The "afterparty" is rumored to be the real main event of the night. A black-tie affair in the lavish, opulent ballroom, it is every new Knight's chance to mingle and meet some of their new brothers in arms. Of course, a couple hours are provided following the ceremony for everyone to change, do hair and makeup, and choose from the vast array of formal attire in the closets of the balcony "dressing rooms" located at the top of spiraled staircases on either side of the ballroom. A separate dressing room exists for men and women, and they include full bathrooms (with, thankfully, very modern plumbing).

The squires are usually among the last to arrive, and the ballroom is full to the brim with a fancy array of people, of all shapes, sizes and species.

Hope you aren't shy. They're all here to meet you.

Feel free to make your own open threads for people to come congratulate your newly pledged knight.

ooc; also if your Knight wants to get all gussied up, you can make a Disguise (Cha) check for how good they were at hair/makeup/stylin', etc! This goes for... any time.

Waaaaay more Finnick than Kat. When I start calling people "Fuddy-Duddy" then you can assume I'm well and proper drunk. Stop deflecting.

Okay, fine. You ever think it's maybe more complicated than the age thing.

[The age thing is a tiny, tiny part of it, Vi. Thackery Binx did not care that he was going to outlive the world as a cat.]

Oh no, gee, it never occurred to me there was more to you than age. [ she makes a face at him. ] That's part of it, though, isn't it?

What? That everyone I know is gonna die? Yeah. That's part of it. But I've had years to get used to that. That's normal around here. [He shrugs.] And why I tend to stick to Shadowkind when it comes to the people I do keep close.

[A sigh.] But given what you're going through right now, it's easy for you to grasp that it's a bitch to get close to people when you don't think you're worth the time.

Why would you think that? [ like, man, she thinks he's a dick but she wouldn't go that far. then again, des never really got to meet her before life sucked. she thinks everyone is worth the time. (except, of course, herself, but that is not a new development, that's growing up without a parent.) ]

[He's quiet for a moment and then he lowers his voice.] Because people who spend every waking moment wishing they were dead don't make the best bosom buddies.

And yet you've wound up with friends anyway.

Best laid plans. Like I said, I've got a lot of reasons to do it, but that don't stop it from happening. And in the end, someone always ends up getting hurt.

Yeah, and someone's gonna wind up hurt when you keep us away, too. People get hurt. That's life. It's delicate and precarious and it's only worth living if you have things around you worth living for. [ she's probably done with her spiel now since that was her only point. ]

So they tell me.

[He pauses and then he steps closer, looking mildly uncomfortable.] Level with me here, Vi. I know bringing it up makes you twitch, but just... think about it. You spend a lot of time not being able to think of anything other than Keijen and his nightmare god relative. And you probably spend a hell of a lot of time wondering what would happen if they played dirty and went after someone you love. And worst of all? I bet you've probably thought of how much it would kill you to see the look on everyone's faces if you just gave in to whatever they want. It wouldn't matter how good the reasons were or that it was your choice, because no one would ever really get it.

[He drops his eyes.] That's what it's like for me, because that's how it's always been since I got cursed. I'm just used to it by now, but just because it gets easier doesn't mean I stop wishing I didn't have to worry about so many people getting caught in the crossfire of my bullshit.

[graveflowers]

Des, we're already caught in it. And they're caught in mine. Blade and his gang are always going after someone I love because we're the ones fighting back, we're always the ones fighting back. And if they're focused on us and it stops them from going after anyone else, then it's worth it. [ she had been listening to gar, back in chicago, as unresponsive as she had been. ] Yeah, I hate this. I wake up every morning upset that I actually woke up because I have to go through another day of this, another night of nightmares. But if he's bothering me, then that aspect of him can't bug anyone else -- if he's focused on me, he can't torture my family. It may be killing me, but if it's saving them from the same fate..?

[ she swallows and sighs immediately afterward. ] I would give up. If it was just me, I would have given up months ago. But then they might go after Myri for her power or Elena for hers. If existing through this makes them think they still have a hook... I'm not gonna save the world with this. [ she holds out her hand and a tiny white blossom sprouts in her palm, roots twisting around her fingers. ] But I can save them from torture because of it.

[nothingsodivine]

You're a sweet kid, Vi.

[He chuckles and runs a hand through his hair.] But it's because your monsters are different than mine that I can't stick around when it's over. If you get rid of these ones, do you really want more?

Some things are worth the monsters, old man. [ reaching forward, she tucks the flower against the collar of his leather jacket before she turns and walks off. last word, bitch, she's taking it. ]
