It's that time again. New squires would have heard the word come 'round that there would be open weapons orientation this Tuesday- which is also open to anyone who just wants to come spar with the newbies as well. As before, at the top of the main staircase is the entrance to an incredibly spacious room, that has gym and weight training equipment on the wall near the door, and then lots of old school training dummies and more at the far end. A glass door enters into a firing range, and another pair of large doors on the farthest wall lead to the armory.

Sir Carpenter waits over by the firing range door, arms folded. Red-headed Sir Ironsides hefts an axe over his shoulder and offers a boisterous greeting to those approaching, and Fred helps round people up to the middle of the room.

Some of the squires' mentor Knights will have accompanied them - others will have left them to their own devices. Everyone's welcome to tag into threads or make their own!

[Honestly, David doesn't mind teaching her. Everyone should know how to protect themselves in a basic way, whether the have magic or not. Following her lead over to one of the circles, he tips his head towards the line of weapons on the wall.]

What do you want to start with?

[ HAHA YOU'RE SO CUTE THAT YOU THINK SHE HAS ANY CLUE. ] I don't... I don't know?

[He's slightly amused.]

Is there anything you've used before?

[ she shakes her head. ] Only a stake, but I wasn't very good at it. And I missed the first go.

[generaldavideus]

[he nods slowly, looking over the weapons wall for a moment, before going with one of the staffs. It's not sharp so she can't stab him (even if she can heal him) and being a two handed weapon, it's easier to use to put distance between him and her.]

Let's start with this then.

Okay. [ she holds the staff gingerly, and very novicely, but with a firmness that shows how eager she is to learn. if apprehensive because she really doesn't like causing people pain and she feels like her inexpertise might be more dangerous than how she'll manage once she learns. ] Now what?

[He steps forward to adjust her grip and the spacing of her hands as he does.]

The good thing about a quarterstaff is that you can use two hands to steady yourself. It gives you more control.

[Once her hands are positioned properly, he takes a step back and picks up his own.]

You can also use it to block more easily.

Block... how? [ she is made of nerves. ]

[he pauses for a moment before moving behind her placing his hands on the staff on either side of her hands.]

It depends on which direction your opponent is coming at her. If I were swinging down towards your head, you'd want to bring it up like this -

[He raises their arms gently so that she's holding the staff level with her head.]

[ OH HEY DAVID YOU'RE REALLY CLOSE. not that she minds because she trusts him almost implicitly because he just strikes her as trustworthy. but he's very tall and strong and handsome and she's a teenager. give her a second.

she nods, making a note of where her arms are and how it feels. ] Okay.

[He nods, and waits for her to adjust, before bringing it back to center and then turning to the left, shifting so that the staff is straight up and down.]

It's a lot more versatile than some weapons, because it can be both defensive and offensive. You can block, and then turn and attack in the same motion.

[He'll even demonstrate with the way the staff currently is, twisting their arms up so that the staff is then swinging forward.]

And there's a lot more control than a sword, since you can use two hands.

Alright. [ she seems a little dubious of this control he speaks of, but she's willing to keep giving him the benefit of the doubt. he knows better than she does. ] Swords just seem very straight forward.

[ which she's only gleaned from watching the people in the training room, usually people that were masters at swords.

basically she has no idea what she's talking about. ]

In some ways they are. You point and you stab, but it can be hard to balance.

[he pauses before moving out from behind her and heading towards the swords. He picks up a few, checking the balance for a moment, before finding one that would be a good weight for her. He then turns and hands it back to her.]

Try holding this to see the difference.

[ setting the staff aside she picks up the sword. and immediately her arm falls because that was so much heavier than expected. (str 2. yup) ]

Oh. Wow. Yeah, I see why you didn't pick this first.

[generaldavideus]

[David nods as he reaches to take it from her again, returning it to it's rightful place.]

Start with the staff first, and once you get a handle on that, we'll work on a sword.

Okay. [ she picks up the staff again and while she is still obviously a novice, she doesn't look at hesitant, as if the mere ability to hold it properly gave her a boost in self-esteem. SHE CAN DO THIS. ]

Okay.

[He takes a breath and is just going to handwave the rolling for initiative in favor of letting Lissa go first.]
