It's probably a very good thing that Gold sweet-talked them a car in the nearby tiny Scottish village of Oakhurst, because it is freezing cold out and snow blankets almost everything around. Walking the seven miles up the Old Road to the ruins would be a bitch and a half.

Instead, they comfortably drove past rocky downs, near stands of old-growth oak covered in snow, and past two farms that looked abandoned. No other travelers were visible on the lonely road, which finally curves, passing east of a narrow ravine. Belle signals for them to pull over here, where, at the road's closest approach to the cleft, several broken pillars jut from the earth where the ravine widens and opens into something akin to more of a deep, but narrow, cavern. Two of the pillars stand straight, but most of them lean against the sloped earth. Others are broken and several have apparently fallen into the darkness-shrouded depths. A few similar pillars are visible on the opposite side of the ravine.

[ the first thing out of lila's mouth as she hurriedly steps back is a shriek, but she quickly gets ahold of herself (will save 16). ]

Yeah, we've got a welcoming committee!

[Yeah screw this waiting around thing. Hook moves fastest, dropping the grapple gun and hurrying down the rope. He's not particularly graceful at it (climb 3) but he manages to make his way to the bottom.]

[MILAH DOES NOT LIKE THIS. She moves behind Lila and snaps at one of the beasts (atk nat 20, dmg 16.]

[ yeahhh boi, milah bites into one of the things... and feasts on three foot long dire rat. that one is very dead. ]

[bittersweeter]

[ lila manages to pull her gun out and skitter back another step, bringing it up to bear but she can't get a shot off yet. ] Welcoming committee in the shape of R.O.U.Ses!

[uncurse]

[ emma's quick to slide down the rope, speedy but controlled (climb 14), and she pulls her gun once she reaches the bottom. ]

[Gold awkwardly slides down the rope (climb 11) and bitterly regrets deciding it was a great idea to go spelunking with a bum ankle, because eesh. Close quarters means no setting things on fire right now and Milah's got this, so he stands near the rope and waits for Belle.]

They certainly wasted no time.

[ The rat has so many tasty options in front of it now as Gold, Hook, and Emma all land right in front of it. Gold looks the gimpiest so it tries to take a chomp out of him. But crit fails. And bites his cane instead, breaking his front teeth off. Yep.

Belle tries to climb down the rope too fast and nearly slides off it entirely, just managing to catch herself about 30 feet down it, eyes wide. (climb check... 2) Clinging to the rope for dear life and not seeing much room down below to land, she instead takes her flashlight off her belt and starts turning it rapidly on and off to try to distract the thing (Trick 11), but it doesn't react because it's too busy bemoaning its lost front teeth.

A third rat darts out and tries to bite Hook in the leg (atk 12), but he easily has time to avoid it. ]

[Hook slides his weapon free of his sheathe as he moves his leg away, then slashes his hook across the thing's back (atk 17, dmg 5) before coming in to stab at it with his rapier (atk 15, dmg 6).]

I think their warnings may have been a bit overstated.

[Milah could go for the rat by her master, but there's two humans over there and she's hungry, so excuse her while she chomps up the dying rat near Hook.

[ now that her gun is free, lila edges around milah's afternoon snack, aims and fires at one of the remaining rats. (atk 25, dmg 11) ]

[Well, now that the beast is dead, Gold, worried not one bit about the teeth marks on his cane, stands under the rope and looks up.] Are you all right, Belle?

[Yeah, that's where his priorities are rn.]

Yes, I just... I just slipped. [ to prove as much, she climbs down the rest of the rope easily (climb 17), to land right beside him with a small smile that melts when she sees milah happily munching on the rats. ] They probably just ... live down here.

[bittersweeter]

[ with the toe of her boot, she prods one of the rats, nose wrinkling in disgust. ] And I thought the rats in Carney were huge... there's a staircase. For the rest. [ her hand, or rather the gun, waves in the direction of the staircase she saw before the rats made their debut. ]

I think we'll call this mission a success if oversized rats are the only thing we run into. [ she grimaces at milah, but turns to start down the staircase without further comment. ]

[Hook follows closely, giving the rats a distasteful look.]

Still, they're hardly a good front line of defense.

As I said, I don't think they were part of the defenses. I think they're just scavengers that thrive down here in the dark. [ she heads down the ill-made steps behind hook, flashlight up to scan the darkness around them ]

The real problems come later, when we're farther away from the surface. [Gold falls into step behind Belle.]

[bittersweeter]

[ cough balrog cough. lila is the caboose, sort of, setting off after gold and deciding to just keep her weapon drawn for now because, well because she likes it. ]

What kind of defenses would goblins even have?

[uncurse]

I don't know. Maybe ... traps, or some kind of magic? [ she pulls out her flashlight to replace the glowstick with some better range, keeping it trained on the staircase for the most part, but occasionally flitting it around to get a sense of their surroundings and make sure they aren't walking straight into one of said traps (spot 25). ]

[ all is quiet, though a cold breeze blows up from below, bringing with it the scent of dust and a faint trace of rot. they cut back and forth across the narrow steps until they finally empty into a small courtyard, apparently the top of what was once the crenelated battlement of the top of a fortress... which is where they have landed, as a few sweeps of multiple flashlights across the expanse reveals. the subterranean citadel, though impressive, seems long forgotten, if the lightless windows, cracked crenelations, and leaning towers are any indication. the buried citadel is sunk so far in the earth that the battlement making up the 'courtyard' is now level with the surrounding cavern floor.

that cavern floor stretches away to the north and south along the length of the citadel's sides, but it appears composed of a layer of treacherous, crumbled masonry which reaches to an unknown depth. to the west, across the battlement looms the surviving structure, and a wooden door that enters into a tower. they each spill off the steps to get a better look. ]

... I wonder if this entire citadel fell through the Veil right in the middle of the earth here.

...Does that happen often?

[His ship was an impressive enough drop. An entire building seems insane.]

Likely not to this extent. By all rights, it should just be a pile of rocks.

[Gold keeps moving forward while Milah brings up the rear of the line behind Lila, fresh blood on her jaws.]

[ belle sweeps her flashlight left and right as they cross the courtyard. ] It's not unheard of for buildings to fall through - or even entire villages. But it's very rare that they don't land on the surface. As far as we know, I suppose. [ and it's emma who sees the outline of a square on the floor of the battlement... right in front of that wooden door. ]

[uncurse]

Well, however common it is - I think I see our way in. [ she shines her flashlight along the wooden door, and then pointedly on the square beneath it. ] That, or a trap. You seeing what I'm seeing?
