The Knights fly into the port city of Cape Town in the height of summer, which luckily for them is actually a comfortable Mediterranean climate. They have come in search of Le Chien de l’Onyx to return it to it's former (and rightful) owner, the elf mage Nieulor -- it had been stolen from him in eighteenth century France and once Nieulor was freed from the Bastille, he had tracked its whereabouts across the globe trying to retrieve it. Finally, he has found it in Cape Town and the Knights have been asked to meet him for further information at the Blanched Escargot, a hole in the wall French restaurant on the waterfront.

[ he chugs it down, as they notice some bruising on his cheek. he speaks in english, but with a french accent, and sounds disoriented.

"I've lost track of how many days I have been here." ]

Well, hopefully we'll be able to get you out of here ASAP.

[He probably remembers the way out. Probably.]

Do you think you can walk? We probably should get out of here before any friends of his show up.

[bloodrager]

[ the man nods, and indra goes to prop him up with her strong arms yo, looking to shawn ] Let's get him out of here.

[And Shawn will nod before using his photographic memory to try and navigate them out of the tunnels and into the world above (navigate 21).]

[bloodrager]

[ they are partway up when he stops them.

"Wait... wait, my briefcase! It is very important that we recover my briefcase. Please." ]

[pwnspatrickjane]

[A briefcase. Cool. Got it.]

Where did you see it last?

[bloodrager]

[ "They took it from me... It can't have been too far. I thought I heard them locking it up in the next room."

indra looks to shawn with a questioning expression. ] Maybe we should send him with the cleric and go back.

[pwnspatrickjane]

[He nods in agreement before turning back to Taradiddle and relaying the way back up to the surface as much as he can (wisdom 13). Then he'll glance to Thea.]

Team Briefcase or Team Great Escape?

Team Briefcase, duh.

[ as if there was any other choice. ]

Awesome. Then let's do this.

[And off they go to go looking for a briefcase (search 14).]

[bloodrager]

[ heading back through, they find a room where there is a chain-locked cage with a pile of things inside, a shiny metal briefcase on top of the pile ]

That must be it. How do we get it out?

Pick the lock?

[He knows how to do it but he might not necessarily be good at it, so he'll glance to Thea to see if that's in her wheelhouse before he gives it a shot.]

[ thea shrugs. not her wheelhouse. ]

If that fails we could just take the whole thing.

[pwnspatrickjane]

[He gives a small shrug, before stepping forward and giving picking the lock a shot, in all his untrained glory (disable device 6). He's not very good at it.]

[bloodrager]

We don't have time for this. [ she gestures for him to move aside and BAM, brings her weapon down solidly on the lock, which falls off ] Let's take it and go.

[pwnspatrickjane]

[Shawn blinks for a moment and nods as he reaches forward to grab the briefcase.]

Works for me.

Let's go then.

[ off they trot the way they came? ]

[bloodrager]

[ out they go, to meet up with taradiddle and the guy they've rescued at a nearby quiet location. he immediately looks relieved at seeing the briefcase, and seems to have been healed up pretty well.

"May I?" he asks, and looks to shawn for the briefcase ]

[And Shawn will hand it over without comment, but still dramatically, stretching it out in front of him and bowing his head a bit, as though to go "my liege."]

[bloodrager]

[ they gather around a bit as the man takes the briefcase and places it on a table, putting in a combination and then unlatching the locks. there's a click as he opens the lid. the interior is almost entirely foam padding - there are only two items held securely in place by all that padding. one is a sealed letter and the other is an old slim book, whose title is in french. he looks up at them. ]

Do any of you speak French?

I do. I was in Brussels for two years, that immersion learning really works.

[ he nods and holds it up so she can read the title: Le Chien
de l’Onyx—Sa Fonction et Son Origine Mystérieuses.

indra glances to thea for a translation ]

The Onyx Dog, uh, its mysterious function and origin. [ a beat. ] It's not a real dog, is it?

[bloodrager]

[ he shakes his head, opening to an illustration of a stone fetish shaped like a dog.

"The book was written by Duc de Rouen, a survivor of the French revolution, and printed in 1802 in Paris. It describes the Onyx Dog, seized from a man-creature who called himself Nieulor, who disappeared from the Bastille in 1789. The final chapters, however, discuss the object’s magical properties: that it in fact can turn into a real dog."

he snaps the book shut and fixes them with a steely eye. "I am this same Nieulor. I came here to recover my property - this Onyx Dog. It seems I may be in need of some assistance, and I would be willing to pay for your aid." ]

[ thea brushes off the offer of payment. ]

Wynn sent us. [ a beat. ] We'll help you get back Sirius.

[ names the dog for him, it's fine. ]
