Killian sad sailor friend has long fled, assuming his wife is long dead, but the Knights have come to find out the truth and discover what exactly the skum are doing with these villagers and stop it. Because it is definitely horrifying.

no seriously, this reminds hawke so forcefully of isabela that she's actually homesick. not that she's ever really sailed, but it's the idea. and isabela had always been fun to be around. so hawke can't say she doesn't miss her now.

another thing she'll have to tell ashe when she gets back.

as it is, when she's not helping sail to the best of her ability, she's leaning against the railing and letting the ocean breeze blow her short hair around. she misses home, wherever home is now. not here, not really. she misses a bunch of things and people she can't remember.

[ well, faith will strike up a conversation at least, watching hawke staring out from her own precarious perch on the rail ] Whatcha thinkin' about?

How much I wish the pirate queen I knew in Thedas would turn up for this. Sailing. She'd be so jealous. Probably give me an earful for leaving her out of it.

[ pause as she glances at their "captain." ]

Then again, she might try to mutiny and overtake the ship for her own, so it might be better that she isn't here yet.

You knew a pirate queen? [ her eyes light up at the words ] Talk about hashtag-goals.

Well, she'd like to think she was. [ she remembers barely anything about isabela, but that definitely rings true. ] Hashtag?

Yeah, it's how you categorize stuff on social media, so people can find it better or whatever. I mean, really, they're mostly for fun.

[hawkeing]

See, I'm still trying to understand this social media thing. We don't have much of anything like it except Chantry boards or vandalism or whatever signs or notes you leave around. Letters? But those don't get seen by many people.

[ forgive her for still trying to understand the media part, too. ]

Oh right. Shadow World. Well, I mean, it's more like magic, I suppose. You had magic, right?

[hawkeing]

I think that may be the first time someone's asked a mage if they had magic. [ forgive her, faith. this is amusing to her. ] Then again, I was an apostate, so most people probably assumed I didn't until Kirkwall.

Oh Maker, [ she sighs dramatically. she keeps forgetting that she has to explain all of this to everyone here. ] Mages in Thedas are usually... feared and for a long time in most places any known mage was taken to live in a Circle with other mages. If you hid your magic and lived as normal a life as possible, you were an apostate. An illegal mage.

[ that's the short of it anyway. ]

Then again, the Circles all fell recently, so technically we're all apostates now.

Wait. Who ran these Circles or whatever?

A knight-commander and their band of merry templars, who are leashed to the chantry.

[ which probably makes no sense, either. she rubs at her forehead for a second. ]

Religious centers, I think they might be called here. Templars served the chantry by keeping mages in line. I hear some Circles actually had freedom, but most were prisons. The one in Kirkwall was... one of the worst by the time it fell. Its location was in the Gallows, the prison tower from when Kirkwall was the height of the slave trade in the old Imperium. I'm sure you don't need me to spell out how bad it was.

Ever been sailing before, lass? [The Jolly Roger can more or less sail herself when she gets going, so Killian doesn't mind wandering around to check on his crew. Good to get to know the people he's working with, after all.]

[hawkeing]

[ hawke glances at the captain of the merry vessel, interested in spite of herself. ]

Not before now, no, but I did once know someone who wouldn't stop talking about getting a ship of her own again. She'd probably mutiny for this one if she were here.

[ okay so hawke could probably rein her in if necessary. maybe. it is isabela. ]

I've faced a mutiny or two before. Never ends well. It's fortunate for your friend she's not here to try.

[hawkeing]

[ she can see the distaste and smirks as she turns back to enjoy the breeze. ]

Don't worry. She'd listen to my logical explanation of why she shouldn't.

[ namely the fact that they're actually friends rather than rivals or sort of friends or anything else. ]

So, got anything to teach someone who's completely new?

[Yeah, logical arguments definitely always work on pirates.]

Your friend never taught you anything? I suppose I could offer up some pointers. The Jolly Roger's not exactly like other ships.

[hawkeing]

[ "logical," like don't do that, we're friends with the guard captain and she wouldn't want to have to throw you in prison. even if you two have a very tentative friendship. ]

We didn't exactly have a lot of choice. We were all sort of stuck. In a large city. Without a boat. Hers got shipwrecked. She was very disappointed.

And she never stole another? [A beat.] I mean… purchased.

[He didn't mean purchased.]

[hawkeing]

[ oh she knows exactly what he meant and she's not about to say anything. she knows how this goes and really? after everything she's been accomplice to, she has no room to talk. ]

She was stranded and you don't want one of those dingy little things one of the Kirkwall sailors dreamed out of his ass. You want a real ship and that's impossible to find in Kirkwall.

[ there were... other circumstances, too, but hawke has no real idea what those actually... were... ]

[A sorry excuse for a ship will still get you out of being stranded, and can let you go somewhere with better ships. The logic seems shaky for Hook. But he doesn't argue. He doesn't know the lass in question, and perhaps she had other reasons for sticking around.]

She wouldn't have found the likes of my ship anyway. The Jolly Roger's made of enchanted wood.

[ there's more to it, of course, but all hawke remembers is the end of the whole thing and the fight with the arishok. sadly. so she may or may not be bullshitting her way through. who knows. ]

Enchanted wood? Is it magic? Does it charm and confuse everyone who tries to steal it?

No, I do that well enough on my own. [He flashes her a smile (diplomacy 37).] Mostly it makes her faster and allows her to travel between worlds, given a proper portal.

[hawkeing]

So I see that. [ she is oddly charmed (will save 24)! ] 'Between worlds?' I don't suppose that has any special significance?
