The acting Heads of the Knighthood - Hasmed and Solace - have made a decision that is not easy for many. Given the terrible state of everything happening in America, they've decided to relocate operations entirely to the States, and have secured a facility near Las Vegas. It is certainly possible, with the grim missions that lie before them, that many, or all, of the Knights may never return. Reactions to the announcement are certain to be strong, but it's time to choose what they will bring with them to their new life - and for some, to decide if it's a journey they can bring themselves to take.

It means SHIELD is allying with the Knighthood to address the situation in L.A.

[ As she sees it, SHIELD will be presumably taking the lead — after all, the Knighthood has no leadership. But she's sure that's a fight that's going to come down eventually. ]

We're moving out to a SHIELD base for future operations. Soon.

[ She looks just a little satisfied with herself. ]

You never told me about SHIELD.

[ plain. flat. as dry as the desert. he moves to take a seat on the couch, deciding this is going to end up being a whole Conversation. ]

[ She'd been coming off the high of 'yeah, Sam Winchester got this.' She hadn't properly factored in that Sam Winchester hadn't been the one on the mission who'd 'rescued' her from the Mexican government. She frowns, stepping further into the apartment.

Skye stays standing. ]

I never told anyone about SHIELD. I couldn't; I was on assignment. The Director wanted me to evaluate the methods and values of the Knighthood, feel them out as potential allies. This is a good thing, Alex. We can work together.

[ when you spend so much time conning and duping people and then you must sit there and realize ... u were the mark. you were boo boo the fool. when everything you knew about someone ??may or may not be true???

So you were, what, a double agent? The whole time?

[ it's not the same vaguely annoyed tone he's been staying in the range of. the question is something more removed and analytical-sounding than that. there's risk assessment running in the background of his head. ]

SHIELD planted me in the base in Guadalajara. We gave you Peter's ship to find out what you'd do with it.

[ 'You' doesn't really feel accurate -- no, he'd left the Knighthood. This isn't about loyalty to them. It's about Alex himself, and his friendship with Skye. That ... hurts. It's hard to confront. But it at least sobers her up considerably. She's not longer trying to justify with tactics. ]

It wasn't personal.

[ She hates to hear Ward's words out of her mouth, but she has perspective now. And SHIELD isn't a bunch of nazis. ]

Huh. And then you liked what you saw, I guess. Enough to recruit. Enter acquisitions. Whatever you wanna call it.

[ it doesn't really matter, he decides. not that part of things. organizations are organizations. the knights weren't any better than the mob, and shield probably wasn't going to be any better than the knights, when all was said and done. he's too tired, gay, and jaded for this.

what actually bothers him is the smaller things. the details. he takes a machete to the point: ]

So. How much of you is real and how much of you is some identity you made up?

[ She doesn't take a seat, but she does gravitate closer to one. ]

SHIELD found me the same way the Knighthood did. The same way you did. That's why we chose to do it like that. The Director and I decided it would be easier if it didn't feel like a lie. And since this was my first solo, deep cover ... [ She gestures a little with her hands as if indicating her surroundings. Not the apartment, but the present situation. ] There was no identity.

[ it's not ~sure jan~. it's a little soft, but not easily given. he believes her. well, he wants to believe her. and that's almost the same thing. skye is good and his friend and she deserves the whole entire moon. he saved her life and he would do it again.

so he decides to stop prying before he even starts. the most boo boo the fool move of all. ]

I get it. Why you did it. All for the job, right? I get it. [ a beat, and then ] Thanks for tracking me down to tell me.

[ because this is gonna be the end of this 👏 retired, bitch ]

I never wanted to hurt you, or Kali, or any of the Knights. [ She sits then on the couch beside him, reaching out to put one hand on his knee. This is totally fine and not weird at all. It's Allison and Luther in the attic. ] I wanted to tell you before. So many times. You don't know how hard it's been.

[ Something crosses her expression -- almost like she's disgusted to hear herself say it. And she is. She sounds just like him. ]

I don't — I know that it was my choice. I'm not trying to play it off.

I get it. [ it's turned more into deflecting. deflecting — but his hand moves to cover hers. yep. flowers in the attic. ] I've lied for the job, too, right? I've lied with the Knights. A million times. Maybe not for as long as you have, but. I get it. [ when you're trying real hard to process and doing a bad job 👌 ]

Or, I mean — maybe I just want to. Get it. I don't wanna be mad at you. But it's a lot.

[ he thought he was a better judge of character and that he would have ~clued in~ to something. but nope. boo boo the fool. ]

[ She settles back against the back of the couch and her hand slips away from Alex's. She knows what he's feeling because she'd felt it too, but worse, with Ward.

Fuck. It hits her around that time that he'd actually kept her secret all this time. Nope. Not unpacking that. Fuck that guy. ]

I know. [ And it's hard for her to accept, but it might just not ... be okay right this second. He might get to be mad at her for a while. ]

Well. [ he punctuates by shifting around. twining his own fingers together in his lap while trying to decide how he wants to word this. ]

It's not gonna matter much anymore, anyway. I don't know what I'm doing yet, but I'm not coming back to the castle. And if I'm not staying at the castle, I'm not safe anymore. I'm going off the grid. [flatly] Or at least, I was.

[ he uprooted his entire life once and he can do it again. too bad that instead of being easier the second go around, it actually feels even worse. ]

I know you can find me, but I'd rather you didn't.

[ Oh.

Ouch.

Skye doesn't expect it to hurt as much as it does. She's stricken, feeling hollow and cold for the bluntness of it. Of course he doesn't want to be found. He hadn't left so that she would find him, and she'd betrayed him. How furious had she been when Ward had found her at the castle? ]

Look, I understand if you're angry with me, Alex, with the Knighthood, but this is bigger than all of us. We're talking about gods. What are you gonna do? Just sit back and watch the apocalypse happen?

Maybe I am. Maybe I want to go have cocktails in Fiji. [ enjoy a domestic coffee shop au with my internet girlfriend. ] Enjoy the time I have before it all goes to shit. What are you gonna do? You got a god in your back pocket? Because Thor sure as fuck hasn't been taking my calls.

If everyone is going to die, I'd at least like to die knowing I tried to do something about it.

[ She may be a liar and a mole, but at least she has a spine. ]

I'm hearing a whole lot of "we're gonna do something" from everybody and not a whole lot of what "something" actually is. It's like "we're gonna do something" is the new "thoughts and prayers."

That's why we need all hands on deck. SHIELD, Hellsing, the Knights of the Silver Dragon, everybody. This is everyone's war. Keijen Blade might be some kind of shadowkind hell-god, but he's not the only shadowkind god. We just need to pool our resources and figure out what we really know about what he's doing.

[ That's step one. Rallying the troops is step one. Running away with tail between legs is step zero. ]

So we're looking to summon some other shadowkind god to beat him? Sure. Okay. That's the only way you're gonna get anywhere. 'Cause I've been in the middle of that shit before. [ he holds his hand up to share a pale scar through the palm of his hand. just being stabbed by loki things. ] Didn't have a great time.

No, I'm not saying we're looking to anything, I'm saying we have options. It's not hopeless, Alex.

Whatever it is, I'm not going back. I didn't sign up for whatever the Knighthood is now.

[ believe it or not, she is making headway. he hasn't shown her the door yet, so that's something. ]

Then don't sign up for the Knighthood. Sign up with SHIELD.

[ He won't be the first criminal in their ranks. ]

[ he leans back against the couch. this is his Considering face. when you're a survivalist but you were also kind of sold on having a coffee shop au with your girlfriend if everyone only had a few months left to live anyway. it's gonna take a lot for him to leave his coffee shop au. ]

Gonna need a better sales pitch than that.

SHIELD probably has information on your old mob buddies. We could protect you from whatever hit they probably want to put on you. We could probably even help you take them down, if we live long enough.

[ he squints a little. the gears are turning. imagine a world where the mob wasn't after him and he could just go back to new york and live a normal fuckin life?? ? ?

well, that was impossible, probably. normal wasn't a thing within the realm of possibility for him anymore. one doesn't simply retire from weird ass organizations like this. and it was all contingent on staying alive. but still. it would be nice to be able to go home, even if just for a little while. not constantly look over his shoulder. he was so busy looking for witness protection he never considered the idea of not needing protection in the first place. 🐸 ]

Can you actually tell me about SHIELD? I want the mission statement, the whole thing. I'm not signing up for a pyramid scheme.

[ it's teasing — he does not actually think shield is a pyramid scheme. ]

[ She affixes him with a look. Skye holds up her hands. ]

What do you want to hear? We're an ex-government organization that's dedicated to the protection and preservation of the Earth from Shadowkind and non-terrestrial threats. Just like the Knighthood. It also means, more often than not, intervening on behalf of Shadowkind themselves. Most threats are just ... people who need help.

When SHIELD went bad it was because it had been sabotaged from the inside. Corrupted. So we're off-grid now, but all those things in the papers about us, they were never true. The real SHIELD isn't like that.
