Standing across the street from the nondescript looking building, Rafael frowns across at the line of people entering into the fruit stand canopy.

"You are certain this is the place?" he asks uncertainly, without looking at Buffy and Myri beside him.

If you're sure. [ she follows after him, because really it's his call if privacy is the order of the day or not. unsurprised to find the sitting room empty, she heads up to the next set of wooden doors, rapping her knuckles on it in a quick knock, and then turning the knob to open them up. ]

[ jade sits at the little bureau across the room, fiddling with her hair. she turns her head at the sound of the opening doors, eyes falling on buffy. her gaze registers surprise and mild caution upon noting the other girl. ]

[Myri follows Buffy's lead, taking in the room as the doors open. Her interactions with Jade before were very minimal, but she does recognize the woman. She gives a silent nod before looking over her shoulder to Rafael.]

[ myri would see that they're in a large bedroom, centered around an emerald and oak canopied bed. jade doesn't look ready for any kind of performance, but she looks just as lovely in a simpler style of dress, like the day they dropped her back off here. she rises as they all hover there in the entrance. ]

Should I assume something's happened, with you all showing up here? What-- [ her words cut off as her eyes slide past the girls.

[ rafael tenses behind myri, one hand moving to the girl's arm to gently push past her. his shoulders rise and square as he stares like a man looking at a ghost, and they hold gazes for a long moment, though he seems at a total loss for words. ]

[ and then, expression entirely unchanged, as if he were no more interesting than the dressers lining the wall, her eyes slide right over rafael, and catch sight of something behind him. her entire face lights up, a wide smile crossing it as she meets des' gaze. ]

Glad to see you're in one piece.

Oh boy. [ instinctively, buffy reaches out to put a hand on rafael's arm. because she's seen him go all kung-fu crazy and as funny as it'd be to see it happen to des, it would not benefit this situation even remotely. ]

Jade, we're, uh. I-I mean it's nothing bad that's happened. We just thought ... We ran into someone that we figured you'd - that you'd wanna see.

jade quirks a brow, and her gaze is drawn back to rafael. she looks intrigued now as she studies him with a bit more interest, clearly wondering what his connection to her is supposed to be. ]

Oh? [ her lip remains curved up slightly, eyes skidding across his face - but still void of any trace of recognition ] And he is?

[ he's still staring, and when he finally speaks, he has to clear his throat to get the word out. there's pain laced into the tightness of his voice and posture, but he's clearly trying to conceal it. ] ... Rafael. Rafael Giovanni. [ it hangs in the air for a moment, and then he takes one step forward in a burst of sudden desperation, extending one open hand to the side emphatically ] We--

You mean to say you remember nothing of me?

[There's a time and a place to be an asshole. Even Desmond Descant knows this. His shit-eating grin becomes more of an awkward smirk of "well, how many other pieces could I be in?" while everyone else sort of stands around like they just realized they're standing on an active mine.

And then he just sort of shifts and whistles.]

Ohhhh boy.

Remember? [ the word drops from her lips, sharply surprised. she spares a glance at des at his comment, then looks to the other girls as if for an explanation, but then focuses back on raf once more. ]

From where?

[ he steps even closer, eyes scanning hers with an increasing sense of urgency. ] Italia. Five years ago. You were a dancer... that was how we met. And in Sienna -- [ he lets that hang there, full of implications, but she stares at him blankly, so he presses past it ] We sang together. Lived together for years. We-- [ his argument seems to die on his tongue, shoulders deflating as if he realizes abruptly that this is going nowhere fast ]

You do not remember.

[ awkward. ]

Nightscape has been known to memory-tamper. But, that much time? That much time that wasn't going on in here? [ she looks to des for an explanation, shaking her head, confusion evident. ]

Jade, how long have you had that necklace again? [Because it all keeps coming back around to that damn thing. If it's not the whole damn puzzle, it's a piece of it, anyway.] Out of curiosity.

[ jade's eyebrows draw together in confusion and frustration. it's clear that what he's telling her is putting cracks in her world view that she isn't exactly fond of. but she can't peel her eyes off him either. her fingers move to her necklace, winding around it. ] It came here with me. A gift from my mother. [ her eyes narrow slightly in rafael's direction. ] You have to be wrong. [ she shakes her head ] I came from the Shadow World, like hundreds of other people. Last summer. You have to have the wrong girl. [ she sounds like she's trying to convince herself something that she already doesn't believe. it's clear from the look in his eyes that he has the right freaking girl. ] You have to.

[Myri steps forward, forever cautious and the most nonthreatening ever.]

If you heard him speak about you, you'd never think he could be mistaken. And to his credit, it isn't as though your name is so common. We have come so far to bring him here. Please. Just... listen.

I'm listening. I just don't know what-- [ she catches his gaze again and seems to think twice about finishing that sentence. she sucks in a breath through her teeth and then turns to face him again, folding her arms across her chest, a tiny gesture of discomfort ]

Ok. So say you're right. What happened to me? Where did I go?

You told me-- [ he hesitates, clearly unsure of how to word this, glancing at the others ] that you had a way to leave this world. That was where I believed you to have gone all of these years. I thought I might never see you once more... to learn you were here...

Okay. So, wait. Five years ago you met, you lived together for years ... [ she looks at jade. ] But you got here last summer. [ her brow furrows. ] This isn't adding up, it's like -- ... Maybe. Maybe you did find a way to leave. And the veil went all memory-wipe-y on you again. It does that, I can't -- [ she shifts. ] I lost stuff when I got here. S-So, maybe you did go back, a-and it just pulled you through again, sans memories.

But, that's not -- Going back isn't supposed to be possible, is it?

[ jade's gaze turns internal, the implications sinking in ]

As far as I know, it's never happened before. Do you think--

This has something to do with this artifact everyone's so sure I know something about?

It is supposed to grant great power. [ of a non-specific sort, aside from the immortality clause. ] I'd say the ability to go backwards through the Veil qualifies as great. It's possible.

[Myri looks to Buffy] Perhaps coming here is like a doorway, but in order to access it from this side, we need the right key.

[And then back to Jade] It's possible that it's all connected. If you've lost memories of your time with Rafael, it's safe to say you could have also lost memories about the artifact.

More importantly... [Des digs in the pocket of his jacket and pulls out a slip of paper with the ouroboros that was painted on the alley drawn on it.] Does that mean anything to you? 'Cause it looks like we've got a lot of puzzle pieces to sort through with this mess and no idea what the picture on the box looks like

[ rafael's over here looking like his entire life is meaningless, but he'll chime in. ] It is an ouroboros - the symbol for infinity. Where did you find this?

[ jade looks at it and gives a tiny shake of her head ] Doesn't mean anything to me beyond that. [ her teeth worry her lip ] If you're right and somehow I've gone there and back again...

I don't know how I can help you. [ her shoulders droop slightly and she casts a fleeting glance at rafael, her general words clearly holding a specific apology to him as she gently adds: ] I'm sorry.
