The Knights split up, Tia taking Rose, Dimitri, and Amrita in the rented vehicle towards two of the more distant sites from the hotel, while Eric leads Aurelius and Lila through the back alleys of the city to somewhere nearby. It's late by now, and Chicago is alive with the sights and sounds of nighttime in the distance. A light rain falls, dripping off the overhangs of the roofs above and pooling against the sidewalks.

I can walk you through keeping things you don't want to share to yourself. But if you won't accept the link, I don't feel comfortable sending you headfirst into danger on your first mission this way. We can always let someone else go. [ but it's clear that despite her threat, she thinks rose has a right to participate in this leg of things, from the way her eyes slide meaningfully to davin. you know him, comes a voice in rose's mind. we need someone who can register his intentions. i can't read vampire minds the same as the living. ]

[When Rose opened her mouth it was with the sole intention of telling Tia to go ahead and send somebody else, the voice in her head silencing the comeback that danced on her lips.

She didn't speak immediately but her face said it all, shifting from defiant to begrudging acceptance in the span of a few seconds, Rose's gaze shifting from Tia, to Davin then back again.]

Fine. Let's just... do this. [Well she was agreeing she never promised to be happy about it.]

[ tia nods briskly and glances around at each of them in turn ] If you've never linked before, you need to know a few things. First, you have to let me in, and it's going to feel ... invasive. Wrong. Your first instincts will be to push me out, but you need to control those, drop those defenses.

Secondly, once the link is established, I'll be trying to help each of you individually 'rein in' your thoughts. There's usually a bit of panic when you feel the others there - like I said, it'll only link our surface thoughts, but people tend to go into 'thinking about what they don't want to think about' mode. So work with me, and stay calm.

[ she lets out a breath and raises a hand to her temple ] Alright. Relax...

[Though at first Rose's instinct is to resist, a look in Davin's direction sees her relax and allow the connection to be made, all her focus going on keeping everyone else from hearing things she didn't want them hearing. (Con Check 16)]

[ while aurelius' mind is like a well trained steel trap, eric, of all people, is the one to mentally resist tia's efforts to help keep things from rising to the top that he doesn't want... and so those who are linked in already get a very odd flash of an angry tangle of memories that he's desperately thinking about hiding, an emotional rage where he's beating someone to a bloody pulp...

and then tia finally manages to slam a wall up. she doesn't look at him, and he stares in shock at them all for a moment, before breaking the awkward silence. ]

Why isn't Lila hooked in?

I can't do it. [She shakes her head a little, voice quiet before her mouth presses into a line.] You guys can run commentary between Rose and I.

[And Rose stares back at Eric. Rather openly. Not even trying to hide her staring with all the wide eyes and mouth open a little, glory.

It's entirely possible that rather than horrify her, her respect for Eric just went up about three notches.

What? That was kind of badass. Also so something she has done.]

She's not? [Brightening.] Oh well. Let's go then?

[ dean grabs davin by the arm to drag him towards the door, but eric vacillates a moment before turning to lila as the others depart. ]


Go on. [ those in the mental link can get his brief flash of thinking what a bad idea this probably is but-- ] With them.

What, no. [She doesn't want to go with Rose. She very obviously thinks this is a horrible idea. Very horrible. Completely and unequivocally horrible. There is a reason she didn't volunteer to go with them.

She opens her mouth to protest, but closes it, shaking her head.] Fine.

[And if the scowl on Rose's face didn't give away her hatred of this idea, the rather angry thoughts that spike through the link certainly did, including a very hot and steamy embarrassing memory of Rose making out with Faye courtesy of Little Miss Creepy Touch. (Will Save... Crit fail).

Cheeks now flaming red, Rose grips her stake tighter and shoots a glare in Eric's direction as if all of that was somehow his fault.]

Whatever. [Teeth gritted together.] Can we just - go.
