[Classy really wasn't Ric's thing. Sure, he could pull it off when he wasn't spilling liquor down the front of his pants and acting like a drunken mess, but he would have been much more comfortable in a less formal setting.
This was a big deal for Elena though, so he was willing to step outside of his comfort zone in show of his support.
