her family either. She remembers vague feelings about them, growing up safe and happy. At least she assumes she was happy.

She picks up another two pieces of pineapple and holds one out for him to take. ]

You know, you never told me your name.

[He takes the piece from her, before holding one up almost like a toast as he introduces himself.]

Shawn. Shawn Spencer.

[ She mirrors the toast, introducing herself before popping the fruit in her mouth. ]

Gaz. Gaz Kothari.
