Unlike the grandiose nature of the squiring ceremony each Knight undergoes upon their initial entrance into the Knighthood, the graduation to Full Knight status takes place in a much more intimate affair, between the Knight, their mentor, invited friends, and the members of the sect to which they will be inducted. There's no pompous music, no stolid rank and file, no elaborate march.

Buffy's invitees are given seats of honor at the front of the ranks of the Dragon's Hide members - the largest sect in the castle, with the most representatives here, and Jack, Wynn, and Dovan wait up at the front of the room for Buffy to approach them, but the attitude of the ceremony is much more relaxed, full of smiles and light conversation on all sides.

Wynn finally gets things rolling, by saying in his loud listen-to-me voice: "Approach and kneel, Sir Buffy Summers."

Just lurking in the corner with a drink and staring at Buffy wistfully though not... quite... daring to approach her... FOR NOW.]

She's not really sure what's been going on between the two of them (them being spike and buffy), but she's been pretty good at reading both of them for some time now, so she's at least aware that SOMETHING isn't okay. She walks up and just leans against some spare wall in his corner, not really saying anything at first. And then:]

[Oh awkward this is the last conversation he wants to have. He shakes his head.]

Nothing, pet. Everything's fine.

[Sense motive: 20]

You're lying. [But she doesn't sound upset about it- just concerned.]

Spike...

[He shrugs, glancing away.]

Buffy and I had some... disagreements, all right?

[Instinct caused her to pull back, not wanting to push, especially during a celebration.]

Alright. [Her reply is quiet as she steps back.] I didn't mean to... I shouldn't pry. I'm sorry.

[He gives her a softer look.]

No, pet, it's fine. Just... maybe not here and now.

[She nods, recognizing that he's probably right. Still, she edges closer until she's close enough to slip an arm around his waist, leaning into him for a half-hug.]

If you need to talk, just come find me, okay?

[He turns and presses a soft kiss to her head.] Of course, pet. [But he probably won't.]

[ buffy's not nearly so non-confrontational, and she doesn't care if they have to air their dirty laundry in front of the whole damn party. maybe a part of her, a horrible part, is hoping rafael does hear it. but most of her hopes he doesn't because she'd be too ashamed of her actions. ]

Thought you decided you weren't coming.

[He shrugs, shoving his hands into his duster pockets and glancing away.]

Changed my mind. Didn't want to miss your big day.

[ she's touched. she wishes she weren't, but she is. she wishes she weren't because she can't and won't give spike what he wants from her, not now, probably not ever. ]

Well. [ it takes the fight out of her, either way. ] Enjoy the party.

[He glances up at her, a little anxiously.]

Is it okay? Me being here?

I think that's your call, not mine.

It's your party, pet. [A beat.] Congratulations, by the way.

[ the bristle is evident. the only reason he wasn't going to come was because he'd decided she was a terrible person. she certainly wasn't going to change her tune just because he showed. ]

Didn't do anything the rest hadn't done already.

[He notices, and he glances away. Maybe he shouldn't have come. Things are too awkward between them.]

Even so. I'm-- [Proud? Not exactly something he wants to admit. It's too... invested. Too much admitting the very obvious fact that he's still pretty heavily in love with her.] Good job.
