The "afterparty" is rumored to be the real main event of the night. A black-tie affair in the lavish, opulent ballroom, it is every new Knight's chance to mingle and meet some of their new brothers in arms. Of course, a couple hours are provided following the ceremony for everyone to change, do hair and makeup, and choose from the vast array of formal attire in the closets of the balcony "dressing rooms" located at the top of spiraled staircases on either side of the ballroom. A separate dressing room exists for men and women, and they include full bathrooms (with, thankfully, very modern plumbing).

The squires are usually among the last to arrive, and the ballroom is full to the brim with a fancy array of people, of all shapes, sizes and species.

Hope you aren't shy. They're all here to meet you.

Feel free to make your own open threads for people to come congratulate your newly pledged knight.

ooc; also if your Knight wants to get all gussied up, you can make a Disguise (Cha) check for how good they were at hair/makeup/stylin', etc! This goes for... any time.

He gives a small shrug. "Depends on the purpose. Or the moment. Pranks can be fun, but if you don't really know the person well then it can blow up in your face. Trust me, I've been on the wrong side of that and it just does not go well."

"This is why you spend time getting to know the other person as a friend and then you prank them." Or you just get even with your little shit of a brother. "One of my friends would love to hear about some of your pranks if he were here. Varric is a storyteller."

"Oooh, is he one of those bardic ones, that sing songs and tales of glory?" Shawn seems to perk up visibly at that. "I always did think my adventures are totally ballad worthy material, but no one here seems to want to sing my praises."

[hawkeing]

...Hold on. Hold that thought, Hawke has to laugh at the idea of Varric being a bard. No really. That's hilarious.

"He's an author, wrote a very popular series. Several, actually. But he doesn't sing. If he were here, I'm sure he would find a nice book to immortalize you in."

Shawn considers for a moment, before nodding his agreement. "That is an acceptable substitute. I just always thought that my life was best immortalized in song." He even had the idea for a musical once.

[hawkeing]

"Well, if I find a bard, I'll ask," Hawke promises. "But now that you've said all this, I have to ask what stories you want immortalized. I like hearing stories, songs or otherwise." Either that or she's just in the mood to troll.

And Shawn takes a deep breath as he considers. "Well, I haven't been on an official case as of yet, but I did solve a lot of murders back home. Almost one a week. Santa Barbara is the murder capital of the world."

No, it's not Shawn. You just solve a lot of crime.

[hawkeing]

Murders. Why is it always murders? Familiarity dawns on Hawke's face. "Ah. Murders. Now you're beginning to sound like me." Except she wasn't officially trained to solve murders. Usually, they just fell into her lap or people brought them to her because she was the only person in the whole damn place who even looked into them.

Because people are wild, dangerous animals. Or something like that. He nods in agreement, before tipping his head to the side. "You run into a lot of dead bodies where you're from?"

[hawkeing]

"I'm from Thedas," Hawke answers, like this says everything she needs to say. "Dead bodies make up about half the population."

Which is actually a hilarious pun if Shawn knew anything about a) what happened to her mother, b) about the Blights and demons, c) necromancy in Thedas, or d) what happened to the poor people in Crestwood.

Yeah Shawn knows exactly zero about Thedas, so he's just going to take her word for it that it's a very large exaggeration. But he's not unfamiliar with exaggerations because he uses them fairly often himself.

"Then I'm glad you're here, the land of monsters but considerably less zombies."

[hawkeing]

"Anything has to be better," she jokes. "Except giant spiders. I've had enough of those."

Seriously. Thedas had dead bodies and giant spiders in abundance. Hawke is so over both.

He wrinkles his nose at that. "Yech. The spiders are a bit overkill, don't you think?"

[hawkeing]

"Always," she says vehemently. "I went from Thedas, where giant spiders seem to be the most common thing aside from demons and mage-haters, to a place called Australia."

Yeah. That had gone well.

He cringes in response before shaking his head. "That must have sucked. Though then again, I probably shouldn't talk, because who knows what I might run into on my missions."

[hawkeing]

"Shall I pray to the Maker for your soul?" she jokes. "You might have better luck than I do."

He laughs. "Nah, I think I'll survive. I'm a pretty tough cookie. Not that cookies should be tough - I tend to prefer the soft-baked chewy kind."

[hawkeing]

"Most everything is better chewy," Hawke agrees with a laugh. "Wouldn't want to break your teeth on something like an overeager dog."

It's a good thing her dog isn't here or she has a feeling he'd be whining right about now.

"Although, I wouldn't want chewy bread. That usually comes with the furry friends."

Shawn makes a face before nodding in agreement. "Yeah - bread is definitely better before it gets to the chewy phase. And I would also disagree that chips are no better chewy - I prefer them crisp and crunchy."

[hawkeing]

"You may have to introduce me to those properly," Hawke observes. "Are they the kind of food that bites back when it's been left to sit?"

Shawn considers for a moment, before shaking his head. "Where I'm from? Normally, no. But this world is a little weird, so I can't really answer that for certain."

[hawkeing]

"That sounds like something I may have to find out for myself." Or she'll just find someone else to find out. Either way. "You've given me a lot to think about. I suppose I should thank you."

It's a roundabout thanks but that counts, right?

It's definitely close enough for Shawn. "I am happy to help," he grins, before taking a step back. "Anyway, I should let you get back to all this, but if you have any other questions, feel free to find me."

Shawn is always happy to answer questions. How accurately is ... always the question, though.

[hawkeing]

"Oh, I don't know, this party is better than most," she jokes. "No one's been stabbed yet."

Is she really joking or serious? The world may never know.

"All right. I just might." He's been entertaining and she likes him. That's a plus. Grinning, she turns her attention back to the crowd and waits to find someone else to bother or be bothered by.
