[ some mentor knights like to give their squires a little space before contacting them to begin training - after all, the castle's huge, there's a lot to explore, and just getting the feel of the place down can take months. jimmy's knight is one of these, so it takes a couple of weeks before he asks jimmy to come meet him in the dragon's hoard lab: easily recognizable by the big 'biohazard' labelled doors in the main hallway. entering reveals a multi-storied library, smaller than the castle library but full of strange models suspended from the ceilings, etc.

kadir sits at a table on the balcony, reading away. it'll take a spot check roll of 15 or higher to notice him up there... ]

[He jumps when he hears the other guy's voice. Okay, weird. He looks up to where it came from and finds Yassin' in the library above him. He'd totally missed that.]

Yeah, hi.

[demolitionman]

Hope I didn't scare you. [ he sounds wryly amused by the possibility. ] I was just getting some work done.

[beseeched]

Startled is more like it. I thought I was alone.

[He pulls his hand out of his pocket and extends it to the other man for a good firm shake.]

You already know me. Jimmy.

[demolitionman]

Heard of you. Not really the same as knowing. [ he gives one firm shake in response. ] Kadir Yassin.

[beseeched]

We'll have plenty of time for that song and dance. Heard of is better than walking into this thing without a clue.

[Or so he thinks. Jimmy retrieves his hand and slips it back into his jacket pocket.]

If you're feeling clueless, I suppose that means I've my work cut out for me, hmm?

[beseeched]

It's all still pretty unbelievable. I took my time to, y'know, wrap my head around it but it's still a pretty large concept to grasp.

[demolitionman]

Which part? That some wealthy benefactor puts up thousands in a secret castle in exchange for their services saving the world? Or--

Actually, I assume you mean that one.

[beseeched]

[Jimmy likes this guy, he gets right to the point, so he doesn't waste any time smiling in response to the whole scenario. The one he's still trying to wrap his head around.] That'd be the one.

[demolitionman]

There comes a point where you have to stop questioning it, or you'll drive yourself nuts. I've never seen anything to make me believe there's something shady behind it all, if that helps.

[beseeched]

It does. Maybe I should just let it go, but I'm not used to there not being a catch. [If you know what he means.]

[demolitionman]

I take it you've been screwed over before? Though I guess most of us have. At least those of us who had lives we remember before this place.

[beseeched]

Yeah, big time. It's not a big deal I just don't take things at face value anymore because of it.

[demolitionman]

Beats the alternative, if you ask me.

I'd rather have a man around who questions things.

[beseeched]

Well, that's what you're getting. Maybe I'm not 100% on board yet.

[demolitionman]

Well, that's what the squiring's all about anyway. To figure out if you're a good fit.

[beseeched]

I'm a good fit.

[He doesn't have doubts about that. It might be cocky to assume, but he's all about saving people.]

I just have my doubts. Last time I entered into an agreement about helping people it didn't really work out in my favor.

[demolitionman]

Nothing you want to talk about, I suppose.

[beseeched]

Not especially.

[There's a wry smile.]

I have a feeling we'll be spending a lot of time together so... rain check.

[demolitionman]

That sort of depends on you. How many questions you have, how much assistance you're looking for...

[beseeched]

I've never really done this kind of thing before. I could use some demonstration.

[Obviously he was green and he didn't want to be forever.]

[demolitionman]

Well, you'll get plenty of that in the field. So your best use of your time here is to learn from everyone about how to be of use out there.

You have any combat experience?

[beseeched]

I guess thinking I could be talked through it was too good to be true.

[He's starting to feel like he's less suited for this job than he thought.]

No, but I can take a beating.

[demolitionman]

Don't worry, you're not the only one. I'd never held a gun until I came here, and you should have seen my face when they told me they expected me to use one.

But things can get hairy out there, and it's better to be prepared just in case. If that's where you feel weakest, it's where you should train first.

[beseeched]

I've never held a gun. I can see how that'd be jarring, yeah.

[He's been shot by one though. He doesn't want to mention it.]
