The "afterparty" is rumored to be the real main event of the night. A black-tie affair in the lavish, opulent ballroom, it is every new Knight's chance to mingle and meet some of their new brothers in arms. Of course, a couple hours are provided following the ceremony for everyone to change, do hair and makeup, and choose from the vast array of formal attire in the closets of the balcony "dressing rooms" located at the top of spiraled staircases on either side of the ballroom. A separate dressing room exists for men and women, and they include full bathrooms (with, thankfully, very modern plumbing).

The squires are usually among the last to arrive, and the ballroom is full to the brim with a fancy array of people, of all shapes, sizes and species.

Hope you aren't shy. They're all here to meet you.

Feel free to make your own open threads for people to come congratulate your newly pledged knight.

ooc; also if your Knight wants to get all gussied up, you can make a Disguise (Cha) check for how good they were at hair/makeup/stylin', etc! This goes for... any time.

Perhaps I could entertain you for a bit? I'm Phineas Dantalion, one of the newer squires.

[He raises his glass, but doesn't extend his hand, hoping to keep the old man from seeing his strange tattoo - and generally not wanting to shake hands with a man of the cloth.]

I'm aware of who you are. [ something in his tone makes it seem like he knows more than just your name, too ] What sort of entertainment were you considering, Sir Dantalion?

[A bit taken aback by all the ominous overtones, Phineas stares at the man for a moment]

Well... I'm not entirely sure. What does a servant of the 'crying God' do for fun, sir...?

My recreational hours are few and far between. I'm an old man, and my tastes are simple. A warm light to read by and a good book are all the entertainment I require.

Anything specifically pique your interests? I intend to collect a lot of... reading materials... when my missions allow it. I could keep an eye open for curiosities that might appeal to you...

Theology is my specialty. Few retain a great deal of interest in the field.

Ah, well sir, I just happen to be a student of religion myself.

There was a time I was being prepared to be a priest, myself, before I began practicing... magic.

Is that so? [ he actually looks interested now, looking phineas over carefully ] A priest of whom?

My father was a crusader of Tyr, and a high-ranked member of the Seropaen order.
[He swirls his drink, and takes a sip]
He would have had me follow in his footsteps... But it wasn't for me.

[ something alters in the old man's expression, hardening slightly as he looks down at his nose at phineas ] The cult of pact magic hunters?

[ he reaches up to rub his chin absently ] I had thought the remnants of that Order to be mostly scattered in Faerun these days. Has something occurred to spur them back to the hunt, or is your father merely the keeper of a dying tradition?

More the latter, I'd say.

He fell in with a fanatical sort, and their inner circle were Seropaenes, best I can reckon.
We didn't speak much already at that point. I was digging into my grandfather's research that my father tried to secret away... I'm told they didn't get along well, so you can imagine how he felt when I chose that line of study.

What exactly was the nature of this line of study that the Seropaens would be so eager to dismiss you for it?

[thesleeper]

[Suddenly aware of how far he may have been over-reading the old man's cryptic tones... though also unsure how far he could yet backpedal]

Well, my... family. Distant family, they were magic users of all sorts; witches, wizards, warlocks, sorcerers, truenamers, planeswalkers, you name it, I'm related to one. And they all shared a penchant for archiving, it was sort of a family tradition to observe and record, and maintain passed-down knowledge within the family.

Now, there was some small amount of documentation on pact magic in the lot, but I couldn't decipher most of it. They simply wanted it destroyed, while I wanted to protect it - being the family's heritage and all. That is what made me an enemy of their order.

And I imagine you lost most of this upon coming here?

[thesleeper]

The knowledge of my studies seem, as far as I can tell, mostly intact... I didn't have any of the tomes themselves on me, though, if that's what you mean.

It's a shame really, it wasn't as large as your collection of books here in this library, but the age and contents of some of those old tomes... They're just irreplaceable...

You might make good use of your time here by recording what knowledge you remember. Such accounts make up a great deal of our library's most useful volumes.

I may very well have to do that, Sir.

[Phineas always has his journal for notes and such, but he's actually never considered authoring a book intended for anyone else's eyes...]

Probably worthwhile to at least run through it all in my head again anyway, maybe it will jog some other lost memories.

I wouldn't put too much stock in such dreams, Sir Dantalion. Memories torn away by the Veil cannot be 'jogged'.

[He smiles at his small jab, and raises his glass to the old man.]


[He suddenly seems a bit sullen, though, reminded of that damned note and tattoo... He finishes his drink, and deftly snags another.]

A glass of wine, on occasion.

I had you pegged as more of a... Scotch kind of guy.

I... I used to drink to forget... something. [He runs his hand through his hair, and laughs nervously.] Can't remember what it was now... So now... Now, I drink to forget that I can't remember it.

You and many others here. There's a reason the bars are well stocked.

There's some wisdom in that, I suppose.

[He looks down for a bit, brightening up after a moment]

No point dwelling on all that, new subject! Why did you join the knights?

Because of my calling. The Knights provide me with the ability to reach many of those who suffer and help ease their pain. You might say Ilmater led me here.

[thesleeper]

I don't know... [He scans the room] They all seem to be doing alright.

Are these... "missions" really so dangerous that we've got clerics staffed on the grounds?
