[ he does, to his credit, actually look a little chagrined when she chastises him ] Sorry. Understanding magic... was never really my strong suit.

But it sounds like a tough time. Not that different from what I've seen out there in some parts of the world.

Don't think of it like magic. I'm left-handed, that doesn't mean my parents are both left-handed. Some are more dominant than others, like people with brown eyes as opposed to blue. Is that easier?

Anyway, it's not that bad anymore. [Says the girl who probably has her own wanted poster.] Workers have protection if they want it, the registration act bombed.

And here, as far as I know, we don't have workers at all. So you shouldn't wind up specifically persecuted.

I guess. [She nudges her chin against the pillow she's holding, kneading it down until she's comfy.] The idea of knights seems a little antiquated now, what exactly do they do?

Well, considering that the Shadow World itself is pretty antiquated, I think the idea is to bridge the gap between the two and figure out what both worlds hold in common. The idea of what's honorable, what's worth fighting for, couched in terms people from that world will understand, and one people of this world will too, albeit nostalgically.

Okay, it makes sense. It just seems kind of old-fashioned. Although, gender neutral, which is nice.

I suppose an organization so fixated on racial equality would be a bit hypocritical if it were gender prejudiced.

Yeah except most are. Anyway, equality aside, what else do we do?

Protect this world from monsters that get dropped out of the Veil... quarantine dangerous magical items, stop magical threats...

There's not much magical about facing down a horde of marauding orcs.

Savage green humanoids, with boar tusks, who live in barbaric tribes and are notoriously ornery.

You might want to reign in the disgust reaction. Not all of them are bad, and we might end up working with some. In fact, there are some who are Knights.

Well, when you set them up to be disgusting I can't exactly help what I'm being given. Really. Hoards of marauding orcs who live in barbaric tribes? Maybe if you didn't generalize them all into one thing I would be less disgusted.

[ ... :| ] Fine. Point taken. Anyways, that's the kind of thing we deal with. Wynn assigns us missions based on intel gathered from around the world, and packs us off to take care of things.

[So basically it works the same way as The Family, but you know, they're the good guys. And actually Good, not fake good like Cassel's stupid FBI shtick.

Wynn evaluates the likely skill sets needed on each mission and assigns us to them based on our sects, once you've become a full Knight. For example, a mission likely to see a lot of combat would get more members of the Dragon's Hide, Light, and Fire. An investigative mission or one about an artifact might see more members of the Hoard.

[As he talks, Lila translates it into Zacharov terms. Which works until the sects and then it's just dbgdkhgls. Which is not a language she speaks.]
