They're calling it one of the trials of the year.  Some of the more hyperbolic tabloids have referred to it as the "trial of the decade" or even "of the new century".

Audrey Petersen, wealthy socialite and wife of Professor Grant Petersen, curator of the Knights' archives has been involved in an extended proceeding ever since the day that the Knights and the London police stopped Nicholas St. Andrew, a charismatic cult leader, from completing a dark occult ritual.  St. Andrew was killed in the assault, but Audrey was taken prisoner, her role in the business less black and white. She now stands trial for the crimes she allegedly committed with her former mentor.  The authorities are still uncertain as to whether Audrey was a willing accomplice or just another of St. Andrew's brainwashed cultist lackeys.  Her lawyers and the popular press have taken to painting her as a victim, but Wynn is hardly so sure.  Dozens of people, including prominent citizens have said they are willing to appear as character witnesses for her, and some have even been obliquely criticizing the work the authorities did in arresting her.  Many of the Knights who were involved in thwarting the Children of Chaos have been asked to come to the trial to provide more insight into the situation.  

Police chief Jared O'Keefe paces nervously outside the doors as they arrive, rubbing his mouth with one hand.  

"Oh good.  You made it.  Now, we've insisted on no cameras anywhere nearby - we want to preserve the sanctity of the Knights' secrecy as much as possible.  The attorneys have a ... bit of a history.  They've sparred in the courtroom many a time.  I believe the plan is to call you up on the stand in small groups."

prosecution question 1

[ mcgregory paces in front of the stand, looking the three over, his gaze lingering a bit on grant, before he passes them and asks:

"When was the first time you met the defendant?" ]

[bittersweeter]

We were never introduced, as it happens, but the first time I encountered her was during the hostage situation in her home.

[ "And what was your impression of her?" ]

[bittersweeter]

She seemed panicked at first, but the longer we spent with her the more she didn't seem affected by the events.

She wanted to leave even though her husband and friends were still hostage.

[ grant keeps a poker face over here, but so does audrey.

"She espoused no concern for any of the others? Did she understand they were still in danger?" ]

I first met my wife when we were undergraduates. We did our masters studies together, and were married the summer before we planned to begin work on our PHDs.

My wife and I were having guests over a dinner party, when a group of armed men broke in, waving guns. Audrey and I were separated - I was with the rest of the guests, and she was taken by the leader, Peter Jayson. These two were part of the team who defeated the guards and freed us, reuniting me with my wife. She was feeling faint, so I brought her down to the medics while they took care of the rest. She had chest pains, and they talked about readying an ambulance because of her heart, when she---

She claimed she had brought pills along, although I'd never heard of her needing heart pills. Instead, she seemed to drink a potion of what had to be gaseous form. Before she did, she... said she had hoped things didn't have to turn out this way.

[ "Who do you believe stole the idols from the Petersen penthouse that night?" ]

[bittersweeter]

Audrey Peterson stole the idols during the hostage situation when she had herself separated from the others. At that time the rest of the guests were locked in the penthouse safe room, allowing Mrs Peterson ample time to herself to fetch the idols for Nicholas St. Andrew.

I'm forced to admit that my wife was perhaps in a situation to do exactly that. But I can't be sure of that.

"Did you see the defendant remove any valuable items from the Petersen penthouse on the night of the hostage crisis?" ]

Not personally, no.

[ "And yet you stated to the prosecuting attorney in no uncertain terms that she took them." ]

That's correct.

[ "How can you be sure, then?" ]

[antiquaria]

I did not, no.

[ "Weren't you among the people who removed the defendant from the penthouse that night?" ]

[bittersweeter]

Yes, I was. Once outside, I watched the defendant take a potion and flee the scene rather than face police questioning.

[ "How can you be certain that this was her intent? Did she say as much?" ]

[bittersweeter]

She apologized to her husband and took a potion, that she claimed was prescription pills, which caused her to vanish into a cloud of vapor. Her intent was to run away and she did.

[ "When you arrived at the penthouse, wasn't Mrs. Petersen tied to a chair with a gun pointed at her head?" ]

[bittersweeter]

Yes. And she was strangely calm and at ease for someone with a gun trained on her. Due to her alliance with Nicholas St. Andrew, she wasn't personally in any danger at all. Unlike the friends she dragged into her hostage situation.
