WHO || Wynn, Tia, Val'drin, Francesca, Helen, Eric, Lila [Closed]
WHAT || Counterstrike Mission Briefing
WHERE || Knights HQ, the briefing room
WHEN || April 2nd, shortly before 10am [forwarddated]
HOW || Actionspam. Single thread, don't worry about maintaining tagging order.
There isn't much warning at all that this briefing is about to occur. In fact, they're told to come 'immediately' rather than given a time. Instead of being directed to come to the Round Table, however, they are instructed to meet at the downtown London Headquarters. For those who haven't yet been there, the main lobby area boasts an impressive silver dragon statue, about seven feet tall, immediately to the right of the entrance. The room is done in comforting wood and mahogany tones, and there's an array of tables and chairs across the room to the right, as well as a small piano. Statues of King Arthur and Lancelot flank the hallway that continues straight beyond the lobby, and there's a staircase leading up, with wooden dragon-shaped banisters, immediately beyond the bathroom door to the right.
On the left are two doors, and one of them leads into a room which also has a small reception window open, where they are received Between the doors hangs an ornate blue and silver tapestry with even more dragon imagery. It is an exercise in subtlety all around.
The woman working reception directs them each to head up the steps to the third floor, head to the end of the hall and take a right to the holo-room.
Yeah, that's right. They have a holo-room.
Walking in, it's possible to find Wynn staring into the round holographic table, which casts an eerie light on his very very grim features. He leans forward, with Tia and Eric casting looks at each other behind his back, obviously just as worried about... whatever this is.

A very serious situation has come to our attention this morning.
[ and he clicks 'play', prompting a video to begin. the image on the screen shows the head and shoulders of a heavyset young man in green fatigues, a black ski mask, and gloves. it is unclear where the video was shot, but it was clearly done indoors under fluorescent lighting.
"Gentleman and ladies," the man begins. "At approximately 8:00 this morning, armed associates of mine forcibly entered the residence of Professor Grant Peterson, taking him, his wife, and a house full of guests hostage.
"If you have not met our demands by 11:30, my associates will shoot Professor Peterson. At the stroke of every hour thereafter that our demands go unmet, they will shoot another hostage. I hope I make myself clear.
"Our demands are that you deliver the following to the Peterson residence. First, a black nylon backpack containing $10 million in unmarked, nonsequential one-hundred-dollar bills. Second, an identical black nylon backpack containing the original manuscript of Die Handgeheimnisse. Please do not think to substitute a forgery or reproduction. My associates and I know how to identify the genuine article. Third, and finally, a fully fueled Bell model 212 helicopter. Instruct the pilot to land on the roof, leave the engine idling, disembark, and take the stairs down to the ground floor. We will not be needing his services for departure.
"I urge you to treat this matter with the utmost gravity. Our terms are quite non-negotiable and my associates understand their assignment perfectly.
"Good evening."
the screen flickers momentarily, then the image cuts to two men in a large, marble-floored room that looks like an opulent foyer. one of them, a middle aged gentleman dressed in a jacket and tie, is being held in a headlock by another man dressed like the one who delivered the demands. those who have been knights for some time are likely to recognize him: grant peterson is a knight himself, a prominent member of the dragon's hoard who acts as curator for many of the knighthood's property archives. he's considered one of the most knowledgeable people on the planet in areas ranging from antiquarian books to xenobiological models - and has worked with helen quite closely on the latter. those who knows him would also know that he lives in a private penthouse home with his wife audrey, rather than at the castle.
"Help," he says, his voice hoarse and strained, as though he's having trouble breathing through the other's grip. "They're serious. They haven't--"
the tape ends abruptly. a spot check of 10+ can notice the two portions of the tape were shot in 2 very different locations. ]
The book. Does that mean anything to you? [ wynn looks grimly over at val'drin who is frowning. ]

Hang on... They've pieced this together somehow. It's not all filmed in the same place.

We've identified the man making the threats at Peter Jayson, a member of an occult group known as the Children of Chaos. [ a grid appears over his face as the video backs up, and facial recognition runs over it, prompting a MATCH and pulling up information about Jayson. ] The organization's leader is a man named Nicholas St. Andrew, a known con artist with a talent for skirting the law. [ he pulls up a pic of St. Andrew as well, along with his wrap sheet ] He's been charged with more than a dozen counts of fraud, petty theft, and forgery, but he was convicted in only about half the cases. In the past, he has taken money and property primarily from wealthy individuals who have shown an inclination to work around the borders of the law - the sort who use questionable tax practices, run sweatshops, and have other reasons for not maintaining strong ties to law enforcement agencies.
This time, however, he has targeted us. [ he face grows grimmer as he stares at the man, hard lines in his expression. ]

Sir Carpenter will be filling the role of tactical leader for this operation, while Sir Francesca will be in charge of all non-combat decisions as mission leader.
The penthouse occupies the entire top floor of the Howard Arms apartment building. The penthouse has a small balcony running along parts of the south and east walls, while the lower floors have only fire escapes.
By the time we sent observers to look into the apartment, the captors had pulled the blinds and curtains on every window. No one has been reported coming out on to the balcony.

Any idea exactly how many men we'll be facing inside the complex?

[ the knight from the desk below bursts into the meeting room. "It's everywhere," she says, and wynn seems to know immediately what she's talking about, frowning deeply as he presses a button.
the screen changes to a local TV station, the image that of the commando from the video just played in this room. commentary from a somber newscaster follows the end of the message.
"This tape was delivered to our studies mere moments ago. Allegedly, it is a duplocate of one sent to a local investigative agency. Professor Grant Peterson resides in the penthouse of the Howard Arms apartment building. We take you now to the News 5 helicopter, which is circling the structure. Local police are on the scene assessing the situation."
wynn flicks through, and finds every local channel carrying a similar report, his expression darkening more with each one. ] St. Andrew wants this as public as possible.

Although the Howard Arms has three elevators, only the central one goes up to the penthouse. It opens onto a building-wide hallway directly across from the main entrance to the Peterson residence. At either end of the hallway, a staircase leads down to the ground floor. Each stairwell also features a door - locked, most likely - that safeguards stairs leading up to the roof.
Across from each stairwell is another locked door. The eastern one leads to Grant Peterson's home office. Our records show a reception area, two small offices, two meeting rooms - one with no windows, and one with a view of the skyline - and Grant's large office, which provides access to the balcony.
The western door is another entrance into Peterson's residence.

No, we'll have to expect them to at least be surrounding and monitoring the building.

I agree. I think it's our best bet for avoiding too much extra attention from the captors, as well as the news crews outside the building.
