They're calling it one of the trials of the year.  Some of the more hyperbolic tabloids have referred to it as the "trial of the decade" or even "of the new century".

Audrey Petersen, wealthy socialite and wife of Professor Grant Petersen, curator of the Knights' archives has been involved in an extended proceeding ever since the day that the Knights and the London police stopped Nicholas St. Andrew, a charismatic cult leader, from completing a dark occult ritual.  St. Andrew was killed in the assault, but Audrey was taken prisoner, her role in the business less black and white. She now stands trial for the crimes she allegedly committed with her former mentor.  The authorities are still uncertain as to whether Audrey was a willing accomplice or just another of St. Andrew's brainwashed cultist lackeys.  Her lawyers and the popular press have taken to painting her as a victim, but Wynn is hardly so sure.  Dozens of people, including prominent citizens have said they are willing to appear as character witnesses for her, and some have even been obliquely criticizing the work the authorities did in arresting her.  Many of the Knights who were involved in thwarting the Children of Chaos have been asked to come to the trial to provide more insight into the situation.

Police chief Jared O'Keefe paces nervously outside the doors as they arrive, rubbing his mouth with one hand.

"Oh good.  You made it.  Now, we've insisted on no cameras anywhere nearby - we want to preserve the sanctity of the Knights' secrecy as much as possible.  The attorneys have a ... bit of a history.  They've sparred in the courtroom many a time.  I believe the plan is to call you up on the stand in small groups."

[ "Can you describe the events at the Sweet Tooth candy factory and what they revealed about the goals of Nicholas St. Andrew?" ]

Nicholas St. Andrew used the Children of Chaos, a cult that worships exactly what it sounds like, to use an idol of Barric the Glutton to create candy golems and murder people. It's really that simple. The way I understand it, he wanted to use the murders to help fuel his crazy dream of becoming a god.

When we got there, most of the factory had been cleared out by the police officers who were attacked. We found our way inside, and we found out that the machinery there had been combined a dangerous idol to create something that was going to be used somewhere in the city.

What we knew about the idol meant it couldn't be anything good.

After the idol was used, we tracked down the cult members of the Children of Chaos to a local Halloween fair, where a number of golems created by the cultists began menacing the populace. Their aim seemed less to harm than to simply create a sense of chaos - something firmly in line with their brand. The cultists themselves, however, resorted to violence quickly when they saw that we were attempting to control the situation.

immuno: (all you want is love)

[personal profile] immuno 2017-06-20 12:09 am (UTC)(link)
The idol of Barric the Glutton was one of the items stolen, which means Audrey Petersen must have acquired it for St. Andrew.

[ "So these idols were in fact intrinsic to his plans, and were central to the attack that took place at the Halloween parade? Thus making Audrey Petersen an accomplice to those crimes, as well as the robbery." ]

I think it's impossible to deny that there is a link between the theft of the items and their use in not one, but two situations that were related directly to the Children of Chaos. If Audrey Petersen stole those items willingly for Nicholas St. Andrew, then she holds some responsibility for what followed.

No, it would have been foolish for her to make a direct appearance there if she was trying to maintain an air of innocence. Likewise, if the Cult's goals were to incite chaos, even St. Andrew must have known it was likely they would be captured. If Audrey Petersen knew something about his end goals, he probably wouldn't have wanted to risk her revealing anything under interrogation.

[She pauses for a moment, before extending one hand above her head to indicate height.]

It was maybe fifteen feet tall and made of candy.

[She got her claws stuck in it, this she remembers clearly.]
