The "afterparty" is rumored to be the real main event of the night. A black-tie affair in the lavish, opulent ballroom, it is every new Knight's chance to mingle and meet some of their new brothers in arms. Of course, a couple hours are provided following the ceremony for everyone to change, do hair and makeup, and choose from the vast array of formal attire in the closets of the balcony "dressing rooms" located at the top of spiraled staircases on either side of the ballroom. A separate dressing room exists for men and women, and they include full bathrooms (with, thankfully, very modern plumbing).

The squires are usually among the last to arrive, and the ballroom is full to the brim with a fancy array of people, of all shapes, sizes and species.

Hope you aren't shy. They're all here to meet you.

Feel free to make your own open threads for people to come congratulate your newly pledged knight.

These... Strigoi sound more like what we call vampires in our world.

'Common' might be something of a stretch. I've only ever met one myself, and he's an exception to the rule.

Exception to your rule? Meaning he's closer to a Moroi?

[But not common is a good thing. A very good thing.]

Well, he seems quite in control of his, erm, appetites, and he fights for good - with us, actually.

[She shifts uncomfortably.]

Then, yes, he definitely sounds more like a Moroi, then. They're still dangerous, though.

[rationalizes]

[ gar gives her a somewhat sympathetic smile ] Well, yes, but almost all our Knights are, in their own way. It's something I'm quite glad of, when we fight on the same side.

It's very different than where I'm from. Humans and...supernatural creatures don't coexist well. It's odd to see.

[She was going to say vampires, but there's way more than just that here. And by odd she means skin-crawling.

Still, she decided she was going to do this and she'd have to adjust. She as clearly the only one here with this problem.]

It's still something rather new in this world as well. Mankind only became truly aware that we weren't alone in the last century. The transition wasn't always... a smooth one.

I'm sure humans were terrified. With good reason.

[rationalizes]

There was quite a lot of prejudice, initially, to overcome. Some places are still fighting that battle.

Of course, there are dangerous creatures from the other world, but there were innocent civilians as well, pilgrims of different races who merely wished to live benign lifestyles.

[celerystick]

I only have experience with vampires, and innocent civilians has never been a good way to describe them. It's hard to imagine.

I was taught to remember that all vampires are evil, that magic is unnatural, but I'm not sure I...always agreed with them.

[Because the one memory she has is of a Dhampir girl, and Sydney had trusted her. Such thoughts would have been blasphemous, as would have lying to help her, and she knew she'd done it anyway.]

Those open minded sort of instincts will help you through the transition into dealing with all of this. Don't you worry.

Those same kinds of thoughts would have gotten me sent straight to re-education if anyone found out.

[Which is part of the reason that she's had a hard time accepting those thoughts. It was supposed to mean that something was wrong with her.]

And what would... 're-education' entail?

I...don't really know. They don't talk about the details, especially not the ones that come back. But they seem...different when it's over. Not entirely there anymore.

[It's clear from the way she's telling it like its a ghost story that children talk about around a campfire that she's internally terrified of going through it.]

That sounds a bit like something out of a science fiction story...

And all of this feels like it's out of a fantasy novel.

I suppose that it would. But there are certainly laws that govern this universe, the same as any. Something I find immensely comforting.

[celerystick]

I did too. Until all the rules apparently changed on me.

[rationalizes]

Not all of them. Friendship, for example, works precisely the same in every world. [ omg gar you sound like a rl care bear, stop that ] I hope you find that a bit of a comfort, at least.

[That puts her at a pause, and she shifts back and forth a bit in her high heels before she smiles and nods her head.]

[She offers her hand as well for a friendly shake.]

[She's relieved to find the first person who she's felt truly comfortable around.]

We'll have to speak soon, but I have some experiments to go check on... It wouldn't do much good for me to set the castle on fire while we're all at a ball! [ she laughs goodnatured-ly but then her face falls as if she realizes that were an actual possibility ] Oh dear... Excuse me.
