Unlike the grandiose nature of the squiring ceremony each Knight undergoes upon their initial entrance into the Knighthood, the graduation to Full Knight status takes place in a much more intimate affair, between the Knight, their mentor, invited friends, and the members of the sect to which they will be inducted. There's no pompous music, no stolid rank and file, no elaborate march.

Myri, Wynn, and Koraith wait up at the front of the room for Elena to approach them, but the attitude of the ceremony is much more relaxed, full of smiles and light conversation on all sides. Of course, when Wynn speaks, people still hush. It's just how he rolls.

"Sir Elena Gilbert, please kneel."

[Classy really wasn't Ric's thing. Sure, he could pull it off when he wasn't spilling liquor down the front of his pants and acting like a drunken mess, but he would have been much more comfortable in a less formal setting.

This was a big deal for Elena though, so he was willing to step outside of his comfort zone in show of his support. He was even limiting his alcohol intake to keep from repeating the scenario described above. That didn't mean he wasn't drinking lbr, but he was being responsible about it for a change.]

[Wow he could have done without the reminder. But it was good to know that people hadn't forgotten that hot mess of an arrival despite his best efforts to convince himself otherwise.]

Violet, right? [Hey, it was a pretty name and not nearly as common as you'd think. Sure, he was slightly drunk when they met, but no one said Ric wasn't a functioning alcoholic.]

Oh, right, I remember now. [ so, so clearly. YOURE LUCKY SHE JUST MENTIONED THE SPILLED DRINK AND NOT THAT YOUR FLY WAS DOWN. ] Nice to meet you again, Ric.

Likewise. [And when he wasn't sporting half his drink down the front of his unzipped pants. At least he could find the humor in it in hindsight.]

So are you a friend of Elena's? [He probably already knew given how often Elena texted him to keep him in the loop while she was away, but he preferred not to lead with the Elena's told me all about you card.]

Yeah, tell me about it. [He glances over toward where Elena's mingling with some of the other guests. She looks happy. That was all that matters to him.]

Is this the same sect you're in? [He tends to gravitate toward the Dragon's Hoard, so he was a little out of his element here.]

Nope, still a squire, but I'll be headed for the Dragon's Light. [ and if she sounds uncertain about that it's because she still is. ] I am not good with the words and diplomacy and the whole thinking before I speak thing.

[He's actually less offended than you might think. It's the question that gives him pause more than anything. His relationship with Elena had been complicated before coming here. Now? He wasn't even sure how he was supposed to define it.]

Alaric. Most people call me Ric. I'm a friend of Elena's. [Well, no shit. But it was definitely the easiest way to answer her.]

She was in my history class. [Look he has no idea what, if anything, Elena has told these people about him or what she'd be comfortable with them knowing of their convoluted as fuck relationship, so he is just going to downplay it until he hears otherwise.]

It went a little deeper than that. [Oh, Ric. You are not helping matters and Kat is really not the one you want to be giving that particular impression.]

[ yeah her entire expression darkens. watch your dick, alaric. ] Just how deep are we talking?

[The sudden shift in her expression combined with the interrogation style questioning knocks some realization into him (wisdom 19). There really was no way for him to answer that without skirting the issue to maintain Elena's privacy, and perpetuating whatever this girl was already assuming about him.]

I was taking care of her and her little brother for a while after their aunt died.
