It's been a week since Sir Jeanne Gar was abducted by agents of the Church of the Lord's Humanity, despite the Knights' efforts to thwart the attempt.  Several of the younger Knights learned a harsh lesson as they watched the Mind Master shake even the seasoned Sir Hasmed, and turn some of their number on each other.   While Wynn has announced that they are determined to find a way to save Gar, it''s certainly obvious why he's hesitant to send agents out, after what the Mind Master alone has done to several Knights, including Finnick Odair, who may never be the same.  

A dark cloud hangs over the Knighthood, either way, dampening any enthusiasm won from their victory in finally taking down Dimitris Sarandis and two other notable members of the Shadow-hating Church led by Draken Crombe.

The sun is still up in the late evening, on this day, but there's a heaviness in the air.

[Myri sets Shayla down in the playpen with Lucia, shaking her head, as if she might be able to free herself of the terrible ways she can see this ending.]

There are too many ways for this to go wrong. They've done this on their terms, surprised us and left us scrambling to come up with a plan. Sir Solace, I beg you to consider remaining apart from this meeting. Should anything go wrong, we do not want them to take control of our most capable healer.

I don't think it has to be Solace, even though you're totally my fave, but I don't think all the section heads should be there. The United States Cabinet has a designated survivor, a person who stays home when they have huge meetings and stuff just in case if there is a giant bombing or whatever, someone's left to rule the country. I'm just saying ... we might need a designated survivor. Just in case.

The only section heads currently in the building are myself and Sir Hasmed. [ the words are quiet, as he shoots an apologetic look at myri ] There will be others, should it come to such a thing.

Do you know where they are? [ She's listened for a moment, letting the gears turn. ] Does Wynn, or Sir Hasmed? Because if any of you do and you walk into that room, with her, then the leadership of this organization is doomed. [ She looks up, folding her arms over her chest. ] I wanna have faith in our ability to foil the Mind Master, but... someone recently accused me of being too much of an optimist.

[ vi isn't sure that matters much anymore considering the mind master proved once again she can stroll in univited. if she can find the castle, she can just wait them out. that said, ] She's got a point. That's exactly how she found Lazarus. [ aside from vi leading her right to him. she shakes her head and looks to myri. ]

I'll look after the girls. [ fuck if she's going anywhere near the mind master again. but myri has spells to protect herself and others around her, if she wants to go with solace and anastacia, vi wants to make sure she won't be worrying about her daughter the whole time. ]

I'll stay with them as well. [ babies are priorities though ]

[Myri takes Vi's hand, squeezing it gently and nodding. Vi and Ana watching the girls will make her feel much better. She's not sure if she can really do much, but she can't deny that she does want to be there, just in case.]

I'll have my phone on me. If anything happens... [like idk...dinosaurs...]

[astrid looks at myri like she's going?? she gets to go??? and not stay with the babies?? fuck this shit.]

Myri arrives, looking weary, but not at all injured.]

They came to offer a trade. [She says, her voice sounding hollow, defeated.] A promise to return Gar, but only if Rafael went with them.

[ sometime while this whole thing was happening, vi sat down on one of the beds and gathered both babies in her lap to tell them a story and now lucia is sleeping draped over her leg and shay is slumped against her shoulder, trying to keep herself awake with that baby perseverance. ]

A trade, [ she echoes, soft voice oddly resigned. she doesn't ask the outcome because she's not stupid. (wis 20 total) ] Why did they want Raf?

He mentioned some event. An... an auction. I'm not entirely sure. But there was also some sort of invitation for Stargods only know what. Wynn has it. It involves us, I think. [Failboat, that is.]

Felicity was able to slip her phone into Rafael's pocket as they left. Some of the others are working to do something with that. Buffy went to work on a plan- with Tia, I believe.

[ her head dips in a slow nod, eyebrows knitting together as she tries to reconcile all this. she's glad buffy is talking to tia, for a variety of reasons. ]

...an auction. [ it feels like her heart is pounding in her ears. that was... selfishly, the first thing that crosses her mind is how this will impact her, but at least it's pushed aside quickly with sorrow for buffy. ] I'm starting to think none of us are meant to fall in love.

Believe me, it was one of my first thoughts as well. [Cursed are the men who dare to fall for a failboat woman tbh]

It's not fair. [ it's weak and frustrated, but really what else is there to say? ]

It isn't. But we'll get him back. We have to. [One of them has to win. It wasn't Vi or Myri, but one of them has to come out of this with a lovelife intact.]

We have to, [ vi agrees, hugging shayla close, siphoning her comfort from the daughters of the men they'd already lost. she nods her head to the empty spot next to her for myri. if they're going to weather this particular storm, they're going to weather it together. ]

What else happened?

[Myri follows that suggestion, moving to the spot beside Vi and cuddling up with her and the girls.]

Crombe wants to close the Veil. For good. Which isn't all that surprising, but...

[It was still shocking to hear.]

[ she isn't surprised by the desire either, but she is surprised by the fact that isn't possible? ]

Um, since when is that even possible? And why is creepy psion Mind Master on his team if he wants to shut down the source of her powers?

I don't know if it's possible. But that's why he took Gar, to try to get her to help him find out how to do it. As for the Mind Master... I have no idea. Perhaps she thinks she could find a way to keep her powers. Or maybe she believes as Crombe does and looks forward to being without her abilities.

Maybe, she just doesn't seem like the type of person to want to part with them. [ but vi brushes it aside as unimportant. what's important is that if the veil closed it would affect the people she loves in ways she can't even imagine. vi can live without her gifts, she can still garden without her mother's favor behind it, she can fall back on herbs and poultices instead of healing magic, but myri?

the thought of myri without magic is just wrong. ]

I didn't realize that Gar was that focused on the veil. Which makes me seem like such a shitty friend.

A lot of the things she used to have me practice reading had to do with Veil studies. It wasn't her only interest, but it did seem to be a specialty of hers.

[She's quiet for a moment.]

Crombe says that Wynn wants to tear the Veil open, to keep it open forever. And I cannot help but wonder if that is any better than closing it for good. Tampering with that sort of thing seems...

Like a horrible idea, yeah, but I can imagine why Wynn would want to. There's probably a reason that Sehanine is the one who sort of controls the Veil, this is power best wielded by Gods.

It's frustrating because Crombe is right in that the Veil does bring unspeakable horrors, but... this world gave birth to his hatred. And Sarandis'. They found an outlet for it in the shadowkind, yes, but that sort of evil would have found a different target if the Veil never opened here. It isn't the cause of every problem. But to say so only seems that I am thinking of my own existence here.
