Well, there's dinner and dancing and clubs and stores, but really I kind of just like... sightseeing. And people watching. It's so neat to just see how people... live their everyday lives, you know, when they think no one important's around to care.

[witchwoman]

[She smiles and tilts her head slightly at him.]

Perhaps I should start doing that to try to blend in more.

Why do you wanna blend in?

[witchwoman]

We're trying to work against a group that hates Shadowkind. Don't you think it's easy to tell how much I don't belong here?

[nosdacariad]

No, you're... you're right. [ he worries his lip with his teeth for a second ] It's the only sane thing to do, isn't it, when you're up against nearly impossible odds on their side. It'd be nice to be able to walk tall and proud and make a statement about who you really are and what you stand for, but we just... don't live in that world. Yet.

[witchwoman]

Yet. [She repeats] Where I came from, 'yet' was the furthest thing from my mind. Here, though? Here, I think it's possible.

[nosdacariad]

... It won't be easy. You could die trying.

[witchwoman]

You say that like someone who's come close to that very thing.

[nosdacariad]

[ he looks up in surprise, and then quickly ducks his head again ] Or maybe I just have a good imagination.

[witchwoman]

[Myri scoops up more ice cream for herself and eats it slowly.]

Why do you get so nervous when we talk like this?

[nosdacariad]

I'm just not a big... myself... talker. About.

[witchwoman]

Oh... [She's quiet, because... Well, that makes her uneasy to talk. She knows what that's like, but being here with all of them has changed that for her. So she's upset that Mark is still uncomfortable talking about himself.]

It's uh... just sorta boring, that's all. Not much to tell next to everyone's exciting lives around here.

[witchwoman]

In my experience, I often prefer to hear about the unexciting lives. I always wanted one of my own.

[nosdacariad]

There's definitely something to be said for the quiet life.

[witchwoman]

Well if there's something to be said, then maybe you should say something.

[ he looks startled initially, taking her very seriously and obviously a bit offended, but then he looks more closely at her expression and a smile of broken tension and relief breaks across his face. he laughs nervously and then points at her, raising his eyebrows and shaking his finger as if to say 'you got me'. ]

Ok, ok. I just uh, don't know what you'd like to know. I joined the Knights when I was pretty young. Still a teenager.

[witchwoman]

[She grins once he gets it.]

Oh, I don't know. We could trade? A story for a story?

You could start with why you joined so young.

I... I suppose I... [ he looks thoughtful, as if it's difficult for him to put into words ] I wanted to make a difference and help people, hands on, and I'd already spent most of my life feeling like I'd never get a chance to do that, not that way. When the opportunity showed up, it was like I didn't have a choice. I didn't have a lot to go back to at home, and Wynn...

Well, I guess he treated me like family right off the bat. I'll be honest, it wasn't even about Shadowkind for me, not that I didn't want to help them, but it wasn't personal or anything like with some people. It just seemed like the best place in the world to really... lose myself in, and hopefully come out the other side a... [ he sucks in a breath and looks down ]

A better man.

[witchwoman]

I'd say you accomplished that mission. [She offers him her sweetest smile.] And we're all the luckier to have you.

Thanks, but I, uh, don't really think I'm there yet.

[witchwoman]

I suppose we're all a work in progress... But what makes you say that? You don't give yourself enough credit, Mark.

[nosdacariad]

It's... just a feeling. I see what others are willing to do and put on the line, and I look up to them, but I'm not one of them.

[witchwoman]

I understand.

Sometimes I look at Kat and Gar... all of you, really. And I wonder why Wynn would bother with someone like me.

But we're all here for a reason. We are serve a purpose.

That's the best part of being with them, really. Feeling like you get to really do something every day of your life.
