Well, I guess every kid dreams of growing up in a castle. So there was... that. But it gets old when you're used to it from day one. Especially with how hectic things can get around here. It's a lot of blood and battle for a child to be exposed to.

[the blood and battle thing sets off an alarm in his head, but he keeps his mouth on lock.] I never did. But then, we didn't really have any castles where I'm from.

Which is where, if you don't mind my asking?

It shouldn't matter, should it? I'm supposed to be focusing on building a new life here.

[but it's hard to forget when you can't stop having nightmares about killing other kids when you were only 14. and having to deal with the same shit all over again just before winding up here. how lucky could he really be if that was what he was left with? and to be the only one who actually really remembers out of katniss and haymitch.]

True... but I know that for a lot of people, the few memories they do have still inform who they are.

I think you could say that's true of anyone.

Well, most people have more than a few.

I think I have more than a few, if most other people I've talked to are anything to go by.

You remember most of it?

I think so, but who can be sure?

I guess it's no different from the rest of us. People's memories alter events anyway. It's not as if we can trust them.

Although ... I must admit, sometimes I feel like it would be better not to remember anything. You know, a clean slate.

[telekinection]

Because there are people you miss? Or... because you don't want those memories?

The latter.

I'm sorry. [ there's a beat ] You... you're from Katniss' world, aren't you?

... Yes. You know her?

[telekinect]

Katniss... was having some problems with memories of her own. Ones she couldn't control, that were affecting her in damaging ways. She was sent to me for help.

[65]

[eye-squint of ~suspicion~] What did you do?

[telekinect]

What she wanted me to do.

I put them somewhere in her mind where she can't get to them.

[65]

You messed with her mind? And she let you? That was what she wanted?

[finnick sounds horribly offended about the whole thing. so much mind mutilation going on around him ... and he can't believe katniss would willingly subject herself to something like that. then again, it's not like he even knows katniss that well anymore. whoever this new katniss is, without all their memories of home. ]

[telekinection]

[ she looks away, watching the water swaying back and forth gently in the pool as she says softly: ] You have to understand that Katniss witnessed a terrible event on her mission, that seemed to have triggered some kind of deep emotional scarring. She was hardly functional. She couldn't make sense of it. Some sort of PTSD, but without the scaffolding of her previous life experience to sort it out and deal with it.

She wanted to be able to continue her work with us, and it seemed the best way.
