It's been a week since Sir Jeanne Gar was abducted by agents of the Church of the Lord's Humanity, despite the Knights' efforts to thwart the attempt.  Several of the younger Knights learned a harsh lesson as they watched the Mind Master shake even the seasoned Sir Hasmed, and turn some of their number on each other.   While Wynn has announced that they are determined to find a way to save Gar, it''s certainly obvious why he's hesitant to send agents out, after what the Mind Master alone has done to several Knights, including Finnick Odair, who may never be the same.  

A dark cloud hangs over the Knighthood, either way, dampening any enthusiasm won from their victory in finally taking down Dimitris Sarandis and two other notable members of the Shadow-hating Church led by Draken Crombe.

The sun is still up in the late evening, on this day, but there's a heaviness in the air.

[Cora's eyebrows go up in surprise, because it's not often that Derek sought her out. She weighs the pros and cons for a moment, before responding.]

It's open.

[grumpypuppy]

[Derek will slip in, closing the door behind him.]

I'm not interrupting anything, am I?

[he was very cautious around her, not wanting to upset or hurt her again. she was the only one who got that kind of courtesy from him.]

[Bernie's head picks up from the bed and gives him a Look - maybe he'll roll better this time on his handle animal - but Cora just shrugs, reaching over to stroke his back gently.]

No, not really. What's up?

[grumpypuppy]

[let's see how Bernie likes him now with a Handle Animal 12 as Derek approached the bed]

What do you know of a woman named the Mind Master and a man named Draken?

[impetere]

[Well, it's better than last time. Bernie sniffs at his hand and he's still not in love with Derek, but he can live with his presence. Her brow furrows for a moment as she tries to wrack her brain a bit (wisdom 8).]

The first one is familiar, but the second isn't. I think the Mind Master was here during the castle attack. Why?

[grumpypuppy]

They showed up at the front desk today just before I was due to start my shift. It wasn't good.

[impetere]

What'd they say? Is everyone okay?

[grumpypuppy]

They were the one who took Sir Gar. And they came to take Buffy's boyfriend and said they would let Gar go in return.

[impetere]

[She purses her lips together.]

They're friends with Sarandis. I wouldn't exactly say they're trustworthy.

[grumpypuppy]

They brought up the veil, and how they want to close it once and for all. About how it hurts people bringing them here, wiping away pieces of them in the process...

[he's struggling with his feelings in that]

[Her eyes widen a bit at that, because yeah - while she has her issues with the Veil too, there's one thing that she really doesn't want to find out is true or not.]

I've heard that if the Veil closes, we stop being werewolves.

[grumpypuppy]

How's that possible? We were born that way, not something the Veil did to us.

[impetere]

[She shrugs.]

Here being a werewolf is tied to magic. I don't know how it all works, exactly, but I haven't met a werewolf who's been through the Veil closing yet.

[grumpypuppy]

[Derek just nodded, then looked at Cora]

Did you know Wynn is trying to do something to the Veil?

[impetere]

[That also catches her by surprise, and she looks up at him with a frown.]

What do you mean?

[grumpypuppy]

From what the man said, Sir Gar has the knowledge on how to shut the Veil. That's why Wynn recruited her, so that he could tear a hole permanently in it. That it would destroy it.

And Cora... he didn't deny it.

[impetere]

[Her lips purse a bit at that because Wynn could have any number of reasons for wanting to keep the Veil open. The Veil closing permanently is just as bad in her opinion, but it doesn't exactly give her warm fuzzy feelings that Wynn had left them without an explanation.]

Should he have?

[grumpypuppy]

I don't know. I mean, he does do a lot of good in the world, helping those like us. But how do we know he's not the one responsible for why we were brought here in the first place?

[impetere]

[She's quick to shake her head no on that.]

If he had that much control over it, why would he have to rip a hole in it?

[grumpypuppy]

Depends on what that would cause, as opposed to closing it.

[impetere]

I don't know. I don't know enough about the Veil either way.

[She makes a face.]

I don't think he's responsible for the Veil, though.

[grumpypuppy]

[he's silent a moment]

Do you think it would be worth giving up our powers to keep anyone else from being pulled here like we were? Like all the others. Losing parts of themselves and being unable to ever return?

[impetere]

[Cora wants to be selfish and say no, that protecting other people isn't worth sacrificing her own identity in the process. She doesn't want to be human. She never wanted to be human. She wouldn't even know what to do with it.]

I don't think it's our decision to make.

[Which is a cop out but it's true. That decision belongs to whoever truly controls the Veil and what they think is best.]

I think either way, there will be consequences we may not be able to predict.

[grumpypuppy]

Maybe. But I just... I can't shake the feeling that we would help more preventing these monsters coming into this world, and only having to handle the problems that exist here.

[impetere]

[She makes a face before shaking her head.]

That's the problem. Most of the monsters are from this world. Sarandis wasn't Shadowkind - he just exploited them.
