The "afterparty" is the real main event of the night at every squiring, but tonight's party is a little different than usual - Faith has successfully lobbied (as in roped people into helping her decorate for) a Chinese New Year's party, or Lunar New Year, theme. With Knights from all over the world, it was easy to get input from those who traditionally celebrate the holiday, and Wynn is all about the spirit of cultural unity. Not to mention, the second of the 15 days of the spring festival is all about spending time with one's family and friends.

The lavish, opulent ballroom has been transformed, filled with red lanterns, peach blossoms, kumquat plants, and chrysanthemums. People are encouraged to dress in red to ward off evil spirits and bad luck, and avail themselves of the New Year's Cake, golden champagne cocktail, rice pudding, candied fruits, and the Tray of Togetherness.

As always, it is every new Knight's chance to mingle and meet some of their new brothers in arms. Of course, a couple hours are provided following the ceremony for everyone to change, do hair and makeup, and choose from the vast array of formal attire in the closets of the balcony "dressing rooms" located at the top of spiraled staircases on either side of the ballroom. A separate dressing room exists for men and women, and they include full bathrooms (with, thankfully, very modern plumbing).
The squires are usually among the last to arrive, and the ballroom is full to the brim with a fancy array of people, of all shapes, sizes and species.

[Kate notices her standing alone, and quietly weaves her way through the crowd to introduce herself. She's taking the time to get to know the other knights when she can, and Tia is an unfamiliar face.]

I love your dress.

[ tia looks up abruptly from her phone, distracted, and her frown melts into a polite little smile ] Oh! Thank you, that's very kind of you. It's Kate, isn't it?

[She nods.]

Kate Beckett. It's nice to meet you, Sir ... ?

You can call me Tia.

Tia. Nice to meet you.

[ her phone buzzes again and she glances down at a text message, frowning deeply once more, before hitting it off and forcing another smile ] Sorry about that. It seems we can't escape bad news even when we're trying to unwind, in this life.

[She frowns at that.]

I'm sorry to hear it.

[And as much as her instincts tell her needle, she does her best to hold it back.]

Not your fault. [ she raises her chin with a defiant smile ] I could use some more alcohol. Could you?

I could actually, if you don't mind company.

Drinking alone isn't quite my style.

Mine either. Tends to be a bit depressing.

And if teaching kindergarten didn't drive me to it, I don't think anything here could.

[She smiles a bit at that, tipping her head to the side.]

You used to be a teacher? Or you still do?

Used to. I know some people manage the whole double lifestyle just fine, but for me it's always been... in or out. [ sigh ] Even if sometimes I haven't been able to make up my mind on which is best.

Sometimes it's easier. Not to have to make sure your stories are straight.

[She knows that just from being Shadowkind. You need to have your story straight when it's all lies anyway.]

I take it you know the feeling.

[She shrugs.]

Staying under the radar when you're Shadowkind is easier when you're human, but that doesn't mean it's easy. Sometimes people like to look a lot closer than you'd prefer.

There are some people who don't want to believe that there's such a thing as a real 'human' from outside this world.

Yeah, those people kind of suck.

[At least she tells it like it is?]

But unfortunately, there'll probably always be a few.

[She nods.]

Some people don't know how to handle something different.

Or they don't want to know how. Willing ignorance is the worst kind.

[She nods in agreement.]

Some people are just too lazy to open their eyes.

I don't know that it's always laziness...

Some of it is. Some of it is stubborn determination. The lazy ones are always easier to deal with. It usually comes with a side of stupid.
