[ she'd find a lot of the actual info out there in the real world on demons: tons of varying reports of what they actually are, etc. but when she starts looking into demon fighting, she'd find out some things that seem more 'concrete', so to speak.

self professed 'demon hunters' are often debunked as frauds, but some people seem to make a real living out of it. the problem is that most of them claim normal people can't even see demons. which... makes it pretty hard for them to support any of their claims.

because demons are supposedly 'invisible' to all but a select few, it's difficult to fight them, and those who can supposedly possess supernatural means to do so, whether naturally, or because of spells or weaponry designed to be wielded against them. there's also lots of talk of using holy weapons against them - blessed steel, holy water, cleric spells, etc.

some sites classify 'vampires' as demons, and some talk about demons more as abstractions than monsters, as if they are simply manifestations of things like hatred, fear, gluttony, etc.

there's plenty of speculation on where they come from as well. christian mythology suggests hell and the devil, but those who believe in shadow pantheons talk about 'nine hells' instead, and an almost infinite number of 'demon dimensions' known collectively as the Abyss.

it's while she's in the middle of looking at this that kat leans over her shoulder. ]

[ her brow furrows and her teeth start worrying at her lower lip as she continues to read, growing more and more intently sucked into the screen the more she finds about these invisible monsters. invisible. funny. it'd seemed pretty visible to her and she wasn't anything special.

except she wouldn't really know. maybe she did have supernatural means. maybe all those run-ins with vamps and demons and things trying to kill her in her dreams were connected. maybe david anders was right and not some lunatic who should be committed just like she'd been pretty sure for the first week or so after she woke up here that she should have been.

she starts clicking through information on the abyss just as kat speaks, and it sends her jumping to such a degree that the ipad in her lap jerks and clatters to the floor of the aisle. she grips her armrest, glancing up with a slight hitch in her breath as she catches kat's eye. oh. right. ]

Everybody's got a hobby. [ she drops to pick the ipad back up, turning it over so it's face-down in her lap. ] Not exactly mission-related, I know.

Unless, of course, we decide to try the exorcism route after all.

And she's funny, too. [ that gets a little bit of a forced smile, but it fades. because she should be not-touchy. ] It wasn't exorcisms exactly. Just ... [ she purses her lips in thought a moment, then takes a leap. ] You do magic, right? So, you should--I mean, what's your take on all this stuff? "Invisible demons" or whatever.

Plenty of monsters out there can go invisible. Doesn't mean I believe in... demons in the like... Biblical sense. But I mean, I guess we know there are hell dimensions, if the clerics aren't full of bullshit, so I suppose whatever lives there counts as demons.

But, what about in this dimension? You know, like if they crossed over somehow, or ... I don't know. [ she shakes her head. ] Do you think they're here? Not like ... here-here, or right now-here, but ... Think about it. Spike and a whole bunch of others keep coming through the Veil. There's gotta be some badness slipping from dimension to dimension too.

Anything's possible. But I don't know that I'd classify them as different from monsters from the Shadow World. Just one more messed up thing that needs to get put down if it's evilling about town.

[slay]

What about the people who do that? [ it's more wary now. ] Like, uh, demon fighters. People who track these things down and do, um, do kill them. Ever run across one of those? I mean, it's kind of like how you were saying about Hellsing, right?

I can't say I've met somebody whose card read 'demon hunter'.

What's got you harping on all this, anyways? Is this about Spike?

[slay]

What? [ she blanches a little bit, then realizes the why of that connection. ] I -- No. No, this is ... We are all aware that I have entire days of my life in which I don't think about Spike, right?

Well, it's just that last time you had Hellsing and demons on the brain...

[slay]

[ she gives a kind of sigh because this is so different kat you don't even know. she looks dismissive and exasperated in a way that just wants the dealing with this part to be over with. ]

This is--[ different? could she sound more petulant child? ] It's not about that. Just forget it. It's ... it's stupid.

But now my interest is all piqued.

There's nothing pique-worthy. I was just ... curious. That's all.

Well, far be it for me to trample all over your demon ... researchy... fun times... [ (unsure) ] Should I let you get back to it?

[slay]

No! No, you don't have to--I wasn't really finding anything good anyway. [ she scoots over so kat can take the seat beside her on the aisle side. ] Talking's better.

[ kat plops her butt down when buffy makes room ]

I don't suppose anybody's warned you about Italy yet, have they?

[slay]

Warned me about what in Italy? [ her brow promptly furrows, perplexed by the lon glist of badness that could be coming. ]

Well, the country's sort of got this rep for being severely anti-Shadowkind. As in, Shadowkind live there, but there's a lot of prejudice against them. So it's usually better to keep that kind of thing on the down low - even if you're a human from another world.

[slay]

Got it. Super-Buffy kept to a minimum. [ there's a certain exaggerated soldier-y-ness to the way she says it. ] Why are they so anti-Shadowkind?

Bad historical experiences, probably. Dark elves, monsters, that sort of thing. And I know there was a huge influx of elves at one point, and it really put people on edge.

Huh. Guess if sense was supposed to be applied to it, it wouldn't be racism.

It's the ugly half of the job.

[slay]

But, this gnoll we're going to see. He's a Shadowkind, right? So, then how's he all ... popular entertainment business guy if the whole country hates him?

I'm guessing he's one helluva business man.

Either that, or he travels with a lot of heavies to keep from being harassed. Probably the latter, so I'm guessing getting to see him might not be easy.
