The briefing was simple and direct: a string of disappearing Shadowkind centered around a small farming town in Wales. The Karthur Institute wasn't called in until the local authorities got reports of incessant, blood-curdling screams coming from a barn just past the edge of town. They found a girl curled in the corner there, screaming her lungs out, shaking, and looking like she'd been running around the forest alone for days.

They also found the five bodies of their missing townspeople in the barn.

They tell the knights (and thus, Wynn tells them) that the girl is in police custody, but they don't tell them that she's pinned in a cell. They've fed her and given her a coat by now, but the deputy is quick to alert Helen, Rose, Sydney, and Alaric as they arrive of the bad news.

"She hasn't shut up since we put her in there." He glances back over his shoulder, toward the lock-up. "Not screamin', just wanting to know who they were." He looks back at the knights, grim. "Don't think she's got any idea how she got out there. I don't have it in me to tell her I don't either; wherever she's rom, it inn't Pembrokeshire."

[helen gives a nod, more for Ric than for the cop. They're not in good enough shape to run. And they wouldn't know where to go yet even if they did escape. They need to find this grand wizard. And right now they're best bet is to play along.]

[No complaints here unless they're going to be taken to some sodomy basement like this is Pulp Fiction idek. But Alaric is in follow mode he would like some medical attention pls.]

[ He will be attempting to shuffle them into the back of his car while Officer Amy moves to wrangle up Eddy in another car. ]

[Helen gets in, scooting over to make room for Ric. It's not ideal, but they need to regroup and come up with a plan.]

How bad is it? [She says to Ric quietly, reaching out to have a look for herself even as she's asking the question.]

Could be worse. [He could be dead rn. He don't sound too thrilled tho.

But he will show off his lovely flesh wounds to Helen idk gurl it was a shotgun that like took him from decent hit points to like almost five so it's probably not very pretty.]

Should we be trusting these people? [Like, I'm sorry but Eddie ran for a reason and he knew that the girls were with the Grand Fucking Wizard. Alaric was not exactly ready to take officer trigger happy or officer incompetent's word for anything.]

Likely not. [Just telling it like it is.] But we need to get you sewn up and possibly get some more information on the state of things in this bloody backwards town. It's our best chance of sorting out where this wizard is and where the girls are.

[ Well since he can HEAR THEM TALKING FROM THE FRONT SEAT, officer incompetent will just join the conversation. ]

You wanna tell me what the hell went on back there?

[ Inscrutable, he watches them in the rear view mirror a moment, then looks back out to take note of how Eddie and Amy are doing as he starts pulling the car around towards the station. ]

[asdkjg I assumed they'd have a hot second to talk between the time it took Officer Incompetent to shuffle them into the car and then waddle his ass into the driver's seat but I guess he is The Flash whoops.]

Someone abducted our friends, and since that asshole decided to flee the scene at about eighty miles per hour, it only made sense to follow him.

[So done. But he's all shot up so you'll have to fucking excuse his lack of civility atm.]

[Helen reaches over to gently touch Ric's knee, understanding exactly why he's so quick to anger, but knowing that they need to be cautious with how they move forward now that they've lost the upperhand.]

The two women we were with and the girl you had found- all of them were abducted within the Casey's store or somewhere behind it. Your friend with the van told us that he knows who took them but not where to find the culprit. All we want is to get our people back and see that poor girl set right in this world. If you help us find them, we'll be out of your hair for good. [Diplomacy 33]

[ He seems reluctant to believe it, but a sense motive 15+ can identify that it's more out of an emotional place than a logical one. The facts appear undeniable now that he's in the car with them, and he starts it up to get them back to the station. ]

Once your friend's seen a doctor, we can head on over to Amy and Eddie's place and take a look. They live with their family just a couple miles up the road.

Drop me off if you have to. We've wasted enough time already. Especially if Eddie and Amy [Or maybe just Amy since Eddie was lights the fuck out] are going to be heading back there.

[Where the girls might still be. To get rid of the evidence. Alaric is not trying to be the reason that something happens to them. In his condition he would probably be more of a liability to Helen anyway.]

Don't wait for me.

You mean to tell me those two are related? [For the love of fucking Christ. Helen doesn't like the idea of leaving Ric alone, but she knows what prompts him to tell her to do so (wis 18).] We'll leave you the address so you can come after us once they've patched you up. [She's just going to keep making his injury sound like it's not as bad as it likely is. She's worried for Ric, but knows that he won't let her dally to see him treated.]

Sure. Brother and sister. Casey's is the family business.

[ He says it like wow obviously. ]

Earl Casey's been running that store for fifty years now.

Sounds good. [Gurl I don't think they'll get him patched up that quick but sure.

Can you step on it, grandpa. We got places to be already.]

[An entire family in on it. Helen leans forward.]

I'd appreciate it if you could drive a bit faster, officer. Our people could be hurt, you see.

There's some misunderstanding goin' on.

[ but with his drive check of 17, he's speeding up all the same. ]

Gotta be. The Caseys are good people. No reason they'd grab your friends.

For your sake, I hope you're right. [It's not as threatening as it could be. She mostly sounds worried. Speaking of worried, she casts another look to Ric, checking to see if he's still holding up.]

Like your trigger-happy colleague back there? [Or the shop employee who couldn't be involved, and just liked randomly speeding away from the scene of an abduction.

Ric is basically throwing out ~~shade~~ sarcasm for days, whoops. But he's also the only one who is bleeding heavily here--he's allowed to be sour grapes.]

I told Amy to get rid of that thing months ago. I thought she had.

[ He sounds fairly defensive, but there's ... no real defense here. And he seems to realize it as he glances up into the rearview mirror at Ric.

In a few short minutes, they arrive at the police station, where the town doctor meets them. Because they do not have a trauma center here. The doctor helps the cop pull Ric from the car and stretch him out on one of the bunks of a cell. ]

[Helen barely allows the town doctor to get a greeting out before she starts to rattle off exactly what needs to be done to treat Ric (treat injury 29). She wishes she could just take care of him on her own, but they both know that every second spent not looking for the rest of the team could be detrimental. Reaching out, she touches his hand lightly, a pained smile on her lips.] I'll call you once I know more. [Basically, she plans to let him know where to meet them. For now though, she gives him one last glance before she turns and heads out, grabbing the officer as she goes.]

You need to take me to see that family. Immediately.

[Ric actually appreciates the fact that Helen bothered to tell the town doctor what he needed to do. It wasn't just officer incompetent anymore, he was going to go ahead and assume everyone in this backwoods was just as clueless anymore.

But ultimately finding the girls was the best use of Helen's time, and what he made clear should be done from the beginning. He does his best to return the smile while his torso looks like ground beef but he half expects these Deliverance rejects to start hacking him up like some redneck horror movie after she's gone.

Prepare to have the bitchiest patient of your career, doc.]

[ The doctor, with Helen's orders, does manage to start properly working on Ric.

Meanwhile, officer incompetent gets back in the car with Helen. ]

They got a farm house a couple miles up the road.

[ As he settles into the car, he looks around, realizing ... Amy and Eddie never made it here. :) Despite Eddie's injuries. ]

[She's very careful to note the directions they're taking to get to this farm house (navigate 25) so that she can relay the information to Ric later. Just saying that much now.

The officer's hesitation gives her pause. But she's not on his wavelength (wis 9) and just thinks he's stalling.]

I'd rather not lose any more time, if we can help it.

[ Gurl that's a doctor and Ric is fucked up I don't think he's coming to hang out. There ain't no clerics in this bitch.

Helen's comment jerks the officer out of his confusion and he just shakes it off—they must have been faster. He starts up the car and heads over to the farmhouse. ]

[SHE IS VERY HOPEFUL OKAY

Once they're moving, she seems to stop bristling quite as much.]

I hope for your sake that my people are unharmed.
