The "afterparty" is the real main event of the night at every squiring, but tonight's party is a little different than usual - Faith has successfully lobbied (as in roped people into helping her decorate for) a Chinese New Year's party, or Lunar New Year, theme. With Knights from all over the world, it was easy to get input from those who traditionally celebrate the holiday, and Wynn is all about the spirit of cultural unity. Not to mention, the second of the 15 days of the spring festival is all about spending time with one's family and friends.

The lavish, opulent ballroom has been transformed, filled with red lanterns, peach blossoms, kumquat plants, and chrysanthemums. People are encouraged to dress in red to ward off evil spirits and bad luck, and avail themselves of the New Year's Cake, golden champagne cocktail, rice pudding, candied fruits, and the Tray of Togetherness.

As always, it is every new Knight's chance to mingle and meet some of their new brothers in arms. Of course, a couple hours are provided following the ceremony for everyone to change, do hair and makeup, and choose from the vast array of formal attire in the closets of the balcony "dressing rooms" located at the top of spiraled staircases on either side of the ballroom. A separate dressing room exists for men and women, and they include full bathrooms (with, thankfully, very modern plumbing).
The squires are usually among the last to arrive, and the ballroom is full to the brim with a fancy array of people, of all shapes, sizes and species.

I've got a good bottle I was saving for a special occasion in my room. A good story seems right enough for that.

Thoster brings Hook to his room, which is the same one he's had since he was a squire. Look, it has a mirror on the ceiling above his bed. You should not feel any less uncomfortable coming here, Hook.

Moving immediately to the dresser, he fetches the bottle and opens it, pouring two hefty glasses and gestures for Hook to sit in one of the two chairs.]

So tell me about this adventure of yours.

It was Gold's idea. [And he doesn't sound nearly as uncomfortable with that as he could (bluff 25). He doesn't like Gold. But he still can't remember the root of their fight and they have... worked together. He should be over it.] A magical apple that can heal any ill and break any curse. Convenient, isn't it?

The one with the crocodile? Useful man, that one. [Not because of the crocodile, but they talked. Also Thoster's sense motive was abysmal.]

Seems like the sort of fruit that might be useful to have around, aye. Just what curse were you lot looking to lift?

Useful? Perhaps. [Closest thing to a compliment he'll give about Gold. He scratches his hook against his sleeve, almost unconsciously pressing against the tattoo on his arm. Milah. The woman he forgot. The woman Gold murdered.

But that's not the point right now.]

A love curse. The Lady Amara has been bewitched to love Sir Charming. David's left til she can be cured of it so as to avoid temptation. We're hoping to save them both.

The part I'm still lost on is why you lot left this matter to be unofficial. Seems a bit dangerous, doesn't it? None of us know would have known where you ran off to if things had gone wrong.

[Hook shrugs.] Would have taken too much time. I had a ship and a team all ready to go. Why bother with all the paperwork?

A man of initiative, I like it. Must have been nice to have your ship on open water again.

Aye, and see she sails as well as ever. [He'd had his doubts, magic being what it is. But the Jolly Roger is back in working order, and he's bloody pleased about it.] Perhaps it would have been wise to at least leave a note mentioning where I was going. Or use those... phones.

I got my start by running off to join a crew without really thinking it through. Sometimes adventure has nothing to do with the wise choices. So tell me what you found. I take it this apple was not so easily found.

Not remotely. Had to fight off all sorts of nasties in order to get it. Bugbears and giant rats and even some animated skeletons. [He shrugs, like it's no big deal.] But what sort of adventure is easy?

It's a shame I couldn't go with you. Sounds like you had all the fun. [He may or may not be crafting a song in his head right now.] But tell me- did you find it? Did you find the apple that you sought?

[Hook shakes his head, face falling.] We found the tree. But the price was too high. I'll give up a lot of things to help a friend, but the freedom of myself or one of my companions? Not an option.

Sounding more like a knight than a pirate.

Perhaps. Or perhaps I'm simply both. [He sticks his hand into his pocket and pulls out a handful of gold coins.] I did bring back some souvenirs.

A man after my own heart. But tell me- what was it that happened out there?

The tree that bore the fruit was protected by a Druid. He said he'd give the apple in exchange for two supplicants. Two humans that the tree would... control, I suppose. He'd take away everything human about them and turn them into mindless slaves to protect the tree.

And if that weren't bad enough, the fruit itself was meant to send seeds out to colonize the surface.

[Hook shrugs nonchalantly.]

So I shot him.

Never an easy choice, no matter what sort of monster a man might be. Glad to hear you didn't hesitate in the face of it, though. [He looks as though something weighs heavy on him.]

How are you liking it here, the job suiting you well?

Well enough. Not nearly enough time spent on the open sea, but it seems pirating isn't what it used to be. [And then again, neither is Hook.] And I'd be lying if I said I hated playing the hero for once.

You've taken to it, I'll give you that. I doubt the likes of us could ever say we've ha enough time on the water, but there are parts that make up for the loss.

[He nods, looking thoughtful.]

For what it's worth, I'm proud of yah, friend. Sounds like you had your share of adventure out there, even if you might not have gotten the intended result. [He reaches over and places a firm hand to the man's shoulder.] You've come a long way since joining up.

[That gets a grin out of Hook, though it's a small one.]

That mean I get to be a real knight now?

Aye, I think it might. I'll come find you once I know just how to set this right. We'll have some things to talk about.

...if you say so, mate. [Hook thought all it took was Thoster's word, but then again, he's never been knighted before. Thoster would know better.]
