[ Yesterday, members of team failboat went to the bayou hideout of the mysterious woman known only as "the Mind Master", on some intel from the captured Olean Gilbert. What they discovered was a very bizarre woman, who played mind games with them, and seemed to evince little concern for their interference. Another man, whom may have been Chad Becksworth entered, and told her that "Decker" was finished stalling and all was in readiness... The two of them fled before the Knights could get much information from either of them, and set a hideous creature to attack them: which appeared to be the result of a Frankenstein-like scientific process that sewed a human woman together with a giant snake.

The next day, another team of Knights infiltrated NOVA HQ to hack into appointment records and discover the names of those intended to meet with Chad Becksworth. Just as they downloaded the list, the scheduled meeting attendees arrived: it seemed they were meeting today, and the Dragon's Claws insisted that the younger Knights retire to the hotel, where all will be able to monitor the meeting onscreen as they spy on it and broadcast video. Knights' allies (Des, Rafael, Elena) are invited to watch as well. ]

[He smiles back, trying not to let his nervousness show as the hostess comes over to them and brings them to their table.] Have you had it before? You know, that you can remember.

Nope. Buuuuut, I am taking it as a good sign that I'm not instinctively opposed to the idea. [ she props her elbows on the table as they sit down, leaning her chin in her hands. maybe they should have invited myri. ]

[ their waiter brings them water and she starts to take a drink JUST IN TIME TO START CHOKING ON IT because that sounded a lot like he meant sex. she gives a couple sputtered coughs and then lowers the glass. ]

Right. Like ... rock-climbing.

[He gives her a look and raises his eyebrows because seriously, Buffy? Seriously? Also because she's really cute when she's awkwardly flustered about sex.]

Heeey, I think I'm ready to order, how about you? [ she prompt picks up her menu. ]

[He picks up his as well, but instead of looking at the menu, watches her over the top of his.

Might as well go all out.]

It's nice spending time with you like this.

We always spend time like this, Spike. [ she gives him a flat, clueless look over her own menu. because it's true - they've gone out to grab dinner plenty of times before. that was a hazard of being teammates for so many months, and friends for nearly as many. ]

That's what I'm saying, love. We spend a lot of time together. And I like it.

Y'know, I did actually gather that from the continued spending of time, but noted. And ... thanks. I think.

[Man, she was not getting the subtle hinting, even a little. Time to try straightforward. He took a deep, unnecessary breath and wished he'd found a restaurant that allowed smoking. He could use a cigarette right now to calm his nerves.] What I'm trying to say is--

[Whoops, interrupted by the waitress showing up.]

[ buffy doesn't seem to mind - in fact, she peppily instigates conversation with the waitress while placing her order and keeps her there longer. ]

[bigbad]

[Goddammit Buffy you are not making this easier. By the time they've both placed their orders, Spike's temporarily lost his nerve again.]

Reckon you've tried the ones you picked before you came here?

[slay]

I don't know. I mean, they sound good, but it's possible I thought that the first time I tried sushi and now that I don't remember, I'm doomed to repeat my sushi-related trauma until I find a kind I like. [ she fiddles with her chopsticks, considering this, because really it's a much bigger philosophical question - does she have the instinctive memory of experience to help her avoid badness and live a better life with this second chance, or is she simply doomed to repeat her mistakes because she doesn't remember them? ]

[bigbad]

[She looks thoughtful enough that Spike's pretty sure this isn't just about sushi.]

I wouldn't dwell on that, pet. Not when there's no way of knowing.

[slay]

But, what if there was? Rafael, he's so determined to help Jade remember. What if he can really do it? What if that meant we could remember?

[bigbad]

[Spike shrugs a little, fiddling with his napkin. Time was, he wanted to remember more than anything. But he's thought about it more, now that he's settling into his life here. He's got a family here. Important work. He's happy. What if things were different wherever he was?

He's a vampire. As much as he doesn't remember ever hurting anyone, as much as he doesn't want to hurt anyone, he knows somewhere in his heart that it's unlikely. He's too good at fighting, and he's a bloody vampire. He wasn't foolish enough to think he'd gone through... however many decades it had been without ever killing. But so long as he didn't remember, there was that hope.

If Rafael found a way, though, he would take it. He'd rather know. As blissful as ignorance was.]

People have been trying for centuries. How likely is it they'll figure it out now?

[slay]

You haven't seen the way he acts about her. [ she shakes her head, looking distracted. it's hard to tell in her expression whether she's lamenting the intensity of those feelings out of jealousy, or if she's just so entirely in awe of having that kind of devotion to someone that she finds it inspiring. ]

How in love with her he is. I think ... I think it'd be wrong to underestimate what that kind of love can help a person do. If there's a way ... he'll find it. [ she looks back at spike. ] And if there's not, he'll never stop looking.

[Spike tries not to scowl. Rafael is the last thing he wants to talk about right now. At least she's talking about how in love Rafael is with someone else. It's probably uncharitable for him to think it, but thank god for unrequited, doomed love. He wouldn't have a chance if Rafael made a move.

He probably doesn't have a chance now.]

You know, I think I get it. I think if it were me and... the right person, I'd go that far. [He doesn't remember ever being in love. He thinks he might feel it with Buffy, though. Or something like it. But he thinks he's that sort of person. He doesn't think he could ever let go of the special someone if he found her. If it's love, it's worth fighting for.] What wouldn't a man do for the girl he loves, right?

It's a short list, that's for sure. [ she sighs, settling back into her seat and pushing jade and rafael to the back of her mind. she doesn't want to dwell on it too heavily, lest she brings down the mood. ] Guess we don't have much happy stuff to make good conversation with these days.

[Oh hey, waitress is back with their food. Spike does his best not to glare at her. SHE HAS REALLY BAD TIMING.]
