It's only a few hour plane ride from England to Italy, but the team has a little time to settle in and get to know each other and/or ask questions of Zee in preparation for meeting with her dad.

And of course, when they arrive, she takes the lead, bringing them through the streets of Florence, Italy at night and leading them around the door of a sold out theater advertisement for the Amazing Zatara.

Don't recall. Just how much did you lose? [ she acts like she doesn't know. it is ... a really good thing her bluff ranks are so high bc she rolled a 4. which is a bluff 15. ]

Sort of difficult to tell when you don't have anything to compare it to, isn't it? [Spoilers: a lot. But to be fair, it's mostly because of half-assed curse memories, not the Veil. He has zero way of knowing what the Veil really took from him.]

[ except she knows exactly what to compare it to, knows exactly what it took and what he's missing out on. she's struggling to figure out her own sentiments on that - but it's hard. hook is the only one other than herself who remembers the enchanted forest even exists. ]

[The bad news is he got a nat 20 sense motive check, so he thinks you're acting really suspicious right now.] And why are you so interested?

Just ... trying to figure out if we can help one another with what we don't remember. I know we weren't exactly close, but there might still be gaps we can fill in.

As I recall, we seem to remember things in Storybrooke differently. And, to the best of my knowledge, the Veil doesn't fabricate memories. [Which complicates things and makes hearing about things that much more complicated, because how do you sort it all out, exactly? Is there some alternate Storybrooke somewhere? Is his head that screwed up?

He'd avoided this conversation, but, hey, they might be about to die in a plane crash.] What do you make of that?

How do you explain your interesting discovery of magic proficiency?

[ she dodges the question by providing one of her own - or, rather, tries to supply an answer through it. magic. there was magic going on in storybrooke. and planting that seed in his mind might be the first step to getting him to accept what the reality of that land was. ]

For the most part, it was Hasmed repeatedly telling me I'm a terrible shot and encouraging me to seek other interests.

[That's not an answer. At all. He doesn't think much on the whole "capacity for magic" thing, because it did come too naturally. Even his teaching Faye had shades of things he didn't learn from Hasmed or anyone in the Knights.]

All right, that explains how you found out about it. Not how you're so good at it.

Maybe it's not the first experience you've had with magic.

[undealt]

[He hesitates for a moment.] I've been avoiding hearing anything about my past because I'm not entirely certain I'm going to like what's there.

[He had this conversation with Belle. Attempting to rationalize lives unlived and becoming new people while still holding onto one day breaking the Veil's stranglehold.]

Now when we first here, you mentioned magic in Storybrooke. Said it had "extended farther than the town line," as I recall. Is that what I've forgotten- that my quiet little town is actually magical?

[uncurse]

[ she's cornered. there's no real way to explain this away with a convincing lie. she has to tell him storybrooke's magical - but how much more should she share? he's not rumpelstiltskin, he's gold, and no amount of remembering is going to change that fact.

but he is, at the same time. he's the dark one, still. that has to mean something. she purses her lips, studying him, then sighs. ]

It is. Or ... was. Storybrooke doesn't exist in this world - believe me, I looked.

[undealt]

It wouldn't have been the same if it did. [He checked too, upon his arrival. And now that he's thinking about it and how that fills in some confusing references Emma dropped in their first conversation, it doesn't really elaborate on any gaps or sensations or feelings. Hook, the nagging sensation to keep looking for something. Sometimes he looks at Belle and thinks he sees a spark there, but he just might want that connection to be there.] Of all the things to forget. [A light scoff.] Seems too easy, doesn't it? I have access to magic now- forgetting magic seems pointless.

[uncurse]

Maybe ... Maybe that's not all you forgot. I mean, to make you forget magic, you'd have to forget just about everything connected to it. Any ... history you might have had with it.

[undealt]

[He eyes her suspiciously. (sense motive 13)] Maybe. Either way, you seem to recall a great deal.

[So either nut up or shut up, woman.]

[uncurse]

A lot, but not everything. [ she's quick to change the subject to what she can get from him - which is confirmation of something that's been nagging her since the squiring party. ] There's something that's been bothering me, and I think you might be able to help. When I came to Storybrooke last year ... I had a reason. Something brought me there, and I can't remember for the life of me what it was.

[undealt]

[He considers her for a moment and he might even look sympathetic, even if he can't really explain where that's coming from. Natural, he supposes. It's one thing to forget the shape of your town and the life you led because of it. It's another to forget a child.] Are you sure you want to know the answer to that question?

[uncurse]

[ the sympathy tells her all she needs to know. gold doesn't do sympathy. not ever. ]

If I wasn't sure, I wouldn't be asking you.

[undealt]

His name is Henry. [It's measured. He's not going to lie to her, but he certainly isn't going to just tell her she has a son. She can draw that conclusion herself, if she wants, because that's a terrible thing to have to break to someone and he might not be a scrupulous or nice man, but this much means something to him, somehow.]

My kid.

[ emma's voice is hollow. she never learned his name. never heard it. hook didn't know it. but he'd said that was who she was trying to get back to, and rumple's behavior all about confirms it. ]

[undealt]

[He turns away from her, staring vacantly at one of the overhead signs because it seems a better thing to focus on.] He's ten years old. And quite remarkable, really, for a boy his age.

[uncurse]

I know how old he is. [ she did remember having him, after all. just not any part of him coming back into her life. ]

[undealt]

So you remember the boy, but not that he found you. [Well, isn't that convenient.] I wonder what that means in the grand scheme of things.

[uncurse]

The grand scheme of - I don't give a damn about the grand scheme of things, I give a damn about this kid. I gave him up for adoption, if he had to come find me, and I'm gone ... [ he needed her. something was wrong. and now she's forgotten him, the same way her parents forgot her, and it's killing her to think she did the same thing to some other kid and - ] Is he here? Is he in this world?

[undealt]

Now how would I know that? [Seriously, Emma. Seriously.] I haven't exactly been keeping track of the foster care system. Though I imagine Wynn does.

[uncurse]

Because you have magic, and through some coincidence four people from our world have managed to stumble into this castle already. [ f u c k. four. she said four. she should have said three, because he didn't need to know about hook if he didn't already, because hook is a big long enchanted forest explanation that she doesn't want to give. ]
